Golfín sale para visitar a su hermano en las minas de Socartes.

Después de mucho caminar, se da cuenta que estaba

perdido. Allí conoce a Pablo un joven ciego que le sirve de guía, luego de caminar un rato se encuentran con
Marianela, quien es la guía de Pablo, ella guía a Golfín hasta las oficinas.

Golfín pregunto a la Nela sobre su vida así se entera de que Nela es huérfana. Ella misma le relata las desventuras
que pueblan su pasado y su presente. Nela explica a Golfín cuál es el origen de su nombre; le habla de Canela, su
madre. Golfín descubre que es sólo el joven Pablo el que muestra afecto hacía ella.

Nela tiene únicamente por morada un rincón de la casa de los Centeno, ellos la maltratan como una consecuencia de
la indiferencia y el maltrato que los propios hijos del matrimonio Centeno reciben. El hijo menor Celipín era el único
con aspiraciones más allá del trabajo en la mina, y el único con quien Nela se relaciona. Su relación se estrecha cada
vez más a partir de la complicidad de ella en los planes secretos de Celipín para estudiar, ella le cede el dinero que la
gente le obsequia por los favores recibidos por parte de ella.

Nela, el lazarillo de Pablo, sale con él a caminar por los campos.

Nela, Pablo y el perro Choto caminan hacia el bosque, Pablo trae a Nela un dulce, un chocolate, unas nueces. Nela
explica la dicotomía de su vida: de día anda feliz con el pero de noche no. En el camino, ella describe los detalles del
campo y le explica sus supersticiones como aquello de que las estrellas son almas salvas que bajan del cielo a revelar
secretos a los humanos.

Nela y Pablo llegan a la entrada del bosque, de donde se puede ver un pedazo del mar a la distancia. Se sientan
juntos para descansar entre unos nogales, y Pablo cuenta a Nela de los libros de historia y ciencia que su padre le leía
por las noches. la última ‘Las Mil y una Noches’ ,el confiesa a Nela que es una mujer modesta, cariñosa, hermosa
como los ángeles ella le dice en la realidad es una mujer sencilla y fea. Pablo admite que está enamorado de ella.
Después, la pareja regresa a casa.

Pablo comparte con Nela la esperanza de ver. Pablo traduce su esperanza en la concreción del anhelo por ver a su
amada Nela. Por su parte, Nela comparte la dicha de Pablo por volver a ver, sin embargo en su corazón crece la
tristeza de que pablo la viera. Él se quedó dormido en el regazo de Nela durante su paseo, mientras tanto ella creía
escuchar la voz de su madre que provenía del fondo de la Trascava...

El señor Golfín sugiere que podrían adoptar a Nela. Después de un incidente Nela se espina un pie y Golfín la lleva en
hombros de regreso a casa.

Después del paseo, la familia Golfín en compañía de Nela se dirige a casa de Don Francisco quien los recibe con un
vaso de leche recién ordeñada. De vuelta en casa de los Centeno, Nela entrega a Celipín los dos duros que le dio
Golfín para que se comprara zapatos. Como de costumbre Nela y Celipín hablan un poco antes de dormir sobre los
planes de éste para irse de casa y estudiar.

La Nela no creé en Dios, pero si en la Virgen María, quien personifica la belleza ideal en forma humana. Nela
pregunta a la Virgen por qué la hizo tan fea y le pide que la haga hermosa para que Pablo no la encuentre fea. Ella
quiere a Pablo, pero desea que nunca abra los ojos para mirarla.

Al llegar la mañana, Nela se ve sorprendida por la aparición de la Virgen, creyó verla en persona a lo que quedó
petrificada. Luego, se da cuenta de que se trata de Florentina, la prima de Pablo, quien había venido en compañía de
su padre para ultimar los detalles de la boda que tienen planeado sus padres para ella y Pablo.

Pablo y Nela van a mostrar a Florentina las minas. Florentina decide que va tener a Nela como su amiga, que le va a
socorrer, que le enseñará a ser una mujer útil y hogareña. Florentina se aleja un poco, y Pablo aprovecha para decir a
Nela que su prima le resulta una mujer hermosa, mientras crecen las preocupaciones de Nela.
Golfín realiza la cirugía de Pablo sin saber cuáles serán los resultados. La noticia del éxito de la operación de Pablo
llega por todo el pueblo, pero Nela evita ir a la casa de los Penáguilas, orando a la Virgen y pensando que Dios quiere
que ella sufra. Llegando a casa, se encuentra con Florentina, que quiere llevarla a ver a Pablo.

Nela sigue vagando en el campo, pero por las noches se acerca a la casa de los Penáguilas sin que nadie lo note.
Regresa al bosque y encuentra a Celipín en el camino. Él ha salido de la casa y quiere escaparse con Nela. Ella
rechaza la idea y Celipín se despide de ella. Choto, el perro de Pablo, descubre a Nela vagando. Golfín sorprende a
Marianela justo a tiempo antes de quitarse la vida y la exhorta a que abra su corazón ante él, única persona
dispuesta a preocuparse por los asuntos que aquejan su corazón.

Al principio Pablo tiene miedo de su nuevo mundo, pero poco a poco le agradece y está inundado con la hermosura
a su alrededor. Ve primero a Florentina, equivocado, piensa que es Nela. Pablo no puede creer que su prima sea tan
hermosa, y le ruega que se quede con él mientras se recupera. Pablo confiesa a su prima que quiere a Nela, y pide a
Florentina la traiga ante él. Florentina encuentra a Nela, pero ésta se escapa.

La mañana en que Nela despertó en la habitación de Florentina, Golfín que se encontraba allí, preocupado por el
estado de Nela, le describe a Florentina la desventurada vida que ha tenido que llevar aquella por la ausencia de un
alma que pueda ocuparse del mínimo cuidado de ella. Luego Pablo se da cuenta de que la Nela estaba en aquella
habitación y al mirarla siente pen por ella. Pablo clava su mirada sobre ella, y ésta al sentir el peso de la mirada de
Pablo comienza su descenso a las profundidades de la muerte. Golfín, ante la frustración e impotencia de no poder
salvarla, termina por exclamar que ¡Nela ha muerto de amor...!
