Philadelphia Parking Authority Approves Martin Luther King Day as Non-Ticketing Holiday
Upon City Council Urging
In February 2018, Councilwoman Blondell Reynolds Brown
introduced Resolution No. 180082 “Urging the Philadelphia Parking
Authority to Recognize the Martin Luther King Day Holiday as a
Non-Ticketing Day.” 11 Councilmembers co-sponsored the bill which
unanimously passed.
The Philadelphia Parking Authority Board has indicated that it
intends to apply the same standard of enforcement as it does on the other
recognized non-ticketing holidays to Martin Luther King Day. Other
non-ticketing holidays include New Year’s Day, Easter Sunday,
Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and
Christmas Day.
Philadelphia Parking Authority Executive Director Scott Petri stated,
“We, at the PPA, are proud that we are part of a City and County that
leads the nation in volunteerism on MLK Day. Many of our employees
take the day to serve. We understand how important this day of
volunteerism is to communities throughout Philadelphia. The
Philadelphia Parking Authority is glad to help ease the concerns of all
those who volunteer their time on Martin Luther King Day.”

paid forward every year in his memory has become a hallmark of our

Philadelphia’s annual celebration of this holiday is one of the most
monumental MLK Day events in the United States. The Greater
Philadelphia Martin Luther King Day event is considered one of the
largest MLK events in the nation, with over 150,000 volunteers
participating in 1,800 service projects in 2018 alone.

ICAP INC Friends & Donor Launch

On Thursday, October 25th the Intergenerational Community
Alliances & Programs Inc. aka ICAP INC. was surrounded by friends,
faith and community representatives and sponsors to introduce its
mission to the public. The event was held at Independence LIVE with
food a plenty catered by Aramark. Fred Blain, radio personality from
Gospel Hwy 11.
The attendees were provided information by sponsors Independence,
Common Practice, FUNTIMES Magazine, Gift of LIFE Donor Program,
Stith & Associates Health Insurances, Always Best Care Senior Services,
Boomers R Heroes, Native Dawn Associates and Dubose Business &
Printing Services. “The Launch provided a quality atmosphere to
confirm our image as one of excellence in service to the faith and
community organizations” says Sandra Lawrence, CEO & Founder.
ICAP INC. has three areas of focus which are Palliative and Hospice
awareness and education; African American Heritage Program and BAV
Girl Phenomena Inc. Two collaborations were birthed at the event which
further emphasizes they are sincere and serious about service. As a part
of the Palliative and Hospice education component they will be the
collaborative partners for the Philadelphia and vicinity to facilitate the
Hello Conversation Game about living and dying. “We will provide
workshops and seminars to encourage and educate people to make
quality life care decisions to avoid crisis for caregivers and loved ones
during the end of life stage.
The Hello game helps to more comfortably discuss living and dying
issues.” Common Practice manufactures and created the game. ICAP
INC. will be the primary lead in introducing this game in the Philly area”
states Jethro Heiko, CEO of Common Practice the manufacturer and
creator.
The second collaboration is with Boomers R’ Heroes a Philadelphia
Caregiver Support Group. “Caregivers are often invisible to the public
but generally are the ones who need to assist loved ones in making right
life decisions. Knowledge is the key to proving better care to our loved
ones. ICAP INC. will provide the Hello Game and additional resources
to learn more about life planning from legal to funeral planning and all in
between” states Jean Kirkley, founder.
The second specialty focus is the African American Heritage Program
(AAHP) created and directed by Jacqueline Wiggins, retired educator and
a respected and noted Black historian. “There is so much history from
pre-enslavement to present that is not taught in our school system. Using
the faith community and community organizations as a gateway to
educate all ages about the many contributions made by African
Americans and others of African descent to the Philadelphia and
vicinity.” AAHP will include a docent/tour guide curriculum for
interested persons.
Thirdly, the BAV Girl Phenomena Inc, is a self and life esteem
program to support young and life seasoned women. This includes
discussing and evaluating abstinence and celibacy in order to build
healthy self and other relationships. For some it is a healing process and
others a learning tool including health, spirituality, physical and mental
wellness information.
ICAP INC. is well tuned with a strong support and advisory team.

2018 MARIAN ANDERSON AWARD DATE CHANGE ANNOUNCEMENT

The Marian Anderson Award will be rescheduling its 2018 Award
Gala originally scheduled for November 20, as Queen Latifah is unable
to accept this year due to personal reasons. We look forward to honoring
her in the future.

ANNENBERG CENTER LIVE 2018-2019 SEASON

The Annenberg Center’s 2018-19 season continues a commitment to
innovative, critically acclaimed productions—top contemporary dance
ensembles, cutting edge theatre productions, a diverse array of celebrated
jazz, classical, and world music artists, enriching family programs, and
festive holiday celebrations. Recently announced partner, NextMove
Dance, returns to the Annenberg Center for a co-presented series of 11
exceptional dance companies, including four performing in Philadelphia
for the first time. A new series, The Philadelphians, explores the
populations that came to and forever changed Philadelphia, through
period performance juxtaposed with new interpretations that look back
on the city’s history. Early music graces the Annenberg Center stage for
the first time, while two site-specific performances, in Rittenhouse
Square and a local pub, bring the Annenberg Center’s programming
beyond conventional theatre walls.
The Artist-in- Residence program continues with the renowned
Dance Theatre of Harlem, featuring a world premiere by Philadelphia
native and resident choreographer Robert Garland. Jazz pianists will be
in the spotlight, with intimate shows by three vibrant, young artists, and

The Sounds of Motown continue through December at
Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City on Sundays

After an astonishing summer and due to popular demand, Hard Rock
Hotel & Casino Atlantic City has extended Motor City Live: A Motown
Tribute Concert through December 9 with shows every Sunday at Sound
Waves.
Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, the Motown sound ascended out of
Detroit, combining pop, funk, R&B with fantastic singers and solid
songwriting to create the soundtrack for a generation.
This summer, visitors to Atlantic City had the chance to see and hear
for themselves what made Motown so special. The tribute features an
accomplished cast of singers, dancers and musicians, eye-catching
costumes, and stunning choreography.
“Enjoying a tremendously consistent response from our audiences
since opening night, we are absolutely thrilled to be able to extend our
production of Motor City Live to the Hard Rock audience until
December 9,” said director Allen Valentine.

Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City Saturday, November 24
Televised Live on HBO World Championship Boxing®
Dmitry Bivol will defend his WBA Light Heavyweight World Title
against former Olympian and former WBC, IBO, and Ring Magazine
champion Jean Pascal on Saturday, November 24, 2018 as boxing returns
to Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City.
The event will be promoted by Main Events and World of Boxing,
Bivol’s promoter, in association with Jean Pascal Promotions. The bout
will be televised live on HBO World Championship Boxing beginning at
10:00 p.m. ET/PT.
Bivol, age 27, of St. Petersburg Russia, risks his perfect record of 14
wins with no losses and 11 knockouts against the time-tested Pascal, who
turns 36 on October 28, has 33 wins, 20 by knockout, against five losses
and a draw.
Bivol is coming off a dominating 12-round decision victory over
crafty Isaac Chilemba of Malawi on August 4. Pascal is fresh from an
eighth round TKO over former UFC champion Steve Bosse at Place Bell
in Laval, Quebec on July 20.
Andrei Ryabinski of World of Boxing, Bivol’s promoter, said, “We

Patti LaBelle Returns to Tropicana Atlantic City in 2019
Legendary Patti LaBelle will bring her soulful voice to Tropicana
‘Atlantic City’s Tropicana Showroom for a live performance on Saturday,
February 16 at 8 p.m.
For more than 50 years, LaBelle’s strong and expressive voice has
left an indelible mark all over the world. This Philadelphia-born
entertainer captured her first hit in 1962, as lead singer of Patti LaBelle
and The BlueBelles. Later with Labelle and as a solo artist, she went on
to release numerous hit songs and albums and capture worldwide
acclaim.
A solo artist since the 1970s, Patti has created timeless songs that
have garnered numerous honors including GRAMMY Awards, American

Eight Teams to Participate in One-Day Quadruple-Header in AC
The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the Casino
Reinvestment Development Authority (CRDA) of Atlantic City
announced the field of teams for the first-ever Boardwalk Classic
presented by Citi, a newly developed college basketball showcase to be
held at Historic Boardwalk Hall on Saturday, December 15, 2018. It is
another signature event created by CRDA’s ongoing programming
alliance with IMG.
The one-day quadruple-header will feature Temple University
(American Athletic) vs. Davidson College (Atlantic 10); Iona College
(MAAC) vs. Princeton University (Ivy League); Penn State (Big Ten) vs
North Carolina State University (ACC); and Virginia Tech (ACC) vs

Internships for Undergraduate Students of Color
Participating museums include Philadelphia Museum of Art, New
Orleans Museum of Art, and Virginia Museum of Fine Arts
The Souls Grown Deep Foundation (SGDF) is pleased to announce a
new grant program providing undergraduate students of color paid
internships, allowing for the opportunity to develop professional
experience in art museums while being financially supported. The
program will launch in the spring 2019 semester, providing $5,000 per
intern, leading to full academic-year placements beginning in 2020
offering $10,000 per student. Students will apply for internships in
relevant curatorial, registrarial, conservation, education, and/or
administrative positions at art museums that have acquired art from the
Foundation. The first museums to participate in the program will be the
New Orleans Museum of Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art, and Virginia
Museum of Fine Arts, which are all working towards presentations of
their respective Souls Grown Deep Foundation acquisitions.
“The Souls Grown Deep Foundation’s internship program presents a
new way to support the original aspirations of our founder William S.
Arnett—that the artists we advocate for must be and are being
championed by others,” said Dr. Maxwell L. Anderson, president of the
Foundation. “In light of recent research by the Mellon Foundation on the
challenges of diversifying museum staff, we are especially proud to fill
the need of supporting undergraduate students to encourage the pursuit of
graduate education and/or a career in museums.”

alongside the curators, conservators, educators, and administrators
working directly with art recently acquired from the Foundation
‘collection and gain experience in museum work in general. Each
internship includes a trip to visit the Foundation’s collection in Atlanta
and the artists and communities it serves in the Southeast. Internships are
open to undergraduate students of color interested in professions related
to museums and visual arts.

Martin Luther King Birthday Celebration Kicks off January Schedule at

Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture
The Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History
and Culture will celebrate Martin Luther King Day with live music, a
film screening and interactive activities for guests and museum visitors.
Monday, Jan. 15, the museum will commemorate the birthday of Dr.
Martin Luther King Jr. with a community day: “The People’s Holiday-A
Celebration of the Life and Legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr.” Enjoy live
music inspired by King’s from The House Band in Heritage Hall, and
make a memorial button or flag based on objects in the museum’s
collections. There also will be supplies available to make scarfs, which
guests can keep or donate to those in need. The museum’s Center for
African American Media Arts (CAAMA) will screen the 1970
documentary, “King: A Filmed Record…Montgomery to Memphis” from
2–6 p.m. in the Oprah Winfrey Theater. The film features primary
footage including the 1955 Montgomery bus boycott and King’s
assassination in 1968. Celebrity narrators Harry Belafonte, Ruby Dee,
Ben Gazzara, Charlton Heston, James Earl Jones, Burt Lancaster, Paul
Newman, Anthony Quinn, Clarence Williams III, and Joanne Woodward
accompany original news footage that captured historic moments of

Wednesday, Jan. 17, from 7–9 p.m., Patrisse Cullors and Asha
Bandele, co-authors of When They Call You a Terrorist: A Black Lives
Matter Memoir, will discuss their book and the motivating factors that

award-winning journalist Michel Martin of National Public Radio.

Philadelphia Juneteenth Parade and Festival Moves to West Philadelphia

The 4th Annual Juneteenth Parade and Musicfest will be held in West
Philadelphia on Saturday, June 22, 2019.
The festivities will begin with an “Honor the Ancestors” breakfast at
the historic Belmont Mansion.
To add a distinct local flavor, the parade route will move through the
African American community starting at 52nd and Jefferson Streets,
south on 52nd Street and conclude with a festival at Malcolm X Park
(52nd and Pine). This will provide the opportunity to highlight local
businesses. In addition, a local route will bring people out of their homes
and ensure maximum crowd size.
