Introduction

Billinger (2001)/Auroville Mobility (2005)

Billinger’s Mobility Plan (August 2001) has been chosen as a central point of reference.
Apart from this study a few other studies are taken into account. Auroville Mobility 2005 is
one of them. This document bridges the Billinger concept into a road-plan. In short these
document states:

• Master Plan is start point;

• Between peace area and crown road mainly walking paths;
• Outer ring road leads outward traffic;
• Nodes: transport mode exchange areas;
• Preference is given to pedestrians, cyclists and to non-polluting movement;

Hierarchy:
Peace area & Inner City: Mainly pedestrian (even cyclists will be partly excluded);
Pedestrians take priority and cyclists are allowed where they do not disturb; Other vehicles in
certain times of the day; Max speed: 15km/hour;
Electrical moped should be allowed for people above 70.
Crown Road: Inner part: pedestrians; Outer part: cyclists & non-polluting
traffic/busses/electrical cars; 15km/h;
Radials: Section similar as the Crown Road;
Inside the zones: depends on local conditions with the rule of security and non-polluting;
Outer ring road: All types of vehicles; Garages etc. close to the outer ring road;
Main access roads: All types of traffic;

1
The objectives of Road Map 2012 are:

• To make a visual imprint of all the Galaxy roads;

• To bring existing and future traffic, as much as possible, on the Master Plan roads;
• To close, as much as possible, not-Master Plan roads.

Categories of development/implementation:

Activity Description/Remarks
Surveying & marking All roads should be (re)-surveyed by a competent
surveying agency. Marking should be done only
when the lands are in possession of the Auroville
Foundation and only after sufficient communication
feed back.
Managed clearing Managed clearing means that we envision a step by
General step implementation of sections of roads by a
activities L’avenir task force where the section is studied,
proposed and for feedback asked. At the same time
‘other’ roads are closed. Light paving might be
optional.
Clearing can be done in a path-way width (app. 1
meter) or in the future width. Only after
communication and feed back.
Designing See the table below for the different design aspects
Specific of roads.
activities Fixing technical All roads are technically standardized by L’avenir
specifications d’Auroville.
