Section A
Key Terms:
Images: This refers to everything within the mise-en-scene including costume, setting, props, colour,
lighting, facial expression, and body language.
Layout and design: This refers to the way the elements in the image have been organised. You might
comment on the camera shot or angle selected, the position of the ‘hero’ in the frame, the position
of the hero in relation to other elements in the frame, and the focus of the shot.
Text: This refers to any written codes you can see. This could include fonts used, tone and register,
as well as any language features such as alliteration, emotive language, rhetorical questions, simile,
metaphor, hyperbole, repetition, sarcasm, intertextuality, and colloquialism.
Activity 1: You are going to begin in your core group to whom you will feedback your research findings. You
are going to be responsible for analysing one aspect of the selected advert e.g. image, layout, or text. You
will have 20 minutes to gather as much information as possible in your research group. You will then go
back to your core group and feedback what you found out.
Use the grids below to write your own research notes as well as taking notes from other people in your
core group.
