“HAZARD MITIGATION PLAN FOR CHILDREN”
1.1 BACKGROUND
Mitigation simply means actions that reduce the potential for negative impacts
from future disasters. That is, mitigation actions reduce future damages, losses and
casualties.
Effective hazard mitigation planning will help the District deal with natural and
manmade hazards realistically and rationally. That is, to help identify specific locations
within the District where the level of risk from one or more hazards may be
unacceptably high and then finding cost effective ways to reduce such risk. Mitigation
planning strikes a pragmatic middle ground between unwisely ignoring the potential
for major hazard events on one hand and unnecessarily overreacting to the potential for
disasters on the other hand.
One of the country that has high chances of natural disaster occurrence is
Malaysia. That’s the reason why the community need to understand the process of
hazard mitigation. In a lot of cases of natural disaster, the victims are often children.
Because children are the most vulnerable and has little knowledge about hazard
mitigation. So we made the program with the theme of teaching hazard mitigation plan
for children.

Children in SK tangok,Bachok from 4th grade to 5th grade. There are 62 students
who participated in this program.
1.5 ACTIVITIES
This program consists of 4 parts. Part 1 is explaining about hazard mitigation with
power point. Part 2 is watching a short animated video regarding hazard mitigation.
Part 3 is for students to answer questionnaire. And part 4 is handing out brochure.
Through this program we hope that the children will be able to understand the
process of hazard mitigation and will be able to apply hazard mitigation plan in real
life.

• From the questionnaire, the average score is 80. seeing that the score is quite
high, we can conclude that the students have understand the topic.
1.11 DISCUSSION
However,if we see the students score table,there are six students who got score
lower than 70. Most of them couldn’t answer the part B. We think the problem is the
time, since the questionnaire is the last activity, the time left is not enough for the
students to carefully choose the right answer.
