INTRODUCTION
1. It is a significant advantage for an Army to have the ability to operate and fight at night.
Night vision devices allow soldiers to shoot, drive armored vehicles, and operate aircraft at
extremely low or no visible light conditions. In order to take full advantage of these devices,
proper maintenance is the key. The family of night vision devices is large and you must acquaint
yourself with the characteristics and types of night vision devices you are responsible for
maintaining.
2. This subcourse will present interim procedures for the use of the purge device with the
following night vision/thermal devices:
The night vision goggles AN/PVS-7A and AN/PVS-7B were specifically designed for
use with the purge device and are among the newest members of the night vision family. For
this reason, the purge procedures for these devices are included in this subcourse. You are
reminded that these procedures were designed and tested at the Special Electronic Devices
Repairer Course and approved for general use until superseded by the technical manual.
3. The purging kit, fire control can be used by itself to purge many of the night vision
devices discussed in this subcourse. However it is important to note that a special purpose purge
adapter not included in the purge kit must be used. The basic purging kit (NSN 4931-00-065-
1110) consists of the following items:
xii
INTRODUCTION (Continued)
4. Purging kit, fire control is the standard dry nitrogen charging system authorized for use
with all night vision devices covered in this subcourse. Another system has been introduced
called the purge device which has the same function as the purging kit fire control with added
features. The purge device is used with the purging kit fire control and provides the ability to
apply vacuum to a sealed device to determine prior to charging if there are any leaks. The purge
device (NSN 5855-01-246-6815) consists of the following: (See Figure 1.)
* Vacuum hose set - Consists of three hoses and one hand pump.
* Device housing - Consists of a connection box with two switches, a gauge, and
relief valve.
* Carrying case - A soft-sided case for carrying and storing the purge device.
5. The purge device is specifically called for in the purging of night vision goggles
AN/PVS-5/A/B/C and AN/PVS-7A/B. However at present there are no specific instructions on
its use with other night vision devices. It should be noted that the use of the purge device
eliminates the need to open the sealed cavity of the night vision device. Generally, night vision
devices should be purged and filled a total of four times. The initial purge and fill, plus three
additional purge and fill actions, comprise a complete cycle of the purging of night vision
devices.
xiii
INTRODUCTION (Continued)
Figure 1
6. The purging of night vision devices starts with the setup of purge and charging
equipment. The procedures for the setup are outlined in TM 750-116, Chapter 3, paragraph 3-
2.a. These procedures are outlined below: (See Figure 2.)
a. Obtain a tank (7) of dry nitrogen and remove threaded protective cover (6) from the
outlet of the tank. Secure nitrogen tank (7) in upright position. Open tank valve (5) momentarily
to rid valve seat of any foreign matter.
b. Securely attach regulator (2) to tank valve (5) using appropriate adapter supplied with
purging kit if necessary.
d. Rotate pressure regulator valve (4) counterclockwise to the extreme closed position.
e. Open the nitrogen tank valve (5) slowly until the maximum tank pressure is registered
on the high pressure gauge (3). If pressure is below 50 pounds, replace tank.
f. Slowly rotate pressure regulator valve (4) clockwise until approximately 5 PSI is
registered on the low pressure gauge (1). Check for and eliminate any interference; close
pressure regulator valve (4).

7. Time cycles vary for the purge and charge of night vision devices. TM 750-116 states
that maintenance personnel will purge and charge night vision devices every 90 days or when
condensation is evident in the device. The 90 day cycle does not apply to all night vision
devices. However, a visual inspection is required every 90 days for evidence of moisture.
Maintenance personnel will purge and charge night vision devices being repaired whenever the
repair function affects internal sealing.

INTRODUCTION (Continued)
8. After you have completed this subcourse, you will be able to properly purge the aviator's
night vision imaging system (AN/VAS-6(V)1/2), night vision goggles (AN/PVS-5/A/B/C,
AN/PVS-7A and B), viewer infrared (AN/PAS-7A), driver's night vision viewer (AN/VVS-
2(V)).
This subcourse consists of six lessons, and a performance (hands-on with equipment) End-of-
Subcourse Practice Exercise, which are related to the following Terminal Learning Objectives:
CONDITIONS: Given lesson materials 1 through 6, pencil, paper, TM extracts, and without
supervision.

as such on the maintenance forms (DA Form(s) 2407 or 5504 and 2404). You must now purge
the AN/AVS-6(V)1/2 and make it fully mission-capable as quickly as possible. This
maintenance action can be performed under all weather conditions and in a NBC environment.
Under these tactical conditions you must demonstrate your ability to properly purge the aviator's
night vision imaging system AN/AVS-6(V)1/2.
2. The monocular body of the ANVIS is filled with dry nitrogen and sealed to prevent dirt
and moisture from degrading the optical performance during use. The purge procedure was
developed so this dry nitrogen environment can be maintained throughout the useful life of this
device, and ensure good optical performance which the user must have to prevent personnel
injury or damage to equipment.
3. Before any attempt to purge any night vision device is made, there are some specific
actions you, the 39E maintainer should take:
5. When performing maintenance task on night vision devices, observe the special handling
requirements for nickel-cadmium batteries that contain sulphur dioxide gas under pressure.
There is an explosive danger with these types of batteries. The image intensifier tube in each
monocular contains toxic materials. If the tube breaks, guard against inhaling or swallowing
phosphor screen material. Ensure that nitrogen tank is secure to prevent personnel injury prior to
installing the purge kit. Prior to purging and filling any night vision device, an operational check
and troubleshooting procedure should be conducted on the purge device as outlined in TM 11-
5855-262-24-1, Annex A, page A-2.
2
6. This task cannot be performed without the special tools listed in the technical manual.
Ensure their availability and serviceable condition. These required items are:
7. Familiarity with the aviator's night vision imaging system AN/AVS-6(V)1/2 is necessary
to effectively perform this task. Figure 1-1 illustrates the primary controls and indicators of the
AN/AVS-6(V)1/2.
