Shopping smarts

I
f my daughters had their way, a trip to the mall would
go something like this: I trail behind them at a 10-foot
distance, never offer an opinion about their clothing
choices, and generally stay silent until it’s time to pay.
Alas for them, this never happens—I’m especially
opinionated about clothes that are low-cut, too short or
covered with sequins.
Something else they can depend on: I’ll never pay full price.
We go to the mall armed with coupons and a strict agenda—
I allot a specific amount of time (say, an hour and a half), pick
the stores we’re going to visit based on who’s having a sale, and
get in and out quickly. My strategy limits aimless wandering,
which leads to aimless purchases (like sparkly $50 T-shirts).
This month, as back-to-school shopping kicks into high gear,
I’m also going to use the tips in our fall shopping guide (page
131) to find even better deals. We also have some great ideas
on how to save all season long from savvy readers like Jennifer
Buddin of Charleston, SC, who reminded me it’s
time to switch the direction of my ceiling fan to
reduce home energy costs.
Also, don’t miss our story about Ruth Moore
(page 34). The survivor of a sexual assault when
she was a 17-year-old Navy recruit, Ruth fought
for decades to get the benefits that she—and other
survivors—deserved. As we were reporting this
story, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the
Ruth Moore Act, a step toward ensuring that women n

You’ll fall in love with your home again!

Paint half a table

You’ll likely see a lot of two-tone
tables in the stores this fall—it’s
an easy way to pull together
different finishes in a room.
Three looks to consider: a natural
wood surface with a white base
for a farmhouse feel (left);
dark-stained wood with a black,
navy or hunter-green base for
an antique look (below); or for
a surprising pop of color, a bold
primary hue with any finish.
DIY Sand wood or metal
legs and base pieces to remove
any flaked paint or rust. Prime
and brush on two or three
coats of paint.

DAIRY
FULLY ENJOY DELICIOUS NUTRITIOUS

AGAIN!
From ice-cold milk to tangy cheese to creamy yogurt,
there are endless ways to enjoy dairy’s deliciousness
—and its nutritional benefits. But no one with lactose
intolerance likes missing out on the foods they love
because of the discomfort that can be caused by
lactose. Knowing the level of lactose in common
foods—and which work for you—can let you enjoy
all of dairy’s deliciousness AND nutrients.
Also know that lactose free milk is still REAL DAIRY—
that provides calcium, protein and vitamins A, D and
B12. As part of a well-balanced diet, calcium and
vitamin D, may reduce the risk of osteoporosis.
Protein is an important building block of
bones and muscles.
LACTOSE LEVELS AT-A-GLANCE***

People with lactose intolerance can tolerate

different lactose levels. Knowing at-a-glance
which foods work for you means never
going without the dairy you love—or the
recommended three daily servings and
essential nutrients you need****.

0 GRAMS
LACTAID® Milk* (8 fl. oz.)
Enjoy a deliciously simple moment–AND
dairy’s health benefits–by the glass, with
cereal, in a latte, shake and more.

1-2 GRAMS
Natural Cheeses (1 oz.) like Cheddar,
Colby, Monterey Jack, Mozzarella & Swiss.
American Cheese (1 oz.)

3-5 GRAMS
Cottage Cheese (1/2 cup)
Spoon its dairy goodness
over fresh greens or spread
on a whole wheat cracker and
sprinkle with fresh herbs.
Ice Cream (1/2 cup)

5-13 GRAMS
Milk (8 fl. oz.)
Yogurt** (6 oz.)
Enjoy yogurt in a smoothie,
fruit and granola parfaits,
or as a recipe substitute for
mayonnaise and sour cream.

With so many options, how you enjoy YOUR three daily servings
of low-fat or fat-free dairy recommended by the USDA is up to you!

Food for the soul

In this exclusive sneak peek, Crystal and

we mixed cottage
