CHAPTER V

SUMMARY, FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chpater presents the summary of the study. It also presents the conclusion based on
the findings of the study as well as the recommendations made.

Summary of Findings

This study observed the relationship between Nurses and Patient of Pangasinan
Provincial Hospital in terms of nursing care specifically in its effect to recovery among patients of
the said hospital. Shown below are the summary of findings for the said study.

I. Profile of Respondents Based on Personal Information

1. Gender - Findings on the profile of respondents based on gender revealed that majority
of the patients during the conduct of the study were male with a total frequency of 29
or 58% out of 21 or 42% female. This signifies that male were most likely to be
hospitalized compared to female patients.

2. Age - Findings on the profile of respodents based on age revealed that majority of the
patients age range during the conduct of study was between 55 - 64 years old with a
frequency of 11 or 22%. This was followed by the age bracket between 25 - 34 years old
with a frequency of 10 or 20%. Other patients landed on the age bracket of 18 -24 years
old with a frequency of 9 or 18%, 35 - 44 years old with a frequency of 8 or 16%, 45-54
years old with a frequency of 8 or 16% and 65 years above with a frequency of 4 or 8%.
This signifies that the age range between 55 - 64 years old and 25 - 34 were most likely
to be hospitalized compared to the other age bracket or range.

3. Marital Status - Findings on the profile of the respondents based on marital status
revealed that majority of the patients marital status during the conduct of the study
were married with a frequency of 22 or 44%. This was followed by single patients with a
frequency of 20 or 40%. Lastly, widowed patients end up with a frequency of 6 or 12%
ang separated with a frequency of 2 or 4%. This signifies that the highest percentage of
patients during the study in terms of marital status was married.
4. Employment - Findings on the profile of the respondents based on employment
revealed that majority of the patients were unemployed with a frequency of 28 or 56%.
On the other hand, the remaining 22 or 44% of patients were employed. This signifies
that patients who are unemployed are most likely sick compared to those employed.

5. Religion - Findings on the profile of the respondents based on religion revealed that
majority of the patients were Roman Catholic with a frequency of 39 or 78%. The
remaining percentage of patients based on their religion were as follows Iglesia ni Cristo
having the frequency of 6 or 12%, Born Again Christian with a frequency of 3 or 6%,
Baptist with a frequency of 2 or 4%, Mulim or other religion with 0 frequency or 0%. This
signifies that sickness doesn't come with religion.

II. Profile of Pangasinan Provincial Hospital Nurses in Terms of Orientation Phase

6. Instructions - Findings on the profile of the Pangasinan Provincial Nurses nursing care in
terms of instructions under orientation phase revealed that majority of the patients
during the study were satisfied in the nursing care they have received during their stay at
the hospital with a frequency of 25 or 50%. Other ratings for nursing care in terms of
instruction were as follows; good with a frequency of 18 or 36%, fair with a frequency of
6 or 12% and poor having a frequency of 1 or 2%. This signifies that the nursing care of
Pangasinan Provincial Hospital in terms of information was very good yet improvements
are still needed in order for the nurses to achieved a 100% satisfaction from patients in
terms of discussing informations to them.

7. Communication - Findings on the profile of the Pangasinan Provincial Nurses nursing


care in terms of communication under orientation phase revealed that majority of the
patients were very satisfied with the nursing care they have received during their stay at
the hospital in terms of communication with a frequency of 24 or 48%. This was
followed by the rating good with a frequency of 19 or 38%. Other ratings were as
follows; fair with a frequency of 5 or 10% and poor with a frequency of 2 or 4%. This
signifies that majority of the patients were very happy with the nursing care they have
received in terms of communication during their stay at the hospital. Improvements
however are still necessary in order to achieved a 100% effectiveness of nursing care in
terms of communication.
8. Attitude - Findings on the profile of Pangasinan Provincial Nurses nursing care in terms
of attitude under orientation phase revealed that majority of the patients were very
satisfied with the nursing care in terms of the nurses attitude towards them with a
frequency of 26 or 52%. This was followed by the rating good with a frequency of 16 or
32%, fair having 4 or 8% and poor having the same rating as fair with 4 reponse or 8%.
This signifies that patients during the study was very satisfied of the attitude that the
nurses of Pangasinan Provinicla Hospital towards them. However, low ratings were still
seen during the survey which requires necessary action or improvement in order for the
patientsto have the 100% satisfaction in the nursing care attitude.

III. Profile of Pangasinan Provincial Hospital Nurses in Terms of Working Phase

9. Openness - Findings on the the Profile of Pangasinan Provincial Nurses nursing care in
terms of openness under working phase revealed that majority of the patients were very
satisfied in the openness of the nurses of the said hospital with a frequency of 22 or
44%. Other ratings were as follows good with a frequency of 17 or 34%, fair with a
frequency of 7 or 14%, and poor with a frequency of 4 or 8%. Some patients were still
unsatisfied with of the nursing care they have have received in terms of openness
despite of the high percentage of very satisfied patients. Therefore, improvements in
this area is still needed.

10. Helpfulness - Findings on the the Profile of Pangasinan Provincial Nurses nursing care in
terms of helpfulness under working phase revealed that majority of the patients were
very satisfied in the help that nurses offered during their stay at the hospital with a
frequency of 23 or 46%. This rating was followed by good with a frequency of 20 or 40%,
fair with a frequency of 4 or 8% and poor with a frequency of 3 or 6%. Based on the
ratings given by the patients, it indicated that nurses of of Pangasinan Provincial Hospital
were very helpful and only a few of them aren't that needs improvement.

11. Skills and Competence - Findings on the the Profile of Pangasinan Provincial Nurses
nursing care in terms of skills and competence under working phase revealed that
majority of the patients were very satisfied on the skills and competence that the nurses
have shown the during their stay at Pangasinan Provincial Hospital with a frequency of
23 or 46%. The other ratings given were as follows; good with a frequency of 19 or 38%,
fair with a frequency of 4 or 8% and poor having also the same rate as fair with 4
response or 8%. This signifies that in terms of skills and competence of the nurses a
portion for improvement is still necessary in order for them to provide quality nursing
care.

12. Response - Findings on the profile of Pangasinan Provincial Nurses nursing care in terms
of response under working phase revealed that majority of the nurses were very
responsive according to the ratings of the patients during their stay at the hospital with a
frequency of 23 or 46% . Other ratings given were good with a frequency of 19 or 38%,
fair with a frequency of 4 or 8% and poor with the same frequency of fair with 4
response or 8%. This signifies that most of the nurses at Pangasinan Provincial Hospital
were responsive. However, a percentage of low and poor ratings were still present and
requires necessary actions and improvements.

13. Environment and Privacy - Findings on the profile of Pangasinan Provincial Nurses
nursing care in terms of environment and privacy under working phase most of the
patients were satisfied with a frequency of 23 or 46%. This rating was followed by good
with a frequency of 18 or 36%, fair with 4 response or 8% and poor having the same rate
as fair with a frequency of 4 or 8%. This signifies that nurses in Pangasinan Provincial
Hospital did a good job in terms of providing a good private environment for the
patients. Areas of improvement however is needed due to low and poor ratings seen
during the conduct of the said study.

IV. Profile of Pangasinan Provincial Hospital Nurses in Terms of Termination Phase

14. Instructions - Findings on the profile of Pangasinan Provincial Hospital Nurses nursing
care in terms of instructions under termination phase revealed that majority of the
patients admitted during the conduct of the study were very satisfied in the intructions
they have received on their discharge with a frequency of 27 or 54%. Other ratings were
as follows; good with a frequency of 12 or 24%, fair with a frequency of 9 or 18% and
poor with a frequency of 2 or 4%. This indicated that the nursing care of Pangasinan
Provincial Hospital Nurses in terms of giving instructions were very clear and good as per
rating of the patients admitted during the study.
15. Communication and Relationship - Findings on the profile of Pangasinan Provincial
Nurses nursing care in terms of their co6mmunication and relationship between the
patients under termination phase were rated very good in majority with a frequency of
27 or 54% and were followed by the ratings good with a frequency of 12 or 24%, fair
with a frequency of 10 or 20% and poor with 1 response or 2%. This showed that the
communication and relationship between patients in Pangasinan Provincial Hospital
were good and requires minimal improvement.

16. Perception - Findings on the profile of Pangasinan Provincial Nurses nursing care in
terms of their perception under termination phase was good with the highest rate of
very good resulting to a frequency of 23 or 46% follow theired by good with a frequency
of 17 or 34%, fair with a frequency of 8 or 16% and poor having a frequnecy of 2 or 4%.
This revealed that the perception of nurses on the said hospital was good and requires
minimal improvement.

V. Profile of Pangasinan Provincial Hospital Nurses in Terms of Recommendation

17. Recommendation - Findings on the profile of Pangasinan Provincial Nurses nursing care
reccomendation revealed that majority of the patients that were admitted during the
connduct of the study said that they will recommend Pangasinan Provincial Hospital to
their family, relatives, friends and colleagues with a frequency of 44 or 88% out of 50 or
100%. This signifies that the nursing care provided in Pangasinan Provincial Hospital was
good yet requires a minimal improvement in order to achieve the excellent status.

Conclusions

This part of the study showed the conclusions that the researchers have come up with
after conducting the study intended to help the reader understand why this research matters for
the readers and why it was done.

I. Pesonal Information

18. Gender - Majority of the patients during the conduct of the study were male.

19. Age - In terms of age majority of the patients admitted were in the age bracket of 55 - 64
years old during the conduct of the study.
20. Marital Status - Most of the patients admitted during the study were married.

21. Educational Attainment - Majority of the patients were high school graduate during the
conduct of the study.

22. Employment - Majority of the patients admitted during the conduct of the study were
unemployed.

23. Religion - Most patients during the study were Roman Catholic.

Personal Information is a highly private and sensitive data that anyone can gather. In this
study confidentiality of personal information was applied in order to protect the respondents. It
is important to know the personal information of patients before treating them for the following
reasons; a. gender - in terms of gender some patients are uncomfortable with a nurse opposite
their sex serving or treating them especially in treating/examining private parts. Therefore
information regarding gender is necessary in order to place the right person to treat, examine or
serve a sensitive or uncomfortable patient.; b. age - in terms of age nurses must be aware of the
patients age in order for them to give the right approach/attitude to patients according to their
age. In terms of treatment to age necessary dosage of medicines, treatments, or care has its
limits or amounts for certain ages. Therefore, age plays also an important role in terms of
treatment or medication.; c. marital status - this is important so that nurses will know or have
the idea on whom to contact (family, friends or colleagues) if needed during the treatment.; d
educational attainment - this personal information is very important in order for the nurses to
determine how will they approach the said patients. Education plays an important role in terms
of understanding and communication. Some patients are highly educated while some are not. In
determining this, nurses will know or have the idea on how to deliver messages or communicate
to patients effectively with different IQ level during the treatment/s.; e. employment -
employment is very important to know in order for nurses to determine the source of income
the patient has. Knowing this also gives the nurses idea on what suggestions/options if
applicable to give during the treatment of patient whether it is expensive or budget friendly.; f.
religion - this is the most sensitive topic around the world. Some patients are also sensitive in
regards to the discussion of religion. Therefore, it is important for nurses to know this
information so they will know what to do in case they have encountered a sensitive patient in
terms of their religion.
II. Orientation Phase

24. Information - Majority of the patients said that they were satisfied with the information
provided by their nurses in the test, treatments & expectation regarding their health
condition.

Orientation Phase in terms of information to nurses is very important in order for them
to casscade information properly in terms of the test, treatments to be given to their patient and
their expectation regarding their health condition. Questions from patients are also raised and
can be answered properly during phase if nurses are well informed.

III. Working Phase

25. Oppenness - Majority of the patients admitted during the study said that the nurses of
Pangasinan Provincial Hospital was very open in terms of the patients opinion/s,
suggestion/s, need/s during the treatment of their medication.

26. Helpfulness - Majority of the patients said that the nurses were very helpful in assisting
them to what they need.

27. Skills and Competence - Majority of the patients admitted during the conduct of the
study said that nurses at Pangasinan Provincial Hospital were fully equipped with skills
and competence in terms of taking or giving vital signs, injections, medicines, etc.

28. Response - Majority of the patients said that nurses in Pangasinan Provincial Hospital
were very responsive in terms of giving assistance to the need/s of the patient.

29. Environment and Privacy - Majority of the patients said that the nurses of Pangasinan
Provincial Hospital provided them a peaceful and private environmnent.

Working Phase in terms of oppenness, this is very important in order for the nurses to
have a good communication between their patients in terms of providing or taking comment/s,
suggestion/s, opinion/s and assistance of their patients without being offended. Another part of
the working phase is helpfulness, not all nurses are very helpful offering an extra help to
patients in terms of assistance and services contributes to the wellness of their patient. Skills and
competence is also part of the working phase of nurses. Having good skills and competence
assures patients that they are in the right hands while on medication/treatment. Patients will
feel safe, secured and worry free if nurses shows very good skills and competence among
patience. Fast response during working phase is also critical for nurses to perform especially in
public hopsitals like Pangasinan Provincial Hospital were volume of patients come and go. Being
responsive to patients need/s is very important especially in emergencies or other critical
situations. Responsiveness may not just result to positive feedbacks from patients but also a life
saver. Last part of working phase is the patient's environment and privacy. Like response
environment and privacy is also a critical stage for patients and nurses especially in public
hospitals. Nurses who manage and make a way to provide patients a private enrivironment
cannot only contribute to their peace of mind but also for their fast recovery.

IV. Terminatiion Phase

30. Instructions - Most of the patients of Pangasinan Provincial Hospital during the cinduct
of the study said that the nurses have provided the clear and complete instructions after
discharge.

31. Communication and Relationship - Majority of the patients said that the nurses
comRmunicated to them very well as to their family members during their treatment at
Pangasinan Provincial Hospital and exerted effort to ataed their needs after discharge.

32. Perception - Most of the patient said that they were happy with the overall quality of
nursing care they have received during their stay at Pangasinan Provincial Hospital.

Termination Phase is the last stage of nursing care. In this phase instructions are very
much important in order for patients to know what to do after discharge. Clear instructions
results to continuous health improvement and recovery of patients. Communication and
relationship among nurse-patient is also very important for the recovery of the patient it helps in
terms of patients having peace of mind, safety and assurance if they need to ask something
regarding their health and fast recovery due to well established communication and relationship
of nurse-patient. Perception of the patients of the nursing care they have received is also very
important as this determines whether they will recommend the nursing care that Pangasinan
Provincial Hospital has provided or the hospital itself.

V. Recommendation
33. Recommendation - Overall, majority of the patients who stayed at Pangasinan Provincial
Hospial during the conduct of the study said that they will recommend the said hospital
to their family, relatives, friends or colleagues.

Recommendation of hospitals is very important for the following reasons; gained trust
from previous patients, recommendations and promotions of the hospital through word of
mouth from previous patients, indicates effective treatments among patients during could al,
etc.

Recommendations

34. Nurses should continue and improve the collection of data from their patients in order
for them to know their patient very well and treat them properly.

35. Nurses during orientation phase should continuously learn techniques on how to pass
information properly and effectively to their patients. Techniques in areas like
communication (language to use), approach and attitude. In this way nurses and patient
with different civil status, gender, religion, social class, etc. can effectively absorbed and
pass information. Short programs or refresher courses could also be offered to hospitals
in order to break the daily routine of nurses and refresh their minds and learning
capabilities.

36. Nurses during working phase should practice on how to take opinion/s, comment/s or
suggestion/s from patients professionally whether it is best, good, bad or worst.
Attending workshop/s, seminar/s or getting an advice from experienced medical health
personnel can help them enhance their openness especially in taking and assiting the
worst attitude of patients they might encounter. Being helpful and responsive can also
be achieved by nurses through good time management. Nurses learning this technique
can be more productive compared to those who are not.

37. Nurses should train often if possible once a month for a refresher course to keep them
updated in the new trends under nursing care.
