SECTION A: COMPULSORY

QUESTION 1: (40 MARKS)

CASE STUDY

You have been newly appointed as team leader of a Management department


consisting of 5 team members. The team has not been performing well in the
past and your main aims are to consolidate team work and increase team
performance.

(a) What strategies would you use to evaluate the team’s performance?
(10 marks)

(b) By using Belbin’s concept of team members’ role, provide 5 members’ role
that you would wish to emphasise in your team. (5 marks)

(c) What are the characteristics of good team leadership? (10 marks)

(d) Which strategies would you use to solve an emerging conflict? (15 marks)

(a) Describe the various stages in team development. (10 marks)

(b) What are the characteristics of an effective work team? (20 marks)

(a) Define Leadership. (5 marks)

(b) ‘Leaders and managers are not necessarily the same persons in an
organization. The differences between leaders are due to a large extent
because of sources of power within an organization’. Explain the differences
between a leader and a manager. (25 marks)

QUESTION 4: (30 MARKS)

(a) "Teams definitely are forms of work groups, but not all work groups are
teams". Work groups function on three levels: Dependent level, Independent
level and Interdependent level. Elaborate on the characteristics of each level
of work groups giving examples, as appropriate. (15 marks)

(b) There are marked differences between a team and a work group. Write briefly
on any 10 differences between a team and a work group. (15 marks)

QUESTION 5: (30 MARKS)

(a) Write short notes on any five leadership theories and on any three main
leadership styles. (15 marks)

(b) Your friend has just been appointed team leader at his place of work. He
wants to benefit from your knowledge of leadership. Write short notes on any
8 roles of a team leader for your friend. (15 marks)
