Mildred Engelman
March 30, 1919 – October 30, 2018
San Mateo
Mildred Engelman, a long-time resident of San Mateo, passed
away peacefully at her home October 30, 2018. She was born
March 30, 1919, in Brooklyn, New York, to Max and Ida Klass.
Mildred spent her childhood in Brooklyn, graduating from a
local business school at an early age. She moved to California
in 1938, first living in Oakland and then San Francisco.
She worked for many years as a bookkeeper for a jewelry store in downtown San
Francisco. In 1951 she met Theodore (Ted) Engelman, and on November 4, 1951,
they married and moved to San Mateo. During the 1950s Mildred was an active
member of Peninsula B’nai B’rith, the Peninsula Temple Beth El Sisterhood, and
the Hadassah Foundation. For the second half of Mildred’s life her passion became
playing duplicate bridge. Up until a few months before her passing, she played at the
local bridge club four times a week as a Life Master. She and Ted traveled extensively,
not only to bridge tournaments, but also for sightseeing adventures. For a time, she
and Ted volunteered to teach English to Jewish Russian immigrants. Mildred was
also an avid San Francisco Giants baseball fan, attending dozens of baseball games at
Candlestick and AT&T Parks. She also enjoyed crocheting colorful afghans, donating
hundreds to charities.
Mildred is survived by her sons, Lionel Engelman and his wife Evelyn, and Mark
Engelman; daughter, Maxine McCarthy and her husband Kevin; grandchildren, Julie
Johnson and her husband Stuart, and Scott Engelman and his wife Jessica; great-
grandchildren, Hatcher and Madeline Johnson, and Flora and Max Engelman;
nephews, Robert Klass and Max Klass; niece, Eileen Klass; and several great
nephews and great nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ted Engelman;
brothers, Saul Klass and Aaron Klass; sister, Anne Brodsky; nephew, Donald Klass;
and niece, Helene King. A private burial service was held November 4, 2018, at the
Home of Peace Cemetery in Colma. Mildred was buried in a gravesite adjacent to her
husband, both being reunited on the day of their 67th wedding anniversary. For those
who desire, the family suggests memorial contributions be sent to Jewish Family and
Children’s Services (www.jfcs.org) or any charity of your choice.

While M-A’s volleyball season ended Tuesday, Nov. 6,
Fischer didn’t waste any time taking a day off. The next day,
she was in the M-A gym taking part in her first basketball
practice of the year.
Fischer splits time between volleyball and basketball not
just as an overall athlete, but emotionally as well. The rea-
son, she said, is because she has two parents who are also
athletes. Her father Dave comes from a basketball back-
ground. Her mother Sue Bartalo comes from a volleyball
background.
“Which is why I don’t pick sides,” Fischer said. “I love
them equally so I don’t pick sides.”
A three-year varsity volleyball player, Fischer began her
career as a libero when she was a sophomore. Last season,
she played predominantly as a defensive specialist, while
now-graduated Nicole Kang donned the libero jersey. This
year, Fischer returned to her natural position.
“She made it her own in terms of the way she tackled it as
a volleyball player,” Sierra said.
Letvin and junior middle Merit Hoyem were M-A’s other
two first-team all-Bay Division players. In the PAL Ocean
Division, Terra Nova sophomore Arianne Herrera was named
league MVP.
