Electrical Power Supply


Before working on the electrical connections, all of the electrical power lines to the equipment must
be isolated. All the electrical cables and signal cables must be connected exactly as indicated in these
operating instructions. If in doubt, contact Land Instruments International.

Storage
The instrument should be stored in its packaging, in a dry sheltered area.

Unpacking
Check all packages for external signs of damage. Check the contents against the packing note.

Lifting Instructions
Where items are too heavy to be lifted manually, use suitably rated lifting equipment. Refer to the
Technical Specification for weights. All lifting should be done as stated in local regulations.

Return of Damaged Goods


IMPORTANT If any item has been damaged in transit, this should be reported to the carrier and to the
supplier immediately. Damage caused in transit is the responsibility of the carrier not the supplier.

1 Introduction

1.1 About this User Guide


This User Guide contains the information necessary for you to be able
to install and operate the LAND LMi Indicator Unit (Fig. 1). Read these
instructions thoroughly before installing and using the LMi unit.

1.2 About the LMi


The LMi is a digital panel meter, designed to be used in a temperature
measurement system incorporating LAND Infrared thermometers.
The unit converts the 4 to 20mA output signal of the thermometer into a
temperature value. This temperature is displayed on the front panel of the
unit.
The LMi is available in a range of configurations. Each option corresponds to
a specific model code which is explained in Fig. 2.

2 Installing the LMi Indicator


Note

Before installing and using the LMi, refer to the detail label on the top
of the unit. Check that the model code corresponds with your order
and requirements (power supply voltage etc.)

The LMi is designed to be panel mounted.


The dimensions of the LMi and panel cut-out sizes are given in Fig. 3.

Note

Before fitting the LMi into the panel, make provision for the electrical
connections on the rear of the unit i.e. if there is limited access to the
rear of the panel, make the required electrical connections before
installing the LMi in the panel.

2.1 Installing the LMi in a panel


1) Refer to Fig. 4. Fit the gasket behind the front panel. Insert the LMi
into the panel cut-out from the viewing side so that the gasket is
trapped between the display and panel.
2) Slide one mounting clip into the slotted rail on each side of the
enclosure.
3) Tighten the clip until the LMi is held securely in the panel.

3 Electrical Connections
WARNING

Switch off the power supply to the LMi before making or altering
any electrical connections to the unit.

All electrical connections to the LMi are made via the two-part PCB connectors
on the rear of the unit. The connectors have screw clamp terminals which
accept cables between 0.5 and 1.5mm diameter.
The connections to your unit will depend on the specific model you have
ordered and your additional requirements (alarms etc.).
Refer to the instrument label and nomenclature (Fig. 2) for details of the
electrical connections for your unit.
The electrical connection layout is given in Fig. 5.
For use as a power supply to a two wire thermometer, refer to Fig. 6.

4 Quick Set-up Instructions


This section of the User Guide contains instructions on how to configure the
LMi to work with your thermometer and display temperature.
This section covers:
• Setting the temperature range
• Setting the display resolution
• Setting the position of the decimal point
• Configuring the 4 to 20mA output (if fitted)
Section 5, 'Advanced Features', contains instructions on how to use some or
all of the features of the LMi to give temperature information relevant to your
specific needs (alarms etc.).
This section assumes that the LMi is installed correctly and all electrical
connections are made to the thermometer and a suitable power supply.

4.1 Setting the temperature range 


The 4 to 20mA input to the LMi must be set to correspond with the
temperature span of your thermometer.
1)
Refer to the thermometer User Guide/Operating Instructions to obtain
the minimum and maximum temperature.
e.g. for an M1 600/1600C Tmin = 600°C
Tmax = 1600°C
2) Press (simultaneously) the and keys on the front panel of the LMi.
An overview of the LMi menu system is given in Fig. 7.
If there is no security password set, the root option will be displayed.
If a password has been set, enter the password via the , and
keys (Refer to Section 5.1.1).
3) Use the and/or keys to scroll through the menu options to select
the cAL option.
An overview of the cAL menu is given in Fig. 8 (overleaf).
4) Press the key.
The uSEr option is displayed.
5) Press the key to select the Int option.
This selects the internal calibration function of the LMi.
6) Press the key to display the ZErO option.
7) Press the key. Use the and keys to set the ZErO value
to correspond with the minimum temperature measurable by your
thermometer:
e.g. for an M1 600/1600C, set the ZErO value to 600.
8) Press the key to return to the ZErO option. Press the key to select
the SPAn option.

Note

The SPAn value must be set to the Maximum temperature of


your thermometer e.g. for an M1 600/1600C, set the SPAn value
to 1600.
9) Press the key. Use the and keys to set the SPAn value
to correspond with the maximum temperature measurable by your
thermometer.
Note

The position of the decimal point in the display can be adjusted to


suit the temperature range being measured. Refer to Section 4.3.

The LMi is now set-up to display the temperature measured by your


thermometer.
10) To exit the menu system, press the key repeatedly until the
temperature reading is displayed.

4.2 Setting the display resolution 


The display resolution of the LMi can be set to either 1, 2, 5 or 10 degrees.
This feature is useful if the source signal is noisy e.g. setting the display
resolution to 5 means that the display is updated only if the temperature
fluctuates by 5 degrees or more.
1) Refer to the thermometer User Guide/Operating Instructions to obtain
the minimum and maximum temperature:
e.g. for an M1 600/1600C Tmin = 600°C
Tmax = 1600°C
2) Press (simultaneously) the and keys on the LMi.
An overview of the LMi menu system is given in Fig. 7.
If there is no security password set, the root option will be displayed.
If a password has been set, enter the password via the , and
keys (Refer to Section 5.1.1).
3) Use the and/or keys to select the rESn option (See Fig. 9).
Press the key.
4) Use the and/or keys to select the required display resolution (1, 2,
5 or 10).
5) To exit the menu system, press the key repeatedly until the
temperature reading is displayed.

4.3 Setting the position of the decimal point (dP) 


This function allows you to select the position of the decimal point in the
display.
1) Refer to the thermometer User Guide/Operating Instructions to obtain
the minimum and maximum temperature.
e.g. for an M1 600/1600C Tmin = 600°C
Tmax = 1600°C
2) Press (simultaneously) the and keys on the LMi.
If a password has been set, enter the password via the , and
keys (Refer to Section 5.1.1).
3) Use the and/or keys to select the dP option (See Fig. 10).
Press the key.
4) Use the and/or keys to move the decimal point to the required
position in the display.
5) To exit the menu system, press the key repeatedly until the
temperature reading is displayed.

4.4 Configuring the 4 to 20mA retransmission output (if fitted)


This function allows you to select the span covered by the 4 to 20mA
retransmission output.
1) Refer to the thermometer User Guide/Operating Instructions to obtain
the minimum and maximum temperature.
e.g. for an M1 600/1600C Tmin = 600°C
Tmax = 1600°C
2) Press (simultaneously) the and keys on the LMi.
If a password has been set, enter the password via the , and
keys (Refer to Section 5.1.1).
3) Use the and/or keys to select the Iout option (See Fig. 11).
Press the key.
The 004A (4mA) option is displayed. Press the key.
4) Use the and/or keys to set the value at which 4mA will be output.
5) Press the key to return to the 004A display. Press the key to
show the 020A (20mA) option. Press the key.
6) Use the and/or keys to set the value at which 20mA will be output.
7) To exit the menu system, press the key repeatedly until the
temperature reading is displayed.

5 Advanced Features
The LMi can be set-up to provide temperature information relevant to the
specific needs of your application.
Features include:
• Anti-tamper keypad protection
• Maximum and minimum register (i.e. Peak/valley picker)
• Adjustable alarm settings (optional)
An overview of the menu system is given in Fig. 12.
Each option available in the menu system is explained in this section.

5.1 Accessing the menu system


1) To access the menu system press the and keys simultaneously.
If a security password has not been set, the root option will be
displayed.
If a password has been set, the codE message is displayed.

5.1.1 Entering the access code


1) When the codE message is displayed, press the key.
2) Use the and/or keys to change the first digit to match the first digit
of the access code.
3) Press the key to move to the next digit.
4) Repeat the procedure to set the required access code. Press the key.
The menu system is now accessed with the root option displayed.

5.2 Setting a new password


The password can be changed via the F.PAn (Front panel access) menu.
1) Access the menu system of the LMi. (Press the and keys
simultaneously, enter the password code if necessary).
2) Use the and/or keys to display the F.PAn option (See Fig. 13).
Press the key.
3) The codE option is displayed, press the key.
4) Use the , and keys to set each digit of the password in turn.
When the required password is displayed press the key to return to
the codE option.
To exit the menu system completely, press the key repeatedly until
the temperature reading is displayed.

5.2.1 What to do if you forget the password 


It is possible to gain access to the menu system if you have forgotten the
password.
1) Press the and keys simultaneously.
The codE message is displayed.
2) If you have forgotten the access code, use the , and keys to
set each character in turn until the code FPAc (Forgotten Panel Access
Code) is dispalyed. Press the key.
The menu system is accessed with the root option displayed.

5.3 Selecting the anti-tamper feature


The anti-tamper feature can be used to prevent inadvertent or mischievous
adjustment of settings.

NOTE

Once the anti-tamper feature has been enabled, the only way to regain
control of the push buttons is to enter the push button re-enable code
(Refer to Section 5.3.1).
1) Access the menu system (Press and simultaneously, enter the
password code if necessary).
2) Use the and/or keys to scroll through the menu options to display
the F.PAn option (See Fig. 13). Press the key.
3) The codE option is displayed. Press the key to display the bttn
option. Press the key.
4) To disable the front panel buttons, use the and/or keys to select
OFF.
To re-enable the front panel buttons, select ON.
5) To exit the menu system completely, press the key repeatedly until
the temperature reading is displayed.

5.3.1 Re-enabling the push buttons 


If the anti-tamper feature has been switched on, the only way to regain
control of the push buttons is to push the buttons in the following sequence:

5.4 Maximum/Minimum register


The maximum/minimum register stores (i.e. holds in memory) the highest
and lowest temperatures measured by the thermometer.
When the hLd¯ function is enabled, the maximum and minimum temperature
measured can be displayed by pressing the or key respectively.
The maximum and minimum values are lost if there is a power failure to the
LMi.

5.4.1 Enabling the maximum and minimum register 


1) Access the menu system (Press and simultaneously, enter the
password code if necessary).
2) Use the and/or keys to display the hLd¯ option (see Fig. 15).
Press the key.
3) To enable the maximum/minimum register display, use the and/or
keys to select On.
To disable the max/min register display, select OFF.
4) To exit the menu system completely, press the key repeatedly until
the temperature reading is displayed.

5.4.2 Displaying the maximum/minimum register values 


1) Ensure that the maximum/minimum register is enabled (see Section
5.4.1) and the temperature is displayed.
2) To display the maximum stored temperature, press the key.
To display the minimum stored temperature, press the key.

5.4.3 Resetting the maximum/minimum register 


Occasionally it may be necessary to reset the maximum/minimum register
(e.g. if an unusually high or low reading was recorded).
To reset the register, press the and keys simultaneously.

5.5 Programming the Alarms


NOTE

This section is relevant only if your LMi panel meter is fitted with the
Alarm option.
There are two alarm outputs available on the LMi, Alarm 1 and Alarm 2.
Both alarms have identical set-up parameters but each operates separately.
An overview of the Alarm set-up menu is given in Fig. 15.

NOTE

Fig. 15 shows the alarm set-up menu for Alarm 1 (ALr1). The set-up
menu is identical for Alarm 2 (ALr2).

5.5.1 EnbL - Enabling/Disabling the alarms 


1) Select the EnbL option from the ALr1 (or ALr2) menu.
Press the key.
2) To enable the alarm, use the and/or keys to display the On option.
To disable the alarm select the OFF option.
NOTE

If the alarms are disabled, the alarm relays will stay in the
position determined by the nE (normally energised) parameter.
(See Section 5.5.4).

5.5.2 SP1 / SP2 - Alarm Setpoint


The Alarm setpoint value is the value at which each alarm is activated. The
setpoint value is in the same units (°C/°F) as the display.
1) Select the SP1 (or SP2) option from the ALr1 (ALr2) menu (See Fig.
18).
Press the key.
2) Use the , and keys to set the required Alarm value.
3) Press the key to exit the Alarm setpoint menu.

5.5.3 hiLo - High or Low Alarm


Each alarm can be set to be either active high or active low:
Active high: This alarm will be activated by a temperature rising above the
setpoint value.
Active low: This alarm will be activated by a temperature falling below the
setpoint value.
1) Select the hiLo option from the ALr1 (or ALr2) menu (See Fig. 19).
Press the key.
2) Use the and/or key to select the required alarm mode,
Hi or Lo.
3) Press the key to exit the hiLo menu.

5.5.4 nE - Normally Energised


This parameter determines the state of the alarm changeover relay.
When nE is set to On, the alarm relay is normally energised. This ensures
that in the event of a power failure to the alarm, the alarm changes state (i.e.
fail-safe).
1) Select the nE option from the ALr1 (or ALr2) menu (see Fig. 20).
Press the key.
2) Use the and/or keys to select the required nE state, On or OFF.
3) Press the key to exit the nE menu.

5.5.5 hStr - Hysteresis


The hysteresis function can be used to prevent alarm “chatter” on a
fluctuating signal.
Refer to Fig. 20 for a graphical explanation of the hysteresis function.
The hysteresis value is set in absolute units (not percentage).
1) Select the hStr option from the ALr1 (or ALr2) menu (see Fig. 21).
Press the key.
2) Use the , and keys to set the required hysteresis value.
3) Press the key to exit the hysteresis menu.

5.5.6 dELA - Alarm Delay


The delay function can be used to select the time period for which the alarm
condition is present before the alarm is activated.
This function is useful for preventing unnecessary alarm activation. (e.g. the
delay can be set to accommodate persons/vehicles occasionally crossing the
line of sight between the thermometer and the target).
1) Select the dELA option from the ALr1 (or ALr2) menu (see Fig. 22).
Press the key.
2) Use the , and keys to select the required Alarm delay
(selectable from 0 to 3600 seconds).
3) Press the key to exit the delay menu.

5.5.7 SIL - Silence


The Silence function can be used to de-activate an alarm output (Note: if an
alarm is silenced, the alarm light on the front panel of the LMi remains lit).
To silence an alarm, press the key.
If the alarm condition is still present after the time period set for the silence
function, the alarm will be re-activated.
1) Select the SIL option from the ALr1 (or ALr2) menu (see Fig. 24).
Press the key.
2) Use the , and keys to select the required Silence period
(selectable from 0 to 3600 seconds).
3) Press the key to exit the Silence menu.

5.5.8 Ltch - Latch


This function can be used to latch the alarm(s) On.
If the input signal causes the alarm(s) to trip, then the relay output(s) will
be held in the alarm state even if the input signal falls back below the alarm
level(s).
A latched alarm is acknowledged by pressing the key.
1) Select the Ltch option from the ALr1 (or ALr2) menu (see Fig. 25).
Press the key.
2) Use the and/or keys to select the required Ltch state,
On or OFF.
3) Press the key to exit the Latch menu.

5.6 Silencing an Alarm


To acknowledge (and therefore silence an alarm), press the key.
The alarm is silenced. If the alarm condition is still present after the time
period set in the SIL (Silence) option, then the alarm will be re-activated
(Refer to Section 5.5.7).

5.7 Accessing the Alarm setpoints


It is possible to permit access to the alarm set points without having to go
through all the other programming menus.
In order to prevent unauthorised access, this feature can be password
protected. It is possible, if desired, to use the same password as that set for
the main menu.
An overview of the AcSP - Access Setpoints menu is given in Fig. 26.

5.7.1 Enabling access to the Alarm Setpoints 


1) Access the menu system (Press and simultaneously, enter the
password code if necessary).
2) Use the and/or keys to display the AcSP option. Press the key.
3) The ENbL (enable) option is displayed. Press the key.
4) To enable access to the Alarm Setpoints, use the and/or keys to
select On.
To disable access to the Alarm Setpoints, select OFF.
5) Press the key repeatedly to exit the Access Setpoints menu.

5.7.2 Setting a password to protect access to the Alarm Setpoints 


You have the option of password protecting the alarm setpoints.
1) Access the menu system (Press and simultaneously, enter the
password code if necessary).
2) Use the and/or keys to display the AcSP option. Press the key.
The ENbL (enable) option is displayed.
3) Press the key to display the Ac.cd (access code) option. Press the
key.
4) Use the , and keys to set the required password. This password
can be the same as that set for the main menu system (Refer to Section
5.2).
5) Press the key repeatedly to exit the Access Setpoints menu.

5.7.3 Gaining access to the Alarm Setpoints 


This feature permits access to the alarm setpoints during normal operation.
It does not allow access to the other features in the menu system.
This feature is only possible if the Access Setpoints (AcSP) option is enabled
(refer to Section 5.7.1).
1) To access the alarm setpoints press the and keys simultaneously.
2) If an access code has been set, the codE message is displayed. Press
the key. Use the , and keys to input the required access
code.
Press the key.
3) Use the and/or keys to select the required setpoint (SP1 or SP2).
Press the key.
4) Use the , and keys to set the new required Alarm value.
5) Press the key to exit the Alarm setpoint menu.

5.8 Setting the internal calibration references (rEF menu)


Warning

Adjusting the internal calibration settings via the rEF menu requires
the use of an accurate, traceable calibration source. Do not access the
rEF menu if you do not have such a source.
The internal references are used by the meter to calculate readings for the
internal calibrator (cAL) and the analog output option.
An overview of the rEF menu is given in Fig. 27.

5.8.1 Calibrating the input references 


1) Connect an accurate, traceable calibration source/current meter to the
input terminals of the LMi.
2) Access the rEF menu, press the key. The 0000 message is
displayed.
3) Use the , and keys to display the word SurE. The IP (input)
message is displayed.
4) Press the key. The rAnG (range) message is displayed.
5) Briefly press the key. The input signal range is displayed (e.g. 4 to
20mA).
6) Press the key to access the ZErO setting.
7) Set the output of the calibration source to the required zero setting (e.g
4mA for a 4 to 20mA input signal). Press the key to sample this input
and set the ZErO reference.
8) Press the key to access the SPAn setting.
9) Set the output of the calibration source to the required span setting (e.g
20mA for a 4 to 20mA input signal). Press the key to sample this
input and set the SPAn reference.
10) Press the , key twice to return to the rAnG option.
11) Press the key to return to the IP (input) option. If your LMi is fitted
with a 4 to 20mA analog output option, you can access the output
calibration menu (OP) from the IP menu by pressing the key (refer
to Section 5.8.2, step 4). Otherwise, press the key to exit the rEF
menu.

5.8.2 Calibrating the output references

Note

This feature is only available on LMi units fitted with a 4 to 20mA


analog output.
1) Connect an accurate, traceable calibration current meter to the 4 to
20mA analog output terminals of the LMi.
2) Access the rEF menu, press the key. The 0000 message is
displayed.
3) Use the , and keys to display the word SurE. The IP (input)
message is displayed.
4) With the IP message displayed, press the key to display the OP
(output) option (see Fig. 28).
5) Press the key. The 004A (4mA) option is displayed.
6) Press the key again. The SEt message is displayed.
7) Use the calibration source to monitor the output from the LMi. Use
the and keys to adjust the LMi output until the calibration source
measures precisely 4mA.
8) Press the key to return to the 004A option.
9) Press the key. The 020A (20mA) option is displayed.
10) Press the key. The SEt message is displayed.
11) Use the calibration source to monitor the output from the LMi. Use
the and keys to adjust the LMi output until the calibration source
measures precisely 20mA.
The OP (output) references are now calibrated.
12) To exit the rEF menu, press the key repeatedly until the temperature
reading is displayed.

5.9 Using an external source to calibrate the display


Note

This procedure requires the use of an accurate, traceable calibration


current meter.
1) If the LMi is being used as power supply to a two wire thermometer,
disconnect the thermometer from the LMi.
2) Connect the 'Drive' output of the traceable current meter to terminal 2 of
the LMi. Connect the 'Return' output of the meter to terminal 3.
3) Access the cAL menu, press the key. The uSEr option is displayed.
4) Press the key to display the ZErO option.
5) Press the key. The ZErO value is displayed.
6) Use the and keys to set the ZErO value to correspond with the
minimum temperature measurable by your thermometer:
e.g. for an M1 600/1600C, set the ZErO value to 600.
7) Set the output of the current meter to 4mA.
8) Press the key to sample the 4mA input.
The Ent message is displayed for approximately 4 seconds while the
4mA input is sampled to match the ZErO value.
When the input sampling has finished, the display shows ZErO.
7) Press the key to select the SPAn option.
8) Use the and keys to set the SPAn value to correspond with the
maximum temperature measurable by your thermometer:
e.g. for an M1 600/1600C, set the SPAn value to 1600.
9) Set the output of the current meter to 20mA.
10) Press the key to sample the 20mA input.
The Ent message is displayed for approximately 4 seconds while the
20mA input is sampled to match the SPAn value.
When the input sampling has finished, the display shows SPAn.
11) To exit the rEF menu, press the key repeatedly until the temperature
reading is displayed.
The LMi is now set-up to display the temperature measured by your
thermometer.
12) Reconnect the thermometer to the LMi (refer to Section 3.0).

EXCLUSIONS FROM WARRANTY
It should be noted that costs associated with calibration checks which may be requested during the warranty
period are not covered within the warranty.
Land reserve the right to charge for service/calibration checks undertaken during the warranty period if the
cause is deemed to fall outside the terms of the warranty.
This Land manufacturer’s warranty does not cover product malfunction arising from:-
• incorrect electrical wiring.
• connection to electrical power sources outside the rating of the product.
• physical shock (being dropped, etc.) and impact damage.
• inappropriate routing, support, physical shock & strain protection, etc. of the lightguide (Fibroptic
thermometers only).
• environmental conditions exceeding the IP / NEMA rating of the product.
• environmental conditions outside the Ambient Temperature, Humidity and Vibration rating of the product.
• environmental contamination (solvent vapours, deposition of airborne contamination, cooling liquids of
non-neutral pH, etc.).
• overheating as a result of interruption of water/air flow through cooling jackets or of incorrect installation.
• inappropriate modification of product (drilling holes in thermometer bodies, etc.).
• inappropriate recalibration which results in product calibration being taken outside specification.
• improper resealing of thermometer following parameter adjustment (UNO, FLT5/A, etc.).
• attempted repair by a non-Land-authorised repair centre.
