! There is a lot of activity in Karlsruhe as the town is working on a ground breaking
infrastructure project – the „combined solution“. By 2019, a railway tunnel
and a road tunnel will be built in Karlsruhe. The goal is, amongst other things,
to have a rail-free pedestrian zone, which will make the Karlsruhe city centre
even more attractive in the future. As a result there are some partial traffic
restrictions. Please check well in advance for possible diversions. Information is

Town Hall

The Town Hall was completed in 1825 using plans drawn up by the city
architect Friedrich Weinbrenner. A statue of Mercury, the symbol for
trade and commerce, graces the top of the town hall tower. The centre of
the building features a pillared loggia. There is also a Glockenspiel here,

Zoological City Gardens

The Zoological City Gardens, which are also known as „the Green lung of
Karlsruhe“, are at 150 years old one of the oldest zoos is in Germany. The
particular attraction lies in the combination of zoo and gardens with 800 trees
from numerous countries as well as themed gardens like the Japanese garden
or the rose garden. Two lakes, connected by a canal, are in the centre of the
park, from where you can view the gardens and the generously sized animal
facilities by gondoletta – boats steered by a wire rope pull.
