I’ve
presented
this
task
at
two
levels
of
difficulty.
Both
levels
have
the
same
answer,
provided
on
the
last
page.
The
style
is
mid-‐19th
century
Northern
European,
when
some
composers
were
pushing
how
much
dissonance
you
could
pack
into
otherwise
simple
harmonic
structures.
If
you
went
well
in
the
class
test
–
perhaps
you
didn’t
think
it
was
even
all
that
difficult
-‐
your
task
is
to
analyse
this
fragment
as
presented
in
Version
1,
labelling
all
chords
with
Roman
numerals
below
the
stave,
and
appending
an
embellishment
label
to
all
non-‐chord
notes
in
all
four
voices.
This
task
will
be
too
difficult
for
most
students,
because
of
the
difficulty
of
determining
which
pitches
are
chord
pitches.
We
will
learn
some
techniques
for
dealing
with
this
problem,
but
won’t
get
this
far
this
semester
–
this
is
an
extension
activity
for
students
who
are
yet
to
feel
challenged
by
the
course.
Most
students
should
use
Version
2,
which
already
includes
a
Roman
numeral
analysis.
Use
this
analysis
to
determine
which
notes
are
non-‐chord
notes
(that
is,
which
notes
are
dissonant)
and
label
them
with
the
appropriate
embellishment
labels.
One
notational
convention
you
have
not
seen
is
the
use
of
inversion
figures
without
a
Roman
numeral.
This
is
used
to
show
that
the
root
of
the
chord
has
not
changed,
but
rather
the
same
chord
has
been
re-‐presented
in
a
new
inversion.
It
is
also
used
to
show
the
addition
(or
sometimes
the
removal)
of
an
added
seventh
to
a
chord.
The
second
class
test
will
include
both
types
of
question.
You
will
be
given
one
question
with
a
chordal
analysis
and
be
asked
to
label
the
embellishments
in
a
way
that
is
consistent
with
that
analysis,
and
one
(much
easier)
question
where
you
will
need
to
label
both
the
chords
and
embellishments
yourself.
While
most
of
the
task
revises
material
as
presented
in
Lecture
5,
the
alto
voice
in
bar
1
and
the
bass
voice
in
bar
6
do
things
we
have
not
yet
covered.
See
if
you
can
work
out
what
is
going
on
in
those
spots.
