Designing the Experiment: two sheets of

Divide the class into 4 groups using the materials the fine sand

1. Spread the newspaper on a table. Do the activity
on the newspaper.
2. Arrange the two sheets of cardboard edge to edge.

3.Pour sand along the boundary of the two sheets


4.With the ruler, flatten the top of the sand and make
two parallel lines.

5. Now move the sheets slowly in the direction

1. As you move the sheets, what is found in the


sand?
2. What happens to the lines?

ELABORATE (ICT)
The teacher will elaborate the lesson by discussing Powerpoint

Concepts:
* Faults are cracks in rock caused by forces that
compress or stretch a section of earth’s crust. Earth’s
crust is divided up into several tectonic plates that
essentially float on a mantle of plastic, partially
melted rocks. These plates slide under or slide past
one another, stressing the rock along the edges of
each plate.
* It is a break in the Earth’s crust, and along the
break, significant movement has taken place.
Earthquakes are associated with faults. When a fault
suddenly moves, an earthquake occurs.

EVALUATE (LANGUAGE)
Written test: Pen and paper

*Compare what you see in the picture and what you


saw in the activity.
*Is there something in the picture that looks like
what was formed in the activity?
*Do you see anything similar?

EXTEND (Language/ History)


Bring picture with a cut across the road or with two Picture
sections just like the image shown to you before the Pen and paper
activity started. (located only in the Philippines)

Spot the fault in the picture and make an essay about


it.
