EEE209: Engineering Electromagnetics

Assignment 1

Instructions for submission: Clear handwritten (scanned or image) copy of the assignment must be emailed
to mdzunaid@ieee.org within the given deadline. The name and student number should clearly appear on
the submitted assignment. First 10 students to submit the assignment having answered 80% of the questions
correctly will be awarded 20% bonus marks

Deadline of submission: 11 pm, 16 November, 2018

Reference: Elements of Electromagnetics by Alexander Sadiku (3rd Edition)

Topics: Vector Analysis

1. Given H=7ρ sinϕ aρ – 4 ρ z cosϕ aϕ + 3 ρ az , calculate the following at the point

(5, 45o, -2)
a) the component of H normal to aρ
b) the component of H along ay
c) the component of H tangential to ϕ=60o

2. Assuming your current location to be the origin, the height of a hill (in units of meters) is
described by the function:
h(x,y) = 10 (2xy – 3 x2 – 4y2 – 18x +28y +12)
Here x is the distance (in units of kilometers) along East and y is the distance (in units of
kilometers) along North.
(i) Where is the top of the hill located?
(ii) How high is the hill?
(iii) How steep is the slope (in meters per kilometers) at a point 1 kilometer North and 1
kilometer East from your location? Along which direction is this slope steepest at that
point?

3. A vector field is described by A=ar 5r +az 3z

a) Find the total outward flux over a circular cylinder around the z axis which has a radius of 4
cm and height of 7 cm centered at the origin.
b) Find  . A and verify the divergence theorem.

4. Practice Exercise problem 3.11 (page 86 of text book)

5. Exercise problem 3.44 (page 99 of text book)
