A luminaire that meets the
challenges of modern architecture.
Architecture has taken on a highly stylized, modern design aesthetic. Buildings throughout
the world are pushing boundaries, such as the Bird’s Nest Stadium in Beijing, the Burj
Khalifa Tower in Dubai, and London’s City Hall. Not only are these new structures taller
than ever, they are no longer confined to a single geometric shape. For example, London
City Hall is comprised of ten circular layers that overlap one another, creating a facade that
goes far beyond traditional architecture.

Another unprecedented facet of this new breed of Far more than a flood light, ReachElite is a highly

Three Sizes Fit All
The ReachElite family is available in three versions: 100, 200, and 300
watts. ReachElite 100 has a single 100 W head while ReachElite 200 and
300 have two and three 100 W modules, respectively. Each module can
offer several different applications to a lighting installation.
With just a single module and single beam of light, ReachElite 100 is best
suited to graze or illuminate specific target areas. ReachElite 100 is ideal
for the job if you require one specific application.
ReachElite 200 and 300 emit a huge amount of light, making them
great when you need color blending or washing. The 200 W and 300 W
models also offer the ability to aim multiple modules at different target
areas, providing extreme flexibility.

ReachElite Powercore includes
advanced technologies from Philips
Color Kinetics
Philips Color Kinetics is setting new standards for consistency and accuracy
by developing advanced technologies that are integrated into our luminaires,
including ReachElite. These technologies work together to deliver the ever-
escalating levels of accuracy required by our customers—and their innovative
and ambitious projects.

Optibin—our LED optimization technology—begins the

color consistency process by grouping (or binning) LEDs
by flux as well as center wavelength. This proprietary
binning optimization process uses an advanced bin
selection formula that exceeds industry standards for
chromaticity to guarantee uniformity and consistency of
hue and color temperature for all our luminaires. Used to
select LEDs for all ReachElite luminaires.

Chromasync—our color consistency technology—

adjusts the color point with pinpoint precision to deliver
improved color consistency from luminaire to luminaire.
With Chromasync, colors are more consistent, regardless
of the specific LEDs used, date of manufacture, and
other manufacturing variables. Chromasync allows
ReachElite luminaires to achieve high color precision. With
Chromasync enabled, luminaires within the IntelliHue family can achieve
color variation of less than 2 MacAdam ellipses (2 SDCM) across multiple
luminaires– without programming or additional manual tweaking to find
the optimal output and color mix. Available on all ReachElite luminaires.

IntelliHue—our advanced approach to color mixing—

enables the same ReachElite luminaire to provide high-
quality intelligent color and white light. Multiple channels
of LED light sources combine to produce a full spectrum
of precisely controllable light, including millions of
saturated colors, pastels, and uniform white light, all with
unrivaled color accuracy across the entire range of color
temperatures. Available on select ReachElite luminaires.

Powercore—our patented approach to power output—

simplifies power by controlling power output to luminaires
directly from line voltage, a faster, more efficient,
and accurate approach. Philips Color Kinetics Data
Enabler Pro merges line voltage with control data and
delivers both to luminaires over a single standard cable,
dramatically simplifying installation and lowering total
system cost. Integrated into all ReachElite luminaires.

15
Punch & Lumens
Delivering lumens exactly
where you want them.
LED luminaires are commonly marketed by their lumen
output, or how much light they emit. Punch, on the other
hand, which is essentially how much of the emitted light is
delivered to a targeted area, is not often discussed when
describing LED luminaires. The difference between lumen
output and punch is simple: Lumen output is the amount of
light emitted from a luminaire, while punch is how much of
that light goes where you want it. These two specifications
are related but illustrate two very different characteristics of a
LED luminaire.
Flood lights are generally used to illuminate large areas,
so lumen output far outweighs punch. On the other hand,
a spot light used to direct light on a specific area is more
effective with a high amount of punch. Lumen output is
important, but it is far less valuable if the majority of the
light isn’t hitting your target.
ReachElite provides the best of both worlds by
offering a truly unprecedented amount of punch in
a LED luminaire. ReachElite’s native beam angle of
2.6°, as well as with the 5° diffuser lens, delivers
light to an extremely precise target area with
an exceptionally high punch rate. The high
punch rate is the due to the narrowness of
the beam angle. The tighter the beam, the
more concentrated the light is. A wider angle
more typical of a standard flood light can be
achieved by adding a 10°, 20°, 40°, 60°, or 80°
spread lens to the luminaire. But if you want
high punch, keeping the angle below 5° will
yield incredible results.

16
Accurate Testing
LM-79-08 is an approved standard for measuring
electrical and photometric data of Solid-State Lighting
(SSL) products. One of three types of goniometers are
used to measure the data of the luminaire:

• Type A – Luminaire rotates on the horizontal axis

while fixed on the vertical axis (used for automotive
lighting).
• Type B – Luminaire rotates on the vertical axis while
fixed on the horizontal axis (used for display and
flood lighting).
• Type C – Same as Type B, except that the luminaire
burning position remains unchanged (recommended
for general lighting systems).
Although ideal for most luminaires, Type C
goniometers are not designed to measure large
luminaires with narrow beam angles 5° and under like
ReachElite. Whereas most luminaires project light
across a larger area up to a certain distance, luminaires
with narrow beam angles like ReachElite send light to
a smaller, more concentrated area farther away. Type
C goniometers can make photometric measurements
of narrow beam luminaires, but the readings will only
show a portion of the luminaire’s Luminous Intensity
Distribution as Type C goniometers only measure up
to 60 ft. For luminaires with narrow beam angles that
throw light out to distances of up to 100 ft and beyond,
Type C goniometers do not illustrate and capture the
luminaire’s full capabilities.
Commonly used on automobile head lights, Type A
goniometers are designed to measure long, narrow
beams of light up to 100 ft away, making them ideal
for LED luminaires like ReachElite. A luminaire with
a beam angle under 5° is designed to send light to a
precise target area at substantial distance, so a Type
A goniometer is better suited to illustrate this than
a Type C goniometer. A byproduct of the distance
required for Type A goniometer testing is the increased
resolution of the light beam. A measurement over a
longer distance is able to capture all of the granular
increments of a light beam.
As the LED lighting industry enters a new and exciting
“shaping of light” phase, luminaires like ReachElite
perform in ways thought impossible only a few years
ago. With innovation comes new applications, but also
the need for updated testing methods. Historically the
lighting industry has not seen luminaires with such
significantly narrow beam angles, but as they gain
acceptance it is important to establish photometric
testing methods that provide complete, accurate, and
reliable information.

Example 1 Lighting a tall, long building
Thanks to their power and flexibility, ReachElite IntelliHue Powercore 200 luminaires can
illuminate tall buildings or a city block. For example, consider a building that is 500 feet long
and 10 stories high. In this installation, 10 ReachElite IntelliHue Powercore 200 luminaires could
be installed one story up from the ground with fifty-foot spacing between each luminaire. For
each luminaire, one module could be aimed at the top of the building to highlight architectural
touches, while the other module could be fitted with a diffuser lens and aimed down to
illuminate the storefronts on the ground floor.
