The Evolution of
Petrotrin
In those early days, the oil industry in Trinidad and Tobago was hardly
as sophisticated as it is today. The following are some simple facts,
tracing our development and that of our energy sector through the years.

• The ‘Greenstreet’ cracking plant was installed at PAP on the hill, almost

• The Dubbs Cracking Process, offered by the Universal Oil Products

1928-1929
• The old refinery at Pointe-a-Pierre is upgraded with the construction of
the Nos. 3 and 4 Topping Plants. Three modern distillation Units were also
constructed. This led to a new refinery on the other side of the Southern
Main Road away from the sea. An old coconut estate, which ran alongside
the Bon Aventure Road leading from the Southern Main Road towards the
8 village of Gasparillo, was cleared to make way for the new refinery. 9

formed Trinidad Northern Areas to look for oil in new areas outside the
1931-32 Southern Basin.
• The La Brea refinery was extended by the addition of a 25,000 bbl crude oil

• The La Brea refinery was further extended when a crude still is added. • Labour unrest and an industry wide strike by oilfield workers led by Tubal

1939
• The D’Arcy Exploration Company (renamed British Petroleum in 1954)
joined UBOT and TLL as an equal partner in TNA.
• The remaining part of the thermal reformer of the old wartime Project
1234 was converted into another topping plant- No. 7 Topping Unit. When
the plant came on stream in 1959, the total refining capacity was revised
upwards to 135,000 bpd.
1957
• Textrin took over as operator for the offshore drilling at Point Fortin,
previously handled by TNA.
For close to a century predecessor oil companies have supported sport in Trinidad and
Tobago. These sporting events include the well known Palo Seco Games, which have been
convened over the years at the Palo Seco Velodrome. It also includes the Southern Games,
which have been held for many years at Guaracara Park.
