1) Develop the complete Product Configuration for the marker used to write on white board in
the classrooms. Make sure that all individual unit functions are identified, and part geometry
and material are configured, which will ultimately lead to final product configuration. (Group
work)

2) Figure 1 (see next page) shows the top and down tubes of a bicycle frame. Determine a
combination of material properties, which can either be maximized or minimized, if the
customer; (Individual work)

a) Wants to have a minimum mass frame with high strength. The constraint is the outer
diameter of the tube (i.e. the outer diameter of the tube cannot be changed). The function
of the tube is to carry bending load.
b) Wants to have a minimum mass frame with high stiffness. The constraint is the same as
in (a) but the function of the tube is to carry torsional load.
c) Solve (a), if the constraint is the ratio of outer diameter to wall thickness of the tube.
