Power Quality Issues in Induction Furnace

Objective: Investigate the effect of power quality on induction furnaces

General power quality Issue

Power Quality may be defined as a terms of voltages and a scheme plan so that the user of
electric power can develop electric energy from the sharing system successfully, without
interference on interruption. The term Power Quality is defined in the Institute of Electrical and
Electronics Engineers Standard Terms as "the concept of powering and grounding electronic
equipment in a way that is appropriate to the process of that equipment and well-matched
with the premise wiring system and other connected equipment."

harms like power surges, sags, poor voltage and frequency regulation, harmonics, switching
transients, electrical sound and the Electro-Magnetic Interference effect are often encountered

Induction furnaces are used in wide quantity under different capacities for annual
production of around 25 million tons of iron and steel in India. It plays a vital role in
various manufacturing processes around the world for melting different types of
metal scraps i. e. Copper, Cast Iron, Aluminium, Steel, Brass, Bronze, Silicon, Gold,
Silver etc. which are further used in many other industrial applications. The induction
furnace causes a huge disturbance to the utility and nearby consumers during its
operation due to its non-linear characteristics
IMPACT OF POWER QUALITY PROBLEMS
Harmonic distortion
Voltage or current waveforms assume non-sinusoidal shape. The waveform corresponds to the sum of dif
frequencies that are multiples of power-system frequency. Main Causes are Classic sources: electric m
(magnetic saturation), arc furnaces, welding machines, rectifiers, and DC brush motors.

Noise
Superimposing of high frequency signals on the waveform of the power-system frequency. Main Caus
waves such as microwaves, television diffusion, and radiation due to welding machines, arc furnaces

Voltage Unbalance
A voltage variation in a three-phase system in which the three voltage magnitudes or the phase angle
single-phase loads (induction furnaces, traction loads), incorrect distribution of all single-phase loads by
fault). Consequences are Unbalanced systems imply the existence of a negative sequence that is harmful

Voltage fluctuation
Oscillation of voltage value, amplitude modulated by a signal with frequency of 0 to 30 Hz. Causes are arc
elevators), oscillating loads. Consequences are most consequences are common to under voltages. The m
screens, giving the impression of unsteadiness of visual perception [1].
