General Information

Greases and Their Classification

Greases, as a rule, are produced from liquid base oil by means of adding special
thickener to it.
To create lubricants with various characteristics, different additives are introduced into
them.

The composition of the grease = Base oil (80 – 90 %) + Additives + Thickeners

Thickeners
 Metallic soap (based on lithium, calcium, or aluminum) with sodium.
 Complex soap based on the above-mentioned metals.
 Non-organic thickener (e.g. benite clay).
 Synthetic thickener (e.g. polyurethane).

Base Oil
Both mineral and synthetic oils can be used as base oils. Base oil together with
thickeners determines plastic properties of a lubricant (fluidity).

Additives
Additives are added to lubricating as well as liquid greases to provide them with the
required properties.
Besides additives, which are characteristic for liquid oils, solid additives, like
molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) and graphite can be added to the grease.

Lubricant Properties
Thickness
Thickness (penetration) of a lubricant is determined based on the method of the NLGI
(National Grease Institute).
To measure the thickness of a lubricant, a special cone is used, which penetrates into the
lubricant under own weight for 5 seconds at the temperature +25oС. The depth of
immersion is measured, and based on the results of measurements, the index of
moldability is determined. This index characterizes the ability of the lubricant to
support the mechanical pressure. Based on the index of mold ability, the lubricants can
be divided into the NLGI categories, which are assigned numbers from 000 to 6. The
higher the number is, the thicker the lubricant is.

Breakdown Temperature
That is the temperature, when liquid oil starts escaping from the lubricant.

Lubricating Properties
Lubricating properties of grease and its ability to support the load depend both on the
viscosity of the base oil, and also on the behavior of thickeners in limit conditions of
lubricating and their joint ability to form oil foam. Anti-wear and anti-burring properties
of the lubricant are determined based on tests on special bench-testing equipment.

Pressing Possibility Limit


The possibility of lubricant pressing under pressure into interacting pairs is one of the
most important indicators of the lubricant quality of the lubricant as regards to the use
in structures with central lubrication, especially under conditions of cold climate.

Corrosion Resistibility
It is determined as time, during which the surface covered with the lubricant resists to
corrosion in presence of water.

Waterproof
It characterizes the ability (stability) of the lubricant to resist water flow. It is
determined by the quantity of lubricant (in percents from the initial one), which was left
on the lubricated surface under the impact of a water flow.

XADO GREASES

XADO greases are produced in compliance with the technical standards ТУ У 24.
6 – 25612000-002-2002 and are designed to provide reliable lubrication of units and
mechanisms, restoration of the mechanical wear and lubricated metal parts, as well as to
protect them from wear and corrosion impact.
The presence of the XADO revitalizant in them causes the formation of a metal
ceramic protective layer on work surfaces of friction pairs of units and mechanisms,
which is formed on the matrix of the surface of a mechanism. Formation of the metal-
ceramic protective layer in the process of the mechanism work enables to restore the
mechanical wear of work surfaces, to protect them from wear at further use, reduce the
friction rate of work surfaces, as well as to protect friction pairs from burrs, and impact
of hostile environments.
Due to the increased content of high-molecular-weight polymers, special anti-
oxidants and thickeners, XADO greases possess such properties as increased adhesion,
water-repellence and anti-corrosive features. It enables to use them as a universal
substitute of any greases, including special ones, like for specific units and mechanisms,
for example, ШРУС-4 (SHRUS-4), ЦИАТИМ-221 (TSIATIM-221), ЛИТОЛ-24
(LITOL-24), ШРБ-4 (SHRB-4), and similar ones, as well as imported lubricants.
Presence of EP (Extreme Pressure) additives in the XADO greases enables them
to work stably under conditions of prolonged extreme loads and provides the protection
from burrs, curing, and jamming.

1. Methods of application of XADO general-purpose lubricants

The following XADO general-purpose greases are produced:


- «Protective»;
- «Restoring»; and,
- «Repairing»; and,
- «Super lubricant».
1.1. XADO lubricants are made on the lithium basis and are designed for universal
use instead of regular lubricants in units and mechanisms of various technological
equipment and transportation means, usage of which does not require application of
greases with specific properties.
General-purpose XADO lubricants possess increased adhesion and anti-corrosive
properties. It enables to use them as a replacement for any general-purpose greases,
including those, which are designed for specific units (e.g. ШРУС-4; and ШРБ). The
presence of a set of EP additives in XADO general-purpose lubricants allows saving the
stability, providing reliable lubrication under conditions of extreme loads.
XADO general-purpose lubricants maintain protective and anti-wear properties
even after prolonged mechanical and heat overloads, due to mechanical and chemical
stability. They prevent the corrosion of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, possess
excellent water-resistant properties and can be used in contact with water.

1.2. Application greases of the XADO general-purpose lubricants "Protective",
"Restoring", and "Super lube" enables to provide:
 Restoration of the shape of parts and their protection from wear;
 Decrease of the friction rate due to formation of the metal-ceramic layer;
 Reliable protection from burrs and jamming of friction pairs;
 Decrease of consumed power of driving gears;
 Decrease of the level of noise and vibration;
 Prolonged protection of units and mechanisms from the impact of hostile
environment.
1.3. Characteristics of XADO general-purpose lubricants.
Characteristics of the XADO general-purpose lubricants "Protective" and "Superlube"
are given in Appendix 1.
1.4. Application procedures for XADO LUBRICANTS:
1.4.1. Completely or partially dismantle a unit or mechanism.
1.4.2. Clean off the old lubricant from all parts and wash them.
1.4.3. At visual examination of all available friction surfaces, determine their
technical condition (presence of cavities, chips, cracks, burrs, etc), the degree of wear
and possibility of treatment based on the XADO-technology®.
1.4.4. If any damaged or extremely worn-out parts are present, they should be
replaced before lubricating with XADO lubricants.
1.4.5. Measure dimensions of parts or gaps.
1.4.6. Select a XADO lubricant category.
The category of the XADO general-purpose lubricant to be applied depends on the
degree of wear:
- for new units and mechanisms or with the wear of up to 10 %, the "Protective"
lubricant is used;
- for units and mechanism s with the wear from 10 % to 50 %, the "Restoring"
lubricant is used;
- for units and mechanisms with the wear from 50 % to 80 %, the "Repairing"
lubricant is used.
- for new units and mechanisms or with the wear of up to 30 %, for which
lubricants with thickness NLGI 2 are recommended, the "Superlube" lubricant is used.
1.4.7. Assemble the unit or mechanism and fill it with the corresponding type of a
lubricant with the consideration of the following recommendations:
In bearing units with frictionless bearings, filling with a XADO general-
purpose lubricant is completed as follows:
- bearings with the rotation frequency of up to 3000 rpm are filled with the
XADO lubricant in the amount of not more than 2/3 unit vacant volume;

- bearings with the rotation frequency of over 3000 rpm are filled with the
XADO lubricant in the amount of not more than 1/2 unit vacant volume.
1.4.8. Measure main parameters of a unit or a mechanism.
1.4.9. Let it run with the minimum load for one hour (or idle for 30 minutes), and
then continue using as designed without overloading.
1.5. Periodicity of adding and replacement of the XADO lubricant is determined
by the rules of technical maintenance of a specific unit or mechanism (or based on
recommendations of a XADO technical professional).
1.6. A complete cycle of revitalization (wear restoration) of a unit or a mechanism
with the XADO general-purpose lubricant comprises not less than 400 hours of total
non-failure operating time of a unit or a mechanism.
1.7. Upon finishing the treatment cycle, second measuring of main performance
parameters of a unit or a mechanism is done to further conduct a comparative analysis
and determination of the efficiency of the lubricant application.

Note:
1. To increase performance resources of a unit or mechanism by two to four times and
to maintain the balance of the "wear-restoration" process at further use upon completing
treatment with the XADO general-purpose lubricant, it is recommended to use the
XADO "Protective" lubricant.
2. It is allowed to blend XADO general-purpose lubricants, like "Protective",
"Restoring", "Repairing", and "Super lube" in any proportion.

2. Method of Application of XADO Greases


for High-Speed Units and Mechanisms

The following types of XADO greases for high-speed units and mechanisms are
produced:
- «Protective 20К»;
- «Restoring 20К»;
- «Protective 60К».
2.1. XADO lubricants for high-speed units and mechanisms are used instead of
regular lubricants in units and mechanisms, which work with the rotation frequency
from 10,000 to 60,000 rpm. XADO lubricants for high-speed units and mechanisms are
recommended for lubrication of units with medium and high loads in the range from
high to very high speeds, especially, if these units are simultaneously subjected to high
temperature impacts.
2.1.1. XADO lubricant «Protective 20К» and «Restoring 20К» are made based on
the complex calcium soap and synthetic hydrocarbons. It is recommended to be used in

bearing units with the rotation frequency of up to 20,000 rpm. It possesses high
adhesive, water-repellent and anti-corrosive properties. It can easily restore the shape of
frictionless bearings, as well as decrease noise and vibration to minimum indices. It
increases the resource of bearings by 2 to 4 times.

2.1.2. XADO lubricant «Protective 60К» is produced based on polycarbamide and


synthetic hydrocarbons. It is recommended for bearing units, which work with the
frequency of up to 60,000 rpm. It possesses good resistance to corrosion and other
hostile environments. It enables to provide prolonged work at regular use without
wearing of work surfaces. It eliminates micro-damages of friction surfaces, improves
their roughness, and decreases the noise level and vibration in bearing units.
2.2. Application of XADO lubricants for high-speed units enables to:
 Restore wear and protect high-speed units from wear;
 Reduce power consumption;
 Significantly decrease the friction rate;
 Protect maintenance surfaces from the formation of burrs and jamming;
 Reduce the level of noise and vibration;
 Maintain prolonged use of mechanisms in the hostile environment.
2.3. Characteristics of XADO lubricants for high-speed units and mechanisms are
given in Appendix 2.
2.4Application procedures for XADO lubricants for high-speed units and
mechanisms:
2.4.1. Completely or partially dismantle units or mechanisms.
2.4.2. Clean all parts from old lubricants and wash.
2.4.3. At visual examination of available friction surfaces, determine their
condition (presence of cavities, chips, cracks, burrs, etc.), the degree of wear of parts
and the possibility of treatment with XADO revitalizing lubricants.
2.4.4. Upon presence of damaged, destroyed or extremely worn-out parts, they
shall be replaced before treating the mechanism.
2.4.5. In case of necessity, measure shapes of parts.
2.4.6. High-speed XADO lubricants are applied depending on the degree of the
wear of units and mechanisms:
- high-speed lubricant «Protective 20К» is used in new units and mechanisms
or with the rate of wear up to 10 %;
- high-speed lubricant «Restoring 20К» is used in units and mechanisms with
the wear rate from 10 % to 50 %;
- high-speed lubricant «Protective 60К» is used in new units or mechanisms
with the wear degree of up to 30 %.

2.4.7. Apply a thin layer (thickness 0.1-0.2 mm) of a corresponding XADO
lubricant for high-speed units onto all work surfaces of parts and assemble a unit
or a mechanism. No additional stuffing of frictionless bearing shall be done with
XADO lubricant for high-speed units.
2.4.8. As required, main maintenance parameters of a unit or a mechanism are
measured.
2.4.9. Start up a unit and let it idle (or run with minimum load) for one hour.
2.4.10. Gradually (or step by step) increase the load (or revolutions) until
operating mode is achieved during the following six hours of running, and then
use the unit or a mechanism as designed without overloading it.
2.5. The periodicity of adding or replacing the XADO lubricant for high-speed
mechanisms is determined in compliance with the rules of technical maintenance of the
unit or mechanism (or based on the recommendation of a XADO technical
professional).
2.6. A complete cycle of treatment (revitalization process) shall be not less than
250 hours of total non-failure operating time of the unit or mechanism.
2.7. Upon the completion of a treatment cycle, and in case of necessity, repeated
measuring of main performance parameters of the treated unit or mechanism are
conducted.

Note:
1. To increase the resource of performance of a unit or mechanism by two to five
times and to keep the process of "wear-restoration" balanced for prolonged period of
time at further use of the XADO lubricant "Restoring 20К" and finishing the complete
cycle of treatment, it is recommended to use the XADO lubricant "Protective 20К».
2. The lubricant "Protective 20К" and "Restoring 20К» can be blended with each
other in any proportion.
3. It is not allowed to mix lubricants «20К» and «60К» with each other.

3. Application procedures for XADO High-Speed Lubricants


The following types of XADO high-temperature lubricants and lubricant pastes are
produced:
- grease "THERMOLUBE – 300";
- lubricant paste with solid components «THERMOLUBE - 1000»;
- lubricant paste on the mineral basis «XADO-250»; and,
- lubricant paste on the synthetic basis «XADO-300»;

3.1. High-temperature grease «THERMOLUBE-300», as well as high-temperature


lubricant pastes: «XADO-250», «XADO-300», and «THERMOLUBE-1000» are
developed for industrial use in those units and mechanisms, where heat-resistant

lubricants of other producers do not provide the required protection from wear under
conditions of prolonged impact of high temperature and hostile environments.
XADO high-temperature lubricants and lubricant pastes are recommended for
wide use in industrial equipment, which works at high temperatures and large loads. It
is ideal for bearing units of industrial ovens, conveyers of various types, drying
cylinders, fans, and work surfaces of press forms.
3.2. High-temperature lubricant «THERMOLUBE-300» contains particularly
heat-resistant additives, due to which its high resistance to prolonged impact to high
temperatures is provided. The lubricant «THERMOLUBE-300» is also recommended
for application as a labyrinthine lubricant of bearing units, working under conditions of
high temperatures, sub acid media and high moisture content.
The lubricant «THERMOLUBE-300» possesses good adhesive characteristics to
the lubricated surface, provides high anti-burring properties to the friction surfaces, and
does not require additional sealing of a unit when applying it.
3.3. Lubricant paste «THERMOLUBE-1000» is a set of solid lubricating
materials on purely synthetic basis and non-organic thickener. «THERMOLUBE-1000»
does not contain metals; it effectively protects contact points from corrosion, prevents
baking and formation of calx at prolonged impact of high temperatures. The lubricating
paste «THERMOLUBE-1000» is not recommended to use in frictionless bearings with
rotation speed of over 250 rpm.
3.4. Lubricating paste «XADO-250» sticks well to the surface and creates a
reliable film of the sufficient thickness to prevent wear and intensive heat abstraction
away from loaded units. The lubricating paste «XADO-250» provides great protection
of parts from corrosion, which appears under the impact of humidity, as well as organic
and mineral acids.
Low coking ability of the lubricating paste «XADO-250» prevents the possibility
of carbon formation and assists prolonged keeping of lubricating properties. It works
well at constant temperature of up to 250 ºС and continues working the temperature of
up to 300 ºС doe a short period of time.
It can be applied to lubricate frictionless bearings, which work with the rotation
speed of up to 36,000 rpm.
Before applying the «XADO-250» in non-sealed bearing units, it is recommended
to protect the unit from lubricant paste leaking, in particular, at the initial step.
3.5. Lubricant paste «XADO-300», due to its synthetic base, it possesses great
heat resistance, dielectric behavior, and high resistance to oxidation, low freezing point,
good resistance to long and prolonged shearing forces, low combustion heat and good
thermal conductivity.
Before applying «XADO-300» in non-sealed bearing units, it is necessary to
protect the unit from lubricant paste leaking, in particular, at the initial stage.
The «XADO-300» lubricant paste is recommended to be used in friction and low-
speed friction bearings (up to 500 rpm) in the mechanisms of thermal stoves, electric
engines, fans of hot blast, smoke suckers, bearing units of drive-gear mechanisms and
units, which work in the temperature range from +80 °С to +300 °С.

3.6. Characteristics of XADO high-temperature lubricants are given in Appendix 3.
3.7. Application of XADO high-temperature lubricants enables to do the
following:
 To restore the wear of lubricated parts;
 To reduce power consumption by drive gears of mechanisms;
 To provide reliable and prolonged protection of work surfaces from high
temperature and other hostile environments;
 To reduce the friction rate of work surfaces;
 To protect mechanisms from the formation of burrs and jamming;
 To reduce noise level and vibration level;
 To use mechanisms and units in hostile environments over a long period of time.

3.8. Application sequence for high-temperature lubricants «THERMOLUBE-


300», «THERMOLUBE-1000», «XADO-250», and «XADO-300»:
3.8.1. XADO high-temperature lubricants are used instead of regular lubricants.
Prior to applying the lubricant, all the regular lubrication shall be removed (washing of
the unit is recommended).
3.8.2. Lubricant is applied in the amount, recommended for a specific unit or
mechanism by the rules of technical maintenance.
3.8.3. Upon completing lubricating, the unit shall be started working and used as
designed.
Note:
1. Due to the fact that high-temperature lubricating pastes «XADO-250» and «XADO-
300» have semi-fluid consistency, their application in open and half-closed bearing
units during the first three months of use (to prevent complete leaking from the work
area) is recommended to be done in small doses three to four times more often than it is
envisaged by the rules of technical maintenance of the given unit or mechanism.

4. Methods of XADO special-purpose lubricant application

The XADO SHRUS is considered to be a XADO special-purpose grease.


4.1. The XADO SHRUS lubricant is one of the best modern lubricants for joints of
equal angular velocity. Based on all its properties, it significantly exceeds any other
lubricant for such joints, which contain molybdenum disulfide (MoS2).
The XADO SHRUS lubricant does not contain MoS 2, that is why it does not form
solid particles on the friction surfaces, and in case of the breakup of a joint duster, it
does not form abrasive substance and aggressive acids.
The lubricant is made based on the unique co-crystallization technology based on
complex lithium and calcium thickener (Alassca complex), when special active

additives synthesize into the structure of a complex thickener. It allows better realizing
a fundamentally new and efficient approach to provide the best protective properties of
the lubricant:
0 - complex lithium component is "transplanted" into the matrix of the calcium
thickener and improves lubricating properties;
1 - high-molecular polymers prove an increased adhesiveness to wear faces and
high anti-corrosive properties of the lubricant even if impacted by salt water;
- XADO atomic revitalizant provides unique anti-wear and anti-burr properties.
The XADO SHRUS lubricant can be used as a universal lubricant for all the units
of a car (wheel center bearings, ball bearings and joints, transmission cardan joints, as
well as pump and generator bearings), also including those in centralized lubricating
systems. It is suitable for various units of industrial machinery and household electrical
devices (gearing, friction and frictionless bearings, pinions of hand rubbing machines,
drive chains, etc.).
2 The XADO SHRUS lubricant is compatible with all the types of vehicle and
industrial lubricants on the lithium basis, and can be mixed with them in any proportion.
2 4.2. Characteristics of the XADO SRHUS are given in Appendix 4.

4 4.3. Application of the XADO SHRUS provides the following:
5 - ideal lubricating of joints at any conditions of use (extremely high loads, high and
low shear rates, dustiness and increased humidity);
6 - ability to provide long-term protection to joints against the impact of humidity
and dirt in case of the damage of the gaiter (duster);
7 - keeping part surface in ideal condition; prevention of formation of burrs and
corrosion owing to the content of XADO atomic revitalizant;
8 - elimination of the appearing "crunch" of joints; decrease of the levels of noise
and vibration.
9 - increase of the resource of joints and other mechanisms by 2 to 2.5 times.
10 4.4. Application procedures for the XADO SHRUS lubricants in joints of equal
angular velocity.
The XADO SHRUS is used in joints of equal angular velocity in place of any regular
lubricant.
4.4.1. Dismantle a joint, paying attention to location of separate parts for further correct
assembling.
4.4.2. Remove old lubricant and wash all the parts.
4.4.3. Assemble the joints, keeping in mind the initial mutual location of the parts.
4.4.4. Feel the vacant volume with the XADO SHRUS.
4.4.5. Cover the unit with the gaiter and reliably fix it.
4.4.6. Mount the joint back and use as designed.
4.5. Application procedures for the XADO SHRUS lubricant in other bearing units
of vehicles, household electric devices, and industrial equipment:

4.5.1. Completely or partially dismantle a unit or a mechanism.
4.5.2. Clean off the old lubricant from all the parts and wash them.
4.5.3. At visual examination of all the accessible friction surfaces, determine their
technical condition (presence of cavities, chips, burrs, etc.), the degree of wear and the
possibility to treat them with the XADO-Technologies®.
4.5.4. If there are damaged or extremely worn-out parts, they shall be replaced
before treating them with the XADO lubricant.
4.5.5. Measure the shape of parts or gaps.
4.5.6. Assemble the unit or a mechanism and fill the vacant space with the XADO
SHRUS, taking into account the following recommendations:
In bearing units with frictionless bearings, filling with the XADO general-
purpose lubricant shall be done as follows:
- not more than 2/3 of the vacant volume of bearing units of bearings with the
rotation frequency of up to 3,000 rpm, are filled with the XADO SHRUS lubricant;
- not more than ½ of the vacant volume of bearing units of bearings with the
rotation frequency of over 3,000 rpm, are filled with the XADO SHRUS lubricant.
4.5.8. Run the unit or mechanism as designed.

Note:
1. Owing to the content of the XADO revitalizant, the XADO SHRUS
lubricant can be used for efficient protection from current wear. To restore
the accumulated wear of joints of equal angular velocity, it is recommended
to use the XADO "Restoring" or "Repairing" lubricant, depending on the
degree of wear.
