Understanding Children’s Right to Freedom

Freedom is a sacred and inalienable right that all human beings possess. It is the power to act
according to its will, while respecting the law and the rights of others.

What are the freedoms of the children?

Personal and collective liberties

• Personal liberties : They correspond to the liberties that all individuals possess. The most
fundamental personal freedoms are the freedom of speech, expression, movement, thought,
consciousness, religion and the right to a private life.

• Collective liberties : They correspond to liberties for groups of people: freedom of association,
peaceful meeting, collective labor and the right to strike.

These liberties are absolute but can be limited (restrictions to the liberties).

Freedom of the children

Children have rights and liberties like adults. But children are more fragile and vulnerable than
adults. So, until they become adults, the liberties of children are more restricted in order to ensure
their security and well-being.

Nevertheless, they have liberties which it is important to respect. It concerns mainly liberties of
“citizenship”; the freedom of speech, expression and association, and “spiritual” or “religious”
liberties; the freedom of thought, consciousness and religion.

The rights to liberty of opinion, expression and association of the children

Children have the right, as do the adults, to have an opinion, to express it and to meet in order to
share their point of view.

Liberty of opinion

Children have the right to have an opinion different from their parents. While taking into account
their age, as well as their degree of maturity and discernment, children have the right to have their
opinion considered. States, communities and parents have the duty to listen to the children and to
consider their opinions when the decisions concern them.

Liberty of expression

Every child has the right to express freely their opinion on all the questions which concern his/her
life. So a child should not be the victim of the pressure of an adult, who would try to force him/her
in order to influence them in their opinion or who would prevent them from expressing themselves
freely.

The freedom of expression for the children also involves their right to be informed. It is the right
of the children to know what happens and to access information which interests them. Then
children can comprehend current problems, inquire and build up their own opinion on topical
subjects.

Freedom of association

Like adults, children have the right to meet in order to consult and react on issues which directly
concern their rights and their well-being, but also on news headlines which interest them.

Thanks to these liberties, children have the right to participate in the life of their society. (See: The

The right of the children to liberty of thought, consciousness and religion

The children have the right, like the adults, to think freely and to adhere to the values, convictions
and the religion of their choice.

Freedom of thought

The freedom of thought is the right for every person to determine freely, in its spirit, its
conceptions and its intellectual and spontaneous representations.

The children are free to have thoughts which evolve and change according to their degree of
maturity and discernment.

Freedom of consciousness

The freedom of conscience is a freedom halfway between the liberties of thought, opinion and the
freedom of religion. This freedom, strictly connected to the ethical and philosophical convictions
of a person, is the assertion that all human beings have a consciousness and a reason. So, the
children are free to determine what will be the principles which will guide their existence.

Freedom of religion

The freedom of religion allows every person to have the religion or the conviction of their choice
and to show it freely. It is the right not to undergo constraint and oppression which would injure
their freedom of religion or other rights.

Children can freely determine the religion or the conviction of their choice, as soon as they reach a
sufficient level of discernment. A religion doesn’t have to be imposed to them.

In one of my child rights advocacy visits to secondary schools, I met the principal of a school who
clearly prohibited me from talking to his students about the rights they have as children. We had
an interesting discussion in which he gave some unsubstantial grounds against the enactment of
the Child’s Rights Act. One of the grounds he stated was that the Child’s Rights Act incites
rebellion amongst children against their parents and limits the amount of control parents have over
their children with particular reference to Sections 6, 7, 8, 9 of the Act. Keeping in mind that there
are other people with similar thoughts I would love to comment on this view.

The Child’s Rights Act, 2003 of Nigeria (CRA) represents the nationalization of the Child Rights
Convention (CRC) and according to sections 6, 7, 8, 9; a child has the right to freedom of
association and peaceful assembly; right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; right to
private and family life; right to freedom of movement respectively. At first glance, these rights
will be widely accepted and appreciated by children especially those who have strict parents while
on the other hand it will be widely frowned upon by parents who consider these rights as limiting
the amount of control they have over their children. The law respects the family unit and in the
quest to protect the rights and welfare of children it has no intention to incite rebellion in a family
or limit the amount of control parents have over their children. In this light it is important to
emphasize the fact that if you read these sections carefully you would realize that the law does not
just state the above rights for children. It further states that such rights are subject to the law and
should be exercised in accordance with the necessary guidance and direction of parents and
guardians and in the interest of the welfare and safety of a child. For example Section 9 of the
CRA 2003 deals with a child’s right to freedom of movement states:

“(1) Every child is entitled to freedom of movement subject to parental control which is not
harmful to the child.
(2) Nothing in subsection (1) of this section shall affect the right of a parent, and where applicable,
a legal guardian or other appropriate authority to exercise control over the movement of the child
in the interest of the education, safety and welfare of the child.”

What does this mean? This means that parents still have the necessary control they need over their
children, and children cannot use the above rights as an excuse or reason for disobeying their
parents. For example a child cannot leave the house and come back late at night without regard to
a curfew fixed by his/her parents for his/her own safety and welfare just because he/she has a right
to freedom of movement. The CRA will never uphold this argument.

Since rights hardly ever come without responsibilities, Section 19 of the CRA gives children
responsibilities such as respecting their parents, superiors, elders at all times, and contribute to the
moral well being of the society, just to mention a few. With such responsibilities it is very clear
that the Child’s Rights Act never intended to make children rebellious.

Those who think that there are no justifications for these rights really need to think otherwise. For
example, the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion means that it is not in the
interest of the child for parents to foist their ideas and religious idiosyncrasies on the child taking
into cognizance the ever-evolving choices which the child may make in the future. For example, in
Nigeria, there was a time when parents wanted their children to be doctors, engineers or lawyers in
order to fulfill their pride and probably be called “Mama Doctor”. Thus, they never listened to
their children or paid attention to any other profession they had a passion for. They would force
the idea of becoming a doctor into a child’s mind and some will never made it through medical
school because they had no passion for it. Others will go through medical school and still switch
to another profession afterwards, just because they didn't want to become a doctor. Some even
grow up hating their parents for that and this is not good. Though the Act recognizes that children
need to be guided in making certain choices, it encourages parents to have regards to the best
interest of such children in giving such directions.

A child’s right to freedom of movement means that children should not be restricted unnecessarily
from going to school, participating in meaningful outdoor activities, interacting with people within
their environment because this indirectly hinders a child’s development as education also involves
moving around and not just learning in classrooms.

I explained some of the above to the principal that day but he remained adamant and since it was
his school, I had to leave peacefully. All legislation have one form of criticism or the other but I
believe that the Child’s Rights Act 2003, Nigeria just like the Child Rights Convention plays a
great role in promoting the welfare, safety, best interest and protection of children.

children and some of them take an action by controlling their children’s life and also their
activities. This is not the best way for children because it makes they feel stress and it may lead
them to do crime and vandalism. So, children of today should be given freedom for their own
benefits.

own parents. Parent can admonish their children if they do any mistakes but do not stuck them to
do something that they like because they also should given a chances to overcome their own
mistakes. For me, parents can control their own child but make sure they can do something that
they want to do because parent cannot treat them as they do not know in anything. Just give them
chances to go along with their life and their hobbies or anything that can lead them to manage
their life.

Last but not least, parent should give their children freedom to choose their own friends because
this will help them how to communicate with others even in different races or gender. Children
have their personal possessions to make and choose friends as they know what they need in
friendship and parent need to monitor their children to avoid them to take a wrong way in their life
but not shackle their life. So, in this way children will feel that they have their own life and they
have a parent that always support them in whatever they do so the relationship between parent and
children will become more tide.

In a nut shell, children need their own freedom to make their own decision, do what they want and
even choose their own friends. Remember that success in not the key of happiness but happiness is
the true key off success. So, if children happy in what they do they will be successful in their life.

Kids should have more freedom Like i said kids should have a chance to be more responsible and
have more freedom. Most kids are really really nice and responsible but some are not because they

For a Good Reason I think because life is short and kids need to have the time to have freedom so
when they are grown up they know alot more about life and freedom im my opinion for example
young girls should be able to wear makeup and do alot of things in there life also boys should do
things that they want to do also

Yes! Children need to have freedom so they are ready to be alone and free when they are older.
Children are shown as minors to the world, which makes them unstable and not used to being put
into the real world. They need to be shown that you are free to to a lot of things, though there are a
few things off limits. Having freedom allows a kid to be happy and make their own choices, which
allows them not to be overwhelmed when they do leave the house. Yes it has pros and cons but it
is better for a child to be free, and allow them to make their own choices. We were all kids once
and you should know how it felt every time you stepped outside. You feel free. That's how all kids
should feel all day long.

Omg yes they do Child discrimination is a no. Back then those shit head hippies aka the geezers

Children are Immature. Children already given so much freedom and tolerance nowadays. But
there shouldn't be more for them. The simple reason is that they are not mature enough. Children
cannot justify things correctly. (That is why driving license is only for person 16 and above)

Children made decision based on what they like, not necessarily good for them. I give you an
analogy, if there are cheesecake and salad, children would most probably pick cheesecake,
because it is tasty, sweet, interesting but they don't know the harm it inflicts and they don't know
that salad is better.

Children get as much as they deserve Parents are the ones that are able to choose how much
freedom a child gets. When a parent decides that you get a lot it means that you are deserving us
that much. So if a child wants more freedoms then they have to prove to others that they can act
mature. No one wants to give freedoms to someone who doesn't know how to act correctly.

Spare the rod and spoil the child. Parents should set boundaries. Children do actually want
boundaries. They feel a lot safer when they have them. They want you to say, ‘you must not do
that’ because they like the feeling of control. The sense of living in a little world where they know
what is safe, What is right and what is wrong; a consistent world that’s not too complicated. If
everything is allowed it can be overwhelming. And unsafe. Children do not come into this world
knowing what is right for them. And parents don’t do their children any favours by letting them
get away with things. Remember, Encouraging discipline does not mean stifling what a child
wants.

Children needs guidance. I know it sucks to be controlled, But trust me, It is for the best. My
parents were strict on me when I was growing up but when I got to a certain point they allowed
me to do what I wanted. They trusted me; they knew I would stay out of trouble and act matured.
If you want more freedom, You got to earn it..

Do our children need more freedom?

As the ‘spare the rod, spoil the child’ philosophy grows ever more popular with the
parenting experts, are we in danger of dampening our children’s curiosity and need to
challenge authority?

Tough love is making a revival with TV parenting experts, from ‘Supernanny’ Jo


Frost to Little Angels’ Dr Tanya Byron, urging us to stop trying to be our children’s
friends, and start behaving like their parents again.

In a new wave of ‘naughty steps’ and ASBOs, we seem to be turning our back on
laissez-faire liberal parenting and embracing a more traditional approach to authority
and discipline. Indeed, it’s hard to ignore the message from TV shows and tabloids;
today’s children are out of control. But are kids today so different from how we were?
And if so, have we made them that way?

With their curriculum-regimented school days, homework and weekends packed with
‘improving’ activities, are we denying them the free weekends and summers of our
youth – when we were free to explore and experiment? By ensuring our children are
deferential to authority are we stunting their individuality?

There’s a growing unease that, in the new regimen of rules and discipline, children are
losing the freedom they need to express their personalities and learn for themselves
what is right and wrong. How can we expect our children to become tomorrow’s
bright young things if we don’t allow them the space today to grow and learn?
‘Parents should set boundaries’

Children do actually want boundaries. They feel a lot safer when they have them.
They want you to say, ‘you must not do that’. They like the feeling of control. The
sense of living in a little world where they know what is safe, what is right and what
is wrong; a consistent world that’s not too complicated. If everything is permissible it
can be overwhelming. It’s also unsafe. Children don’t come into this world knowing
what is right for them. And parents don’t do their children any favours by letting them
get away with things. For the first few years you are training your children – outlining
behaviours and setting them structures.

Encouraging discipline doesn’t mean stifling a child’s free will. Children need to be
able to have opinions and to express their individuality. I tell parents and teachers we
can encourage this by giving them simple choices from a very early age. ‘This drink
or that?’ ‘These shorts or those?’ It’s a limited freedom that lets them explore their
free will. Later, you will attach consequences to these choices – if you make the
wrong choice, then there is a price to be paid. If you choose to throw your food on the
floor you don’t get your pudding. The choice is still theirs, but the consequence
informs their behaviour. After all, this is what they will encounter out in the real
world. Rules, responsibility and consequences.

Over the past 20 years there has been an anti-liberal backlash, which blames
everything that’s wrong – from teenage pregnancy to the rise in crime – on the 1960s
and the liberal rejection of authority. This kind of rigid, nannying, authoritarian
thinking is on the rise, particularly in the US. There’s a sense that we have been far
too liberal. The feeling seems to be that if we are to save Western society, we need to
reinstate the traditional parenting and religious schools that tended to dominate in the
1960s.

I published a book earlier this year arguing against this, and in favour of freedom of
thought. Not freedom of action, but freedom of expression. No school, regime or
authority should be encouraging children to unquestioningly accept. You repeatedly
hear myths, for example that the kind of education where you encourage children to
think and question just invites anarchy and indiscipline in the classroom. There is no
case for it. In fact, there is far more evidence to suggest that it is not a terribly healthy
thing for a society to actively encourage people to be deferential to authority. I believe
that reason has a vital role to play in education and a healthy dollop of critical thought
should be included in any child’s moral upbringing. But that suggestion can upset
people. They are not happy about encouraging young people to think and criticise
their fundamental moral and religious convictions. It’s even more important in today’s
society that we make sure young people are raised to think and question.

Kids answer essay question: What does freedom mean to me?

5th grade class

"We hold these truths to be self-evident; that all men are created equal, that they are
endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life,
liberty and the pursuit of happiness." This is taken from the Declaration of
Independence and was written by the brave men who created our country 231 years
ago. They thought freedom was worth fighting and dying for.

I think of all the wars our country has fought, and still is fighting, so we can have the
wonderful gift of freedom. There have been many brave women and men who have
risked their lives so we can live the way we want to in the United States. We still have
women and men fighting for our freedom today.

Some of my relatives have fought in different wars. My great uncle, Mel, my grandpa,
and my mom's cousin, Lee, fought to defend our great country, knowing that they
could be killed.

Freedom means to be able to vote for whoever you want to be in office, freedom of
the press, freedom of religion, the right to a fair trial, and many other freedoms that
we take for granted.

To get the freedoms that we so enjoy, Americans have fought bravely and many have
lost their lives. Our veterans have fought to keep our country free and we should all
be thankful for that. I am glad that we honor our veterans and I am proud to be an
American!

What does freedom mean to me? Freedom means to have the right to do and say what
you like. This is how the dictionary explains freedom. Pope John Paul II said that
"Every generation of Americans needs to know that freedom consists not in doing
what we like, but having the right to do what we ought."

I think freedom is an amazing thing because at 11 years old, I'm able to have an
education, learn to play the French horn, and learn how to sing in a choir.

Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, we have police, doctors, firemen and
women to help us when we need it. I don't have to worry about a war in Wadena.

We have soldiers fighting for our freedom. Their courage allows me to think of things
I'd like to do, like care for my lambs, cats, dogs, read or draw. That's what freedom
means to me.

What freedom means to me is not being judged by what I do and what I say. Also I
would like to say thanks to the veterans that fought for my freedom.

To me, having freedom is enough to make me happy because a lot of people in other
countries don't have the freedom we take for granted. I think if people realized how
lucky they are they would have more respect for the veterans and more support for
them. So think for a moment, are you unlucky or are you just feeling bad for yourself,
think about the kids and adults who don't have freedom.

So support the veterans who have risked their lives and fought for your freedom every
day.

To me, freedom means the right to choose. I can choose my friends, my actions, my
life.

I can decide what I want to be when I grow up or where I might want to live. If all of
those brave men and women hadn't fought for us in war, who knows where America

Freedom is something many, many people take for granted, even me. In some
countries, people dream about freedom. They wish for it, too.

That's why we should thank all the brave men and women who've risked their lives
and lost their lives, because without them, freedom would only be a dream for us, too,
and not the reality it is today. So thank you to all who have seen war. Because of you,
I have freedom, my family has freedom, and the country has freedom.

country because veterans fought for my freedom and independence in the Revolu-

Because of them we live in a country that is free. We can choose where we want to
learn our own religion. We can express our feelings and not get in trouble for it. If we
didn't have these freedoms, what do you think America would be like? What if we
didn't have courageous people to fight for us like in World Wars I and II? Probably
half of our population would be wiped out.

That means many families would be afraid to leave their homes in case they got hurt
or even killed. Every night we would lay awake, wondering if this would be our last
night. We don't have to worry, though. We have troops fighting for us at this very
moment in Iraq. If someone said, "Who cares about freedom," what would you say?
Would you go along with that person, or would you be the one to stand above the
crowd and say, "I care about freedom, because of freedom, we can do what we want
each day living freely, with no worries." Think about it. Freedom is a very special gift
in our country that not many countries have. We are lucky to be free. Thanks to all the
veterans and troops who made the ultimate sacrifice. America truly is the land of the
free.

What did we fight for in Korea? Or the World Wars? What is worth the lives and
limbs lost in these wars? What makes the USA different from other nations, so
appealing to people of other lands that they come by the millions? Why do we choose
how to live unlike other countries? The answer is freedom.

Freedom is the ability to make choices and to carry them out, as long as they show no
unjust, unnecessary or unreasonable limits of others' freedom. Without freedom, there
would be no afternoon or evening activities. In other countries, religion is discouraged
or even forbidden, so there is no or little amount of freedom of religion. There's also
freedom of assembly, press, speech and economic freedom, which is to be able to
profit from land in America. Because we have freedom, we can speak freely and not
be punished.

The passengers of Flight 93 which crashed on Sept. 11 is an example of the meaning


of freedom. The brave Americans of Flight 93 and other victims of 9-11 paid the
ultimate price for freedom, so we should pay them respect and gratitude. True
freedom means giving as well as receiving, and the price is high.

A person's race, gender or physical limitations don't matter because we are all equal,
so we receive the same amount of freedom. Sometimes we take freedom for granted,
and don't think of all the little things that we get to enjoy because we are free. When
you stop and think about how life would be without it, it makes you very thankful to
live here and enjoy the promise of freedom. This is what freedom means to me..

Should Parents Give Children Freedom? Essay

“Parents must learn to raise their sons and daughters on a good path, and they have
responsibility for the behaviors of the kids “.This is speech from Arabic culture. The
priority for parents is to educate and discipline their children. Children need some
freedom to build their self-confidence that parents see their children as their future
.Although some people give more freedom to their children and they think that their
decisions are in correct direction; others think that more freedom has negative
influences on children’s behavior. It seems to me that more liberty has the negative
influences on the ethics of the children for several reasons.

Society has the largest impacts on the children manners .if the parents give to their
children the make connection with society without control ,the children will make
relations with anyone in the community .Basically, children don’t have any
experiences in the their life’s and this relationships toward to bad situation .For
example, in my country , some research have taken for many years and studied the
sources of the drugs crime. Consequently, the psychological people found that was the
highest percent of the crimes with children who lived in the same area and these
crimes related the children who took the drugs. So, these results show that the society
has negative feedbacks on the susceptibilities of the children. An old Arabic history
said that parents should choose the appropriate accompanies for their children. On the
other hand, some people think that the children must have good connections with the
community to build their experiences and they can educate from the society how to
deal with other people .

Children will spend more money if parents give more independence for them.
Nowadays, children need more money for their lives in the schools and the colleges
and parents have to help and give their children what they need from money.
However, parent should follow and hold accountable their children for this money. In
addition to giving more money for the children has unfavorable effects on the feeling
of children. For example, in the high schools, students have more money and can buy
anything, such as drugs.

Moreover, more money will create the big problems between the poor and rich people
in the school .For example, in my country , rich children bring expansive food like
apple and others ,but the poor children cannot bring any food .So, in some countries
,the governments have made the good laws that there is no difference between the
students and the rich people must not bring any money from their houses because they
can take the breakfast from the schools. As a result for giving more money for the
children won’t be dependent on their lives and they don’t care about the money. In the
contract, some people think that they must subsidy their children by giving to them
more money and don’t ask people to borrow from money.

By giving more freedom to the children, parents cannot control and discipline their
children and parents will lose the good connections if they give more deliverance to
their children .So, children don’t obey their parents and they will take their opinions
by themselves .For example , nowadays, the parents cannot control their children
because the connections between the children and the parents are very weak .Even
though the children and the parents live in certain place, they don’t have any
connection between them .Consequently , the relationship between them become
weakly. Because , children will refuse any order from their parents and do not obey
them at all .

To sum up, the freedom for the children is very substantial .However, more freedom
give negative results for the children’s behavior. In my opinion , the parents shouldn’t
give more liberty to children for many reasons ,such as, the society affects , influences
of spending money and the parent will lose their dignity behind their children.
