Unit Title: Real Life Math: Quadratic & Exponential Functions Name: Louis Oakley
Content Area: Algebra I/Math I Grade Level: 9-10
CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):
Seeing Structure in Expressions: A-SSE
 Write expressions in equivalent forms to solve problems. [Quadratic and exponential]
3. Choose and produce an equivalent form of an expression to reveal and explain properties of the quantity represented by the
expression.
a) Factor a quadratic expression to reveal the zeros of the function it defines.
b) Complete the square in a quadratic expression to reveal the maximum or minimum value of the function it defines.
c) Use the properties of exponents to transform expressions for exponential functions. For example, the expr ession 1.15t can
be rewritten as (1.151/12) 12t ≈ 1.01212t to reveal the approximate equivalent monthly interest rate if the annual rate is
15%.
Big Ideas/Unit Goals:
The goal of this unit is for students to understand the quadratic functions, exponential functions and the ways we can manipulate each expression
to convey different ideas about the function. Students also need to be able to provide the reasoning used to justify the alge braic manipulation of
each process. Students will be required to be able to identify and solve quadratic equations and exponential problems and provide the proper
justification for their algebraic process.
In what real-life scenarios are quadratic functions and how to solve them useful?
Where did the idea of completing the square come from and how was it developed?
Why algebraically does completing the square work?
Unit Summary:
In this Unit, students will be asked to not only develop the tools necessary to “complete the square”, factor and solve quadr atic and exponential
equations, but will also be asked to develop an awareness of why and how these concepts are rational. Students will first be shown the
procedures required to comprehend and solve quadratic and exponential problems. Students will then be presented with an in -depth look at the
idea of "completing the square". Students will be asked to explore quadratic equations in a number of different ways such as algebraically and
graphically and use the techniques developed in this unit to approach these problems. Students will also be requested to reco gnize, comprehend,
and solve real-life word problems involving quadratic and exponential equations. By the end of this Unit, students will be divided into groups and
create their own real-life word problem about quadratic and/ or exponential equations and use the techniques developed throughout this Unit to
explain and solve their own word problem.
