INTRODUCTION

1. It is a significant advantage for an Army to have the ability to operate and fight at night.
Night vision devices allow soldiers to shoot, drive armored vehicles, and operate aircraft at
extremely low or no visible light conditions. In order to take full advantage of these devices,
proper maintenance is the key. The family of night vision devices is large and you must acquaint
yourself with the characteristics and types of night vision devices you are responsible for
maintaining.

2. This subcourse will present interim procedures for the use of the purge device with the
following night vision/thermal devices:

* Aviator's night vision imaging system AN/AVS-6(V)1/2

* Night vision goggles AN/PVS-5/A/B/C
* Viewer infrared AN/PAS-7A
* Driver's night vision viewer AN/VVS-2(V)

The night vision goggles AN/PVS-7A and AN/PVS-7B were specifically designed for
use with the purge device and are among the newest members of the night vision family. For
this reason, the purge procedures for these devices are included in this subcourse. You are
reminded that these procedures were designed and tested at the Special Electronic Devices
Repairer Course and approved for general use until superseded by the technical manual.

3. The purging kit, fire control can be used by itself to purge many of the night vision
devices discussed in this subcourse. However it is important to note that a special purpose purge
adapter not included in the purge kit must be used. The basic purging kit (NSN 4931-00-065-
1110) consists of the following items:

* Adapter hose 4730-00-951-8263

* Hose assembly 4720-00-561-0713
* Kit, adapter assembly 4931-00-936-4283
* Consisting of:
1 Adapter: 10-32UNF-2A
1 Adapter: 10-24UNC-2A
1 Adapter: 8-32UNC-2A
* Regulator, nitrogen, pressure: 4931-00-135-5064
Outlet pressure gauge - 0 to 60 PSI
Inlet pressure gauge - 0 to 4000 PSI
* Valve, extension 4931-00-222-9056
* Adapter, hose 4730-00-951-8264
* Adapter, nitrogen filling 4931-00-508-5453
* Nut, cylinder valve 4730-00-068-5756

INTRODUCTION (Continued)

4. Purging kit, fire control is the standard dry nitrogen charging system authorized for use
with all night vision devices covered in this subcourse. Another system has been introduced
called the purge device which has the same function as the purging kit fire control with added
features. The purge device is used with the purging kit fire control and provides the ability to
apply vacuum to a sealed device to determine prior to charging if there are any leaks. The purge
device (NSN 5855-01-246-6815) consists of the following: (See Figure 1.)

* Vacuum hose set - Consists of three hoses and one hand pump.

* Device housing - Consists of a connection box with two switches, a gauge, and
relief valve.

* Valve - Consists of one AN/PVS-5/ABC/7AB connector adapter and one screw

on hose adapter that permits use with other night vision systems.

* Tool - A tool to remove the purge cover of the AN/PVS-7A.

* Carrying case - A soft-sided case for carrying and storing the purge device.

5. The purge device is specifically called for in the purging of night vision goggles
AN/PVS-5/A/B/C and AN/PVS-7A/B. However at present there are no specific instructions on
its use with other night vision devices. It should be noted that the use of the purge device
eliminates the need to open the sealed cavity of the night vision device. Generally, night vision
devices should be purged and filled a total of four times. The initial purge and fill, plus three
additional purge and fill actions, comprise a complete cycle of the purging of night vision
devices.

xiii
INTRODUCTION (Continued)

Figure 1

6. The purging of night vision devices starts with the setup of purge and charging
equipment. The procedures for the setup are outlined in TM 750-116, Chapter 3, paragraph 3-
2.a. These procedures are outlined below: (See Figure 2.)

a. Obtain a tank (7) of dry nitrogen and remove threaded protective cover (6) from the
outlet of the tank. Secure nitrogen tank (7) in upright position. Open tank valve (5) momentarily
to rid valve seat of any foreign matter.

b. Securely attach regulator (2) to tank valve (5) using appropriate adapter supplied with
purging kit if necessary.

c. Securely attach hose assemble (8) to the adapter (9).

d. Rotate pressure regulator valve (4) counterclockwise to the extreme closed position.

e. Open the nitrogen tank valve (5) slowly until the maximum tank pressure is registered
on the high pressure gauge (3). If pressure is below 50 pounds, replace tank.

f. Slowly rotate pressure regulator valve (4) clockwise until approximately 5 PSI is
registered on the low pressure gauge (1). Check for and eliminate any interference; close
pressure regulator valve (4).

INTRODUCTION (Continued)

Figure 2

7. Time cycles vary for the purge and charge of night vision devices. TM 750-116 states
that maintenance personnel will purge and charge night vision devices every 90 days or when
condensation is evident in the device. The 90 day cycle does not apply to all night vision
devices. However, a visual inspection is required every 90 days for evidence of moisture.
Maintenance personnel will purge and charge night vision devices being repaired whenever the
repair function affects internal sealing.

xv
INTRODUCTION (Continued)

Learning Event 1:
Purge Aviator's Night Vision Imaging System AN/AVS-6(V)1/2

1. Situation. Tactical scenario environmental conditions. Soldier is assigned to a

direct support unit as a Special Electronic Devices Repairer; at a permanent or semipermanent
facility or mobile shop van. An aviator's night vision imaging system AN/AVS-6(V)1/2
is job ordered to your maintenance shop with a Maintenance Request (DA Form 2407 or 5504)
and Equipment Inspection and Maintenance Worksheet DA Form 2404 indicating a 02
priority and the deficiency requiring work is, "degraded optical performance due to
fogging." Results of technical inspection reveal the AN/AVS-6(V)l/2 electronics are in good
order, however optical performance indicates purging is required and is recorded

1
as such on the maintenance forms (DA Form(s) 2407 or 5504 and 2404). You must now purge
the AN/AVS-6(V)1/2 and make it fully mission-capable as quickly as possible. This
maintenance action can be performed under all weather conditions and in a NBC environment.
Under these tactical conditions you must demonstrate your ability to properly purge the aviator's
night vision imaging system AN/AVS-6(V)1/2.

2. The monocular body of the ANVIS is filled with dry nitrogen and sealed to prevent dirt
and moisture from degrading the optical performance during use. The purge procedure was
developed so this dry nitrogen environment can be maintained throughout the useful life of this
device, and ensure good optical performance which the user must have to prevent personnel
injury or damage to equipment.

3. Before any attempt to purge any night vision device is made, there are some specific
actions you, the 39E maintainer should take:

* Review all maintenance forms prior to doing any work.

* Observe all safety precautions, with particular attention to all warnings and
cautions outlined in TMs .
* Ensure all required special tools are available and in good working order.
* Ensure purge station is assembled IAW TM 750-116.

4. Maintenance Request DA Form 2407 or 5504 and Equipment Inspection and

Maintenance Worksheet DA Form 2404 must be completed IAW TM 738-750 and local SOP's.
These documents provide critical information on non-mission-capable (NMC) time on night
vision devices, as well as, capturing the man-hours you expend on the maintenance of these
devices.

5. When performing maintenance task on night vision devices, observe the special handling
requirements for nickel-cadmium batteries that contain sulphur dioxide gas under pressure.
There is an explosive danger with these types of batteries. The image intensifier tube in each
monocular contains toxic materials. If the tube breaks, guard against inhaling or swallowing
phosphor screen material. Ensure that nitrogen tank is secure to prevent personnel injury prior to
installing the purge kit. Prior to purging and filling any night vision device, an operational check
and troubleshooting procedure should be conducted on the purge device as outlined in TM 11-
5855-262-24-1, Annex A, page A-2.

2
6. This task cannot be performed without the special tools listed in the technical manual.
Ensure their availability and serviceable condition. These required items are:

* Wrench assembly, locking ring (spanner wrench)

* Purging kit, fire control (NSN 4931-00-065-1110)
* Purge, adapter (NSN 5855-01-151-4211)
* Screwdriver, flat-tip, 5/32 inch
* Screwdriver, offset flat-tip, 5/32 inch

7. Familiarity with the aviator's night vision imaging system AN/AVS-6(V)1/2 is necessary
to effectively perform this task. Figure 1-1 illustrates the primary controls and indicators of the
AN/AVS-6(V)1/2.

3
Figure 1-1

4
8. The purge procedure outlined in TM 11-5855-263-40, Chapter 2, paragraph 2-18 must be
modified as indicated below in order to utilize the purge device. The purge device will eliminate
the need to open the monocular assembly. The procedure is performed as follows:

Step 1. Ensure that valves are closed on the fire control purging tool and nitrogen tank
before connecting equipment. Connect purge kit, fire control to nitrogen tank and
purge device as shown in Figure 1-2.

Step 2. Set regulator valve handle (1) for zero by rotating control (counterclockwise) until
there is no spring pressure on control.

Step 3. Open nitrogen tank valve (5). The high pressure gauge (4) will indicate tank
pressure. If pressure is below 50 pounds, replace tank.

Step 4. Set purge device (8) PUMP/NITROGEN switch (11) to PUMP and LEAK
TEST/PURGE (10) switch to PURGE.

Step 5. Slowly adjust regulator handle (1) by turning it clockwise until low pressure
gauge (3) indicates 4 PSI. Purge device gauge (9) should indicate 0 ± 1 PSI and
you should hear gas escaping.

Learning Event 1:

Purge Night Vision Goggles AN/PVS-5/A/B/C.

1. Situation. Tactical scenario environmental conditions. Soldier is assigned to

a direct support unit as a Special Electronic Devices Repairer; at a permanent or
semipermanent facility or mobile shop van. Night vision goggles AN/PVS-5/A/B/C
is job ordered to your maintenance shop with a Maintenance Request (DA Form 2407 or 5504)
and Equipment Inspection and Maintenance Worksheet DA Form 2404 indicating a 02
priority and the deficiency requiring work is, "degraded optical performance due to fogging."
Results of technical inspection reveal the AN/PVS-5/A/B/C electronics are in good
order, however optical performance indicates purging is required and is recorded as such
on the Maintenance Forms (DA Form(s) 2407 or 5504 and 2404). You must now purge the

12
AN/PVS-5/A/B/C and make it fully mission-capable as quickly as possible. This maintenance
action can be performed under all weather conditions and in a NBC environment. Under these
tactical conditions you must demonstrate your ability to properly purge the night vision goggles
AN/PVS-5/A/B/C.

2. The monocular body of the NVGs is filled with dry nitrogen and sealed to prevent dirt
and moisture from degrading the optical performance during use.

These documents provide critical information on non-mission-capable (NMC) time on night
vision devices, as well as capturing the man-hours you expend on the maintenance of these
devices.

5. When performing maintenance task on night vision devices, observe the special handling
requirements for nickel-cadmium batteries that contain sulphur dioxide gas under pressure.
There is an explosive danger with these types of batteries. The image intensifier tube in each
monocular contains toxic materials. If tube breaks guard against inhaling or swallowing
phosphor screen material. Ensure that nitrogen tank is secure to prevent personnel injury prior to
installing the purge kit. Prior to purging and filling any night vision device, an operational check
and troubleshooting procedure should be performed on the purge device IAW TM 11-5855-262-
24-1, Annex A, page A-2.

13
6. This task cannot be performed without the special tools listed in the technical manual.

1. Situation. Tactical scenario environmental conditions. Soldier is assigned to a

direct support unit as a Special Electronic Devices Repairer at a permanent or
semipermanent facility or mobile shop van. A driver's night vision viewer AN/VVS-2(V)1
is job ordered to your maintenance shop with a Maintenance Request (DA Form 2407 or 5504)
and Equipment Inspection and Maintenance Worksheet DA Form 2404 indicating a 02
priority and the deficiency requiring work is, "degraded optical performance due to
fogging." Results of technical inspection reveal the AN/VVS-2(V)1 electronics are
in good order, however optical performance indicates purging is required and is recorded
as such on the Maintenance Forms (DA Form(s) 2407 or 5504). You must now purge the
AN/VVS-(V)1 and make it fully mission-capable as quickly as possible. This maintenance

36
action can be performed under all weather conditions and in an NBC environment. Under these
tactical conditions you must demonstrate your ability to properly purge the driver's night vision
viewer AN/VVS-2(V)1.

2. The body of the AN/VVS-2(V)l is filled with dry nitrogen and sealed to prevent dirt and
moisture from degrading the optical performance during use. The purge procedure was
developed so this dry nitrogen environment can be maintained throughout the useful life of. this
device, and ensure good optical performance which the user must have to prevent personnel
injury or damage to equipment.

3. Before any attempt to purge any night vision device is made, there are some specific
actions you, the 39E maintainer should take:

* Review all maintenance forms prior to doing any work.

These documents provide critical information on nonmission-capable (NMC) time on night
vision devices, as well as capturing the man-hours you expend on the maintenance of these
devices.

37

* Ensure all required special tools are available and in good working order.

* Ensure purge station is assembled IAW TM 750-116.

4. Maintenance Request DA Form 2407 or 5504 and Equipment Inspection and

Maintenance Worksheet DA Form 2404 must be completed IAW TM 738-750 and local SOP's.
These documents provide critical information on non-mission-capable (NMC) time on night
vision devices, as well as, capturing the man-hours you expend on the maintenance of these
devices.

5. When performing maintenance task on night vision device, observe the special handling
requirements for nickel-cadmium batteries that contain sulphur dioxide gas under pressure.

59
6. This task cannot be performed without the special tools listed in the technical manual.
Ensure their availability and serviceable condition. These required items are:

* Purging nitrogen, technical tank (NSN 6830-00-264-9086)

* Tool kit, fire control (NSN 4931-00-065-1110)

* Nitrogen purge, adapter (NSN 5855-01-125-0807)

* Purge device (NSN 5855-01-246-6815)

* Plier, slip joint (NSN 5120-00-624-8069)

7. Familiarity with the night vision goggle AN/PVS-7B is necessary to effectively perform
this task. Figure 6-1 illustrates the primary controls and indicators of the AN/PVS-7B.

60
Figure 6-1. Night vision goggle assembly functional features and accessory items

8. The night vision goggle AN/PVS-7B was designed specifically to be charged and filled
with the purge device as outlined in TM 11-5855-262-24-2. This is the only authorized method
to purge the night vision goggle AN/PVS-7B. It is not recommended that the purge kit, fire
control be used to purge and fill the night vision goggle. The construction of the AN/PVS-7B
does not provide for nitrogen flow through. The night vision goggle wire body assembly is made
of plastic, and charging the goggle with nitrogen at greater than 3 PSI could result in personnel
injury or damage to the equipment.

9. Prior to purging and filling the night vision goggle, an operational check and
troubleshooting procedure should be conducted on the purge device as outlined in TM 11-5855-
262-24-1, Annex A, page A-2.

10. The following procedure is to be followed when purging the night vision goggle
AN/PVS-7B, and is IAW TM 11-5855-262-24-2, paragraph 4-6.8 nitrogen purge and fill (see
TM extract on page 104):

61
Step 1. Ensure that valves are closed on the fire control purging tool and nitrogen tank
before connecting equipment. Connect purge kit, fire control to nitrogen tank and
purge device as shown in Figure 6-2.

Step 5. Slowly adjust regulator handle (1) by turning it clockwise until low pressure
gauge (3) indicates 3 + 1 PSI. Purge device gauge (9) should indicate 0 + 1 PSI
and you should hear gas escaping.

Step 6. Remove purge seal screw and 0-ring from rear cover assembly.

Step 7. Thread purge adapter approximately three turns into goggles rear cover assembly
in place of fill screw.

Step 8. Purge night vision goggle by pumping vacuum handle until purge device gauge
indicates greater than 20 inches of Hg.

Step 9. Position purge device LEAK TEST/PURGE switch (10) to LEAK TEST and
observe that the purge device gauge (9) indicates a steady vacuum reading of 20
inches or greater. If unable to observe a steady vacuum reading of 20 inches of
Hg or greater, a leak is present. Stop purge procedure and seal night vision
goggle leak(s). If purge device gauge (9) indicates a steady vacuum reading,
position purge device LEAK TEST/PURGE switch (10) to PURGE.

Step 10. Position purge device PUMP/NITROGEN switch to NITROGEN and observe
that the purge device gauge indicates 3  1 PSI.

62
Step 11. Position purge device LEAK TEST/PURGE switch (10) to LEAK TEST and
observe that the purge device gauge (9) indicates a steady pressure reading of
3 ± 1 PSI. If unable to observe a steady pressure reading of 3 ± 1 PSI, a leak is
present. Stop purge procedure and seal night vision goggle leak(s). If purge
device gauge (9) indicates a steady pressure reading, position purge device LEAK
TEST/PURGE switch (10) to PURGE.

Step 12. Prepare for continued purge/fill procedure or turn off nitrogen tank valve and
remove and store fire control tool set and purge device.
