AIR BAG - DESCRIPTION

The vehicle is equipped with an electronic control system that governs the acivation of specific containment devices in the event of frontal or side
impact.

An electronic control unit, available on this version in two different configurations, manages the entire system. The connectors for the Air Bag control
unit (NAB) are different depending on whether or not the passenger Air Bag is present: this is necessary to prevent fitting an incorrect control unit
available from the Parts Dept. (foolproof logic).

In the most complete configuration the protection system includes:

l Dual activation stage driver''s front Air Bag;

l Single activation stage front passenger Air Bag;
l additional impact detection sensor on front crossmember (ECS);
l front belts with pretensioner and load limiter;
l seat belt not fastened sensor (driver''s side only).

The ECS “Early Crash Sensor” located on the front crossmember, helps the electronic control unit to anticipate the activation of the Air Bags more
quickly than a conventional system so that the Air Bag activation stage is completed before the occupant''s body begins to move towards the
steering wheel or dashboard. It also increases the safety margin for underbody impact where Air Bag activation is not required.

The electronic control unit is located on the centre tunnel and is secured rigidly to the body: in this way the deceleration sensors located inside the
unit are near the centre of gravity and detect the deceleration for the entire vehicle accurately.

The driver''s side front protection system features new Smart 2 activation software that is capable of automatically adapting the activation
parameters according to impact severity and whether the seat belts are being worn.

The driver''s air bag features two-stage activation: when the impact is of moderate severity, the electronic control unit controls only the first airbag
activation stage to avoid emitting unnecessary energy for the occupant''s protection.

Conversely, in the case of very severe impact, the control unit activates both stages almost simultaneously to absorb most of the kinetic energy from
the occupant''s body before it strikes the steering wheel or dashboard.

The Air Bag module is fitted in the centre of the steering wheel. it is fitted on a rocker plate that allows the horn to be operated. The plate houses a
metal container that contains the folded bag and the gas generation device that inflates the bag.

A clock spring allows the connecting cables for the Air Bag module to follow the rotation of the steering wheel without danger of breaking.

The passenger Air Bag is located on the dashboard, and is fastened directly to the vehicle crossmember by means of a special bracket.

The pretensioners are fitted to the buckles and then the seat to obtain an additional restraining function in conjunction with the seat structure.

The protective action of the belts is made more effective by the adoption of these pretensioners which, in the case of a violent impact, rewind the
seat belt by a few centimetres to ensure optimum adherence to the occupant''s body.

The pretensioners can only be used once and it is possible to tell that they have been activated by the retraction of the buckle downwards making it
impossible to operate the belt.

The seat belts are also equipped with a load limiter which makes it possible to adjust the force acting on one''s chest and shoulders during the
retaining action of the belts in the case of a frontal impact.

The vehicle is equipped with a S.B.R. (Seat Belt Reminder) system consisting of a buzzer that notifies the driver that their seat belt is unfastened
complemented by a flashing seat belt unfastened warning light in the instrument panel.

The control unit is equipped with an autodiagnostic function:

l it detects and stores faults;

l it recognises the various components and the fault type;
l it indicates the onset of faults by means of the special warning light.

The activation of the system following a particularly serious impact is memorized by the control unit.

When the system autodiagnostic function detects a fault or an impact is recorded, the control unit sends a signal, via the CAN, for the Air Bag fault
warning light located in the instrument panel.

The passenger Air Bag (if present) can be deactivated using the specific adjustments via the digital / multifunction display and using the "MODE",
"+" and "-" buttons on the left control panel.

The passenger Air Bag disabling function is activated via the setup menu in the instrument panel, not using the key! When it is deactivated the
warning light in the instrument panel comes on.

The system control unit supply lines are protected by a fuse in the junction unit under the dashboard.

AIR BAG - OPERATIONAL DESCRIPTION

The control unit for the Air Bag system M060 receives a supply controlled by the ignition (INT) at pin 2 of connector B from the line protected by
fuse F50 of the junction unit under the dashboard B002.

Pin 1 of connector B is connected to the Air Bag earth C050.

The sensor for the driver''s front Air Bag K175 is connected to pins 6 (reference earth) and 12 (signal) of connector B of the Air Bag control unit
M060.

Depending on the severity of the impact, the control unit activates:

l the driver''s Air Bag Q009 which, via the clock spring on the steering wheel D047 (pins 11-12 and 9-10), is connected to the Air Bag control
unit, respectively at pins 16-15 (first activation stage) and 13 and 14 (second activation stage) of connector B;
l the passenger Air Bag Q011, connected to pins 19 and 20 of connector B;
l the driver''s side front seat belt pretensioners Q020, connected to pins 19 and 20 of connector A, passenger side Q021, connected to pins 17
and 18 of connector A and, if a two-seater front bench is fitted, the centre seat belt pretensioner Q019, connected to pins 13 and 14 of the
same connector.

The Air Bag control unit M060 receives the signal coming from the driver''s seat belt switch incorporated in the pretensioner Q020 at pin 10 of
connector A. Connector A provides an earth signal for the switch from pin 5.

The control unit M060 is connected, via the CAN line (pins 7 and 8 of connector B), to the Body Computer M001 and to the instrument panel E050
for the management of the "passenger Air Bag disabled", "Air Bag failure" and "Seat belt not fastened" warning lights and the buzzer.

The "Mode", +" and " -" controls (pins 5 and 6) located in the left control panel H091 send analogue signals to the instrument panel E050 (pins 13
and 16). Pin 2 of H091 receives the reference earth from pin 8 of connector B of the Body Computer M001. This allows the deactivation of the
passenger Air Bag, via the special set up menu in the display, causing the warning light to come on.
