REVIEW: A specialist in Christian-Muslim relations, Cucarella focuses on the polemic work translated as Splendid
Replies to Insolent Questions by Egyptian Maliki jurist al-Qarafi (626-684/1228-1285). On the surface, he says, it
was a response by one 13th-century Muslim scholar in Cairo to one letter written in Arabic by Paul of Antioch, the
Melkite writer and Bishop of Sidon, to a Muslim friend. But both the letter and the response incorporate substantial
amounts of material and arguments from previous works that other Christian and Muslim writers had composed
about each others' faith. It is within this historical and literary framework of this larger debate that he analyzes the
text. (© Ringgold, Inc., Portland, OR)
