 Bar Bending Machine

 Bar Cutting Machine

6.0 ACTIVITY PROCESS

6.1 Survey works

a) The level of platform for preparation of base formwork.
b) Survey calibration record is available

6.2 Inspection of materials

 Store the construction materials at storage yard and/in store as applicable.
 Prepare the reinforcement bars as per drawing.
 Prepare design mix for Concrete Grade 40/20 and carry out trial mix. Conduct slump test, to
determine water cement ratio and take sample cubes for compressive test. Ensure that the
water cement ratio for the trial mix meets the specification criteria.
 For ready mix concrete
~ Maximum size for coarse aggregate used shall be 20 mm
~ All aggregate and sand to be used for the concrete shall comply with the sieve
test requirement stated in the design specification.
~ The minimum cement content for various grade of concrete shall strictly comply
with requirement stated in the design specification.

6.3 Preparation Works

 Reinforcement Bars
a) Unless otherwise stated, all reinforcements shall conform to the latest BS 4449 with
the following minimum yield stress :
T = high yield deformed bars, 460 N/mm²
R = mild steel round bars, 250 N/mm².
b) Steel fabric reinforcement shall comply with the requirements of BS 4483
Dimension for hooks, radius of bend are to comply with BS 4466.
c) Tie the reinforcement together at its intersections with wire.

d) Sufficient tie should be made to the reinforcement to ensure that it does not move or
displace during concreting
e) Check the position of holding down bolts (if any).
f) Carry out inspection on reinforcement before proceed with concreting works
g) Concrete cover to the nearest reinforcement shall be 50 mm.
h) Lap lengths shall be accordance with BS5400: part 1990 and as shown in the
drawing.
i) All lapping shall be staggered to avoid congestion at particular location.
j) Steel spacer bars shall be provided between adjacent layers of parallel reinforcement
and spaced not more than 60 x smaller bar diameter. The diameter of the spacer
barshall be at least 25mm but not less than the diameter of the parallel
reinforcement.
k) Reinforcement bars that are already cut and ready is placed on top of the lean
concrete and tied according the drawing.
l) Column starter bar are placed and tied in final place (the location given by by
surveyors).

 Formwork
a) Arrange the formwork in such manner that will facilitate dismantling and removal
without causing major disruption or damages to structures.
b) Clean and apply mould oil to the formwork before fitting up.
c) Install the formwork in position and carefully check the dimensions against details in
the construction drawings.
d) Check the form ties are in the position and tighten properly.
e) Check erected supports/bracings conform to the approved design.
f) Check and seal up gaps/holes if any, to prevent grout loss.
g) Check and ensure that all types of openings and box-outs are of polystyrene material
or any other means approved by S.O and these are secured adequately to prevent
displacement during the placement and compaction of concrete (if any).
h) Carry out inspection on reinforcement to make sure the formwork arrangement are
correct.

i) Spacer block of 40x40x T with 1mm wire embedded in them as shown shall be used
to maintain the concrete cover to reinforcement with maximum grid spacing of 1.5m.
j) The formwork shall be set to such lines and levels to ensure that the tolerances
stated in specification are not exceeded in the structures as cast or erected.
k) Remove formwork as per specifications and rearrange the formwork after use and
store in a proper manner.

 Concreting
a) Pre-Concreting inspection
~ Determine the casting plan and compute the concrete volume required for the
pour prior to concreting works.

~ Final check steel reinforcement for number of bars, bar diameter, arrangement,
spacing, concrete cover spacer block, lappings and anchorage.

~ Check the cleanliness of all forms and ensure that the forms are free from dust,
mud or other debris.

b) Receiving Of Concrete
~ Carry out visual receiving inspection of ready mix concrete.
~ Verify the grade and quantity of concrete received. Carry out slump test to
ensure that concrete slump meets the specification criteria.
~ Sampling of concrete cube number as per project specification.
~ Mark the location of pour of concrete received on the Delivery Dockets and
Checklist for traceability and identification.

c) Placing Of Concrete
 Determine the casting plan and compute the concrete volume required for the
pour prior to concreting works.
 Final check the alignments, verticality, levels dimensions and supports of the
erected forms.
 Final check steel reinforcement for number of bars, bar diameter, arrangement,
spacing, concrete cover, spacer blocks, lapping and anchorage.

 Check the cleanliness of all forms and ensure that the forms are free from dust,
mud or other debris.
 Carry out visual receiving inspection of ready mix concrete. Record details of
inspection/delivery.
 Verify the grade and quantity of concrete received. Carry out slump test and
ensure that the concrete slump meets the specification criteria.
 Sampling of concrete cube number as per project specification.
 Mark the location of pour of concrete received on the delivery dockets for
traceability and identification.
 Provide adequate equipment, machinery and manpower to carry out the
concreting works.
 Place concrete on designated locations with crane and concrete buckets.
 Discharge concrete with less than 1.5 metres of vertical drop to avoid
segregation of concrete. Place concrete from the lowest point to the final
concrete level in horizontal layers
 Compact concrete by poker vibrators. Ensure that the concrete is worked into
the corners of the structural members

d) Curing of Concrete
~ After concrete has set, carry out curing works by applying curing compound.
