Introduction
Bill headings traditionally describe the work of the Bill items listed below the heading with
the amount of the Bill heading derived from the amounts of the Bill items.
On certain contracts, the client issues a Bill of Quantities made up of Bill headings only
and it is the responsibility of the tenderer to measure the Bill items that are required in
that Heading item.
A Bill quantity can now be entered against headings in the BOQ. The amount against a
heading is calculated by adding the amounts from the 'child' items below – the Heading
amount is then divided by the Heading quantity to derive the Heading rate.

Method
On any Bill document simply add the unit and quantity to the heading, it will derive the
an amount by summing the amounts of the ‘children’ below, and the Heading rate will be
derived from the summed amount divided by the Heading quantity.

As can be seen above, a unit and quantity has been applied against the Heading
“CLEANING AND GRUBBING”, the amount of 189,012.66 is the summation of the four
“children” below, and the rate of 37.80 is derived from 189,012.66 divided by 5,000.
NB The next Heading of the same level determines the end of the group. If a Heading
has no unit and quantity there will be no rate calculated.

The following example demonstrates that by applying a unit and quantity to a lower level
heading results in the items below contributing to the amount of both Headings.

The amount for ROAD CONSTRUCTION of 4,474,583.64 is the summation of all level 3
Headings below, each of which have their own group of “children”. For example, the
amount of 991,733 is the summation of the “children” below the Heading “PRIME COAT”
which contributes to the level 2 Heading above, “ROAD CONSTRUCTION”.

Valuations
Valuation quantities are progressed in the same manner, but in this case the Claimed
quantity is derived by summing the amounts of the “children” divided by the Heading
rate, as per examples below.
