MSED ELEMENTARY PORTFOLIO PROJECT 22

Section Three: Teacher Candidate Artifacts

Introduction

In this section I will provide pedagogical evidence that supports the skills and knowledge

that I will need to teach in an elementary classroom. I will make connections to best teaching

practices, theories, and theorists and connections to curriculum and professional standards. I will

present instructional material to demonstrate that I have achieved the project goals. The materials

I will present in this section will show how well I have mastered areas of instructional

competencies of knowledge and skill, and attitudes that I have achieved as a result of my teacher

education program at Medaille. My artifact choices will also showcase my teaching

effectiveness, ability, and readiness to be a caring educator.

Artifacts & Rationales

Artifact #1: Weebly Teacher Website

My first artifact is the website I created for my future classroom. This website includes

my contact information, information about me, classroom rules, parent and student resources and

much more. I believe that a classroom website can be an incredibly helpful teaching tool. A

classroom website is a great way for teachers to distribute classroom information to parents. It

can also increase learning experiences and encourage student and parent participation.

I included this artifact in my portfolio because I believe that this website shows potential

employers, parents, and students a glimpse into my future classroom. While creating this website

I learned a lot about technology. There are many different tools and applications that I used to

create my classroom website. Some examples of the tools and applications that I used include: a

ChatterKid video which includes a welcome message to the students, a google form survey

which students could take so that I could get to know the students better, a document that
MSED ELEMENTARY PORTFOLIO PROJECT 23

includes a review on many different educational applications that students can use to enhance

their learning, and some virtual field trip videos and links for students to learn and discover

places all around the world. I believe that this artifact showcases that a classroom website helps

to build digital presence. I also believe that it demonstrates my web design skills and

technological abilities as an educator.

I believe that this artifact shows evidence that I am prepared for a career in education

because it displays how I can use technology in engaging and meaningful ways for students and

parents. I believe the including many different types of resources and information on my

classroom website can help to expand the borders of my classroom beyond the school walls. This

website not only showcases that I am capable of making a home-school connection, but also

showcases that I can provide many student and parent resources and applications that can be

used to engage students, and promote communication.

The curriculum and professional standards that were used include:

 ISTE Standards for Students 2. Digital Citizen: Students recognize the rights,

responsibilities and opportunities of living, learning and working in an

interconnected digital world, and they act and model in ways that are safe, legal

and ethical.

 ISTE Standards for Teachers 2c. Communicate relevant information and ideas

effectively to students, parents, and peers using a variety of digital age media

and formats.

 New York Code of Ethics for Educators - Principle 5: Educators collaborate with

parents and community, building trust and respecting confidentiality. Educators

partner with parents and other members of the community to enhance school

programs and to promote student learning. They also recognize how cultural and

linguistic heritage, gender, family and community shape experience and learning.

Educators respect the private nature of the special knowledge they have about

students and their families and use that knowledge only in the students’ best

interests. They advocate for fair opportunity for all children.

Artifact #2: Literacy Lesson Plan

My second artifact is a literacy lesson plan that was developed for a third grade

classroom which included ELA standards that required students to write opinion pieces on topics

or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons. This lesson was created to show students how

opinion writers structure their persuasive letters in order to convince their reader to make a

change. In this lesson students complete a graphic organizer that expresses their opinion with one

reason and one example. The graphic organizer will help the students build a persuasive letter to

convince the Principal to allow bubble gum in the classroom for one day.

I included this artifact in my portfolio because I believe that it shows my creativity and

ability to produce lesson plans that my students would be interested and engaged in. This artifact

shows my ability to plan for a variety of different learning styles. I also included this artifact

because prospective employers will want to see proof that I am capable of preparing engaging

lesson plans. I believe that this lesson plan will give potential employers a visual of how I would

teach a literacy lesson plan.

I believe that well-designed and planned instruction helps students to successfully

advance their capability. In order to provide deeper meaning and give student’s better

understanding of the content, lessons should maximize the learner’s ability to interact with each

other through discussion, collaboration and feedback. According to Vygotsky, he believes

students learn through our interactions and communications with others. (Neff n.d.) Throughout

this lesson plan students interact with the teacher through discussion and students collaborate at

the end to share their ideas.

The curriculum and professional standards that were used are:

MSED ELEMENTARY PORTFOLIO PROJECT 41

 CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.3.1: Write opinion pieces on topics or texts,

supporting a point of view with reasons.

 New York State Code of Ethics for Educators - Principle 1: Educators nurture the

intellectual, physical, emotional, social, and civic potential of each student.

Educators promote growth in all students through the integration of intellectual,

physical, emotional, social and civic learning. They respect the inherent dignity

and worth of each individual. Educators help students to value their own identity,

learn more about their cultural heritage, and practice social and civic

responsibilities. They help students to reflect on their own learning and connect it

to their life experience. They engage students in activities that encourage diverse

approaches and solutions to issues, while providing a range of ways for students

to demonstrate their abilities and learning. They foster the development of

students who can analyze, synthesize, evaluate and communicate information

effectively.

 InTASC Teaching Standards – Standard 1b: The candidate creates

developmentally appropriate instruction that takes into account individual

learners’ strengths, interests, and needs that enables each learner to advance and

accelerate his/her learning. Standard 2a: The candidate designs, adapts, and

delivers instruction to address each student’s diverse learning strengths and needs

and creates opportunities for students to demonstrate their learning in different

ways. Standard 3d: The candidate manages the learning environment to actively

and equitably engage learners by organizing, allocating, and coordinating the

resources of time, space and learners’ attention. Standard 6a: The candidate

Artifact #3: Author Study

My third artifact is an Author Study I created using SMART notebook. I am also

including the professional development certificate that I earned while creating this author study.

This Author Study was created on the author Doreen Cronin. I believe that as long as teachers

are trained properly and students are aware of how to use the SMART board, then SMART

boards can be a highly effective tool in engaging and motivating student learning. I believe that

SMART boards not only enhance the way teachers teach but also enhance the way students

learn.

I included this artifact in my portfolio because I believe this Author Study shows that I

have the ability and creativity to use the SMART board to enhance my lessons. This will make

differentiated learning much easier because I will be able to accommodate different learning

styles. I also included this artifact in my portfolio because the world becomes more dependent on

technology every single day. I believe that every teacher should be incorporating some form of

technology into every lesson that they teach. I included the certificate for SMART Notebook 17

Beginner & Intermediate Training because I believe that professional development enables

educators to develop the knowledge and skills they need to address student’s learning challenges.

This artifact shows that I am prepared for a career in education because it highlights my

ability to bring technology into the classroom in an engaging and creative way. Being able to

integrate technology into the classroom and use it to teach lessons is critical for today’s

educators. I believe that this artifact will show potential employers that by incorporating the

SMART board into my lessons, I will be able to engage my students in a fun and exciting way.

The curriculum and professional standards that were used are:

MSED ELEMENTARY PORTFOLIO PROJECT 51

 Common Core Social Studies - Civic Ideals and Practices 2.3 The United States is

founded on the principles of democracy, and these principles are reflected in all types of

communities. 2.3c The process of holding elections and voting is an example of

democracy in action in schools, communities, New York State, and the nation. Students

will learn about the process of voting and what opportunities adults in the community

have for participation. Students will participate in voting within the classroom and in

school, as appropriate. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.1.1 Demonstrate command of the

conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking. Produce,

 New York Code of Ethics for Educators - Principle 2: Educators create, support, and

maintain challenging learning environments for all. Educators apply their professional

knowledge to promote student learning. They know the curriculum and utilize a range of

strategies and assessments to address differences. Educators develop and implement

programs based upon a strong understanding of human development and learning theory.

They support a challenging learning environment. They advocate for necessary resources

to teach to higher levels of learning. They establish and maintain clear standards of

behavior and civility. Educators are role models, displaying the habits of mind and work

necessary to develop and apply knowledge while simultaneously displaying a curiosity

and enthusiasm for learning. They invite students to become active, inquisitive, and

discerning individuals who reflect upon and monitor their own learning. Principle 3:

Educators commit to their own learning in order to develop their practice. Educators
MSED ELEMENTARY PORTFOLIO PROJECT 52

recognize that professional knowledge and development are the foundations of their

practice. They know their subject matter, and they understand how students learn.

Educators respect the reciprocal nature of learning between educators and students. They
