HYDROLOGY- precipitation

Homework No. 1

Due on: 15 November, 2018

1. The coordinates of four

Isohyetal interval (in.) Area (acres) precipitation gauging
stations are A = (3,4), B = (9,4),
C= 0-2 2700 (3,12),and D = (9,12).
The 2-4 1900 observed
4-6 1000 precipitation amounts
6-8 0
at these gauges are PA =
25mm, PB = 33mm, PC = 20mm, PD = 29mm, respectively. These stations are located in a rectangular
basin whose boundaries are defined by the following coordinates (0,0), (14,0), (14,13), (0,13). If the units
of the coordinate points given above are km, compute the mean areal precipitation over this basin using

a) The Thiessen polygons method

b) The arithmetic average method

In addition, compute the total volume of water produced by the recorded rainfall.

2. Assume that a network of 5 precipitation gauging station operates in a given basin. For a specific
storm, one of the gauges malfunctioned and no data was collected. For that storm, the precipitation
amounts recorded at the other stations are as tabulated below,

Use the inverse distance squared method to estimate the missing precipitation amount. The distances
between these four gauges and the gauge that malfunctioned are: d1,5 = 10 km; d2,5 = 15km; d3,5 = 20 km;
d4,5 = 20 km.

3. Drainage areas within each of the isohyetal lines for a storm are tabulated for a watershed. Use
the isohyetal method to determine the average precipitation depth within the basin for the storrn.
Make a conceptual sketch.
4. Rework Problem 4.10 if the values in column 2 of the table are 2500, 2100, 1200 and 300,
respectively.

Isohyetal interval (in.) Area (acres)

0-2 2500
2-4 2100
4-6 1200
6-8 300
