Aims of lesson:
 to revise and reinforce vocabulary concerning different types of jobs, skills and
qualities, places of work
 to allow Ss to practice speaking spontaneously and fluently about something that may
provoke the use of words and phrases they have learnt recently
 to allow Ss to practise listening for specific information
 to allow Ss to talk about how they choose a career
 to develop Ss' speaking and reading skills
 to develop Ss' ability to use language in real life situations
STAGES OF THE LESSON:

Activity 1: Checking Homework

Aim: to check students’ work

Method: conversation
Timing: 5’
Procedure:
Teacher's activity: T enters the classroom, greets the Ss, and asks them how they are,
if there is anybody absent. T reminds the task for the day and asks them to read their
homework. T corrects the mistakes, if any.
Student’s activity: Ss answer the T’s questions and read their homework.
Class management: whole-class activity
Skills: speaking, reading

Activity 2: Warm Up

Aim: - to warm students up and to create a positive attitude

-to develop Ss' ability to use language in real life situations

Methods: group discussion

Timing: 4’
Procedure:
Teacher’s activity: T asks Ss to look at the title of the new lesson and say what they
think it means. T also asks Ss to look at the pictures from page 45 and explain where
each person works.
Students’ activity: Ss look at the title and the pictures and express their own opinions.
Ss talk about different jobs and about the places where people work.

Activity 3: Presentation of the new lesson

Aim: - to create expectation and arouse the students’ interest in the topic
- to allow Ss to practice speaking spontaneously and fluently about something that
may provoke the use of words and phrases they have been learning recently
Methods: practical exercises
Timing: 5’
Procedure:
Teacher’s activity: T asks Ss to look at exercise 2, page 45. Students are asked to talk
about each job, about the qualifications people need to have these jobs, about career
prospects, perks and bonuses.
Students’ activity: Ss read the words and expressions and use them to describe each
job.

Activity 4: Focus on Practice

I. Aim: to allow Ss to practise listening for specific information

Methods: conversation
Timing: 5’
Procedure:
Teacher’s activity: T tells Ss that they are going to listen to some people talking about
their jobs. T asks the Ss to match the speakers with their jobs.
Students’ activity: Ss listen to the discussion and match the speakers with their jobs.

II. Aim: to allow Ss to talk about how they choose a career

Methods: example, conversation

Timing: 5’
Procedure:
a. Teacher’s activity: T asks Ss to talk about how a person can help or not in choosing a
career and which are the most important things when they choose a career.
b. Student’s activity: Ss look at the list of people and express their opinions about how
they can be helped in their careers and what is important when deciding on a career.

III. Aims: to allow Ss to talk about how people choose a career

o to develop Ss' speaking and reading skills

Methods: skimming, reading, group discussion

Timing: 20’
Procedure:
a. Teacher’s activity: T tells Ss that they will read a text about how people choose a
career and asks Ss to look at the title and at the headings and to tell what they think
the article will be about.
Student’s activity: Ss look at the title and at the headings and they predict what the
article will be about.

b. Teacher’s activity: T asks Ss to read the article and match the headings with the
paragraphs. T tells the Ss that there is one extra heading that shoud not be used.
Students’ activity: Ss read the article and match the headings with the paragraphs.

c. Teacher’s activity:T asks Ss to match the words from exercise 4c, page 47.
Students’ activity: Ss match the words.

d. Teacher’s activity: T asks Ss to read the phrases from exercise 5, page 47 and to
explain them.
Student’s activity: Ss read the phrases and explain them.

e. Teacher’s activity: T asks Ss to answer the questions from exercise 7, page 47. Ss
are also asked to talk about their future careers.
Students’ activity: Ss express their own opinions.

Activity 5: Evaluation and homework assignment

Aim: - to evaluate students’ work;

-to assign students’ homework

Procedure:
Teacher grades some students. Students are assigned to write a 200 words essay paraphrasing
the following “I’d rather be a happy dustman than an unhappy millionaire”, “It doesn’t matter what
job you do. It’s how you do it"
