INTRODUCTION

Environmental Science – is the science that deals with the study of life and the method of sustaining it on planet
Earth. It also deals with ethics, values, sociology, politics, laws and business, motivation and responsibility.

Environment is an inevitable subject because all of man’s activities here on earth have ecological resource base.
Environment is all of the external factors affecting an organism. These factors may be other living organisms (biotic
factors) or nonliving variables (abiotic factors), such as temperature, rainfall, day length, wind, and ocean currents.

The environment is a resource: land, water, energy, fuel and raw materials on which man depends in order to develop a
better life. It is also a waste disposal system. Wastes are discharged into the rivers, oceans and even the air. The
environment also provides aesthetic functions.

Man is the most important element in this great biosphere. He is the steward of the planet earth which is now threatened
by all these irresponsible acts. Man must save the earth. Today, nations are faced with grave environmental crisis caused
by man-made and natural disasters. Man has to work double time. He has to work double time. He has to do something
about the problem whether it is big or small. He can take its low in saving earth for those who are living today and for the
generations tomorrow and the distant future. He must encourage citizens to live in harmony with nature.

The Planet Earth

It is a small island of green and blue in the vastness of space. Structurally, it is divided into a core, the innermost layer,
inaccessible to man, made up of Iron and Nickel, the mantle, the middle layer id made up of Silicon and shale. The crust,
the outermost layer is made up of the lithosphere (solid part) and the hydrosphere (the oceans, seas, lakes, rivers) and
the atmosphere (air).

The crust is the portion which contains the limited resources satisfying man’s basic needs. It is made up of the inorganic
rocks and minerals and coal, and natural gas petroleum and oil as the organic portions. It also posses thousands of
ecosystems having various climates, vegetation and animals interacting with one another. Functional components of
ecosystems such as food chain and food-web, biogeochemical cycle and the energy flow are natural occurrences in the
environment that maintains and regulate the continuous existence of the earth.

Disturbance of a single ecosystem function can lead to a series of chain reactions resulting in excessive breakdown of the
normal interrelated mechanisms and processes. Disruptions of these normal processes have resulted in changes in the
atmospheric composition and other environmental problems. Massive deforestation leads to extinction of biodiversity,
disturbs the normal hydrological cycle and cut the rate of O 2 production and increases CO2 concentration in the
atmosphere.

Two World Views

A world view is a set of assumptions that a person holds regarding the nature of the world and how it works.

CORNUCOPIANISM – it embodies the assumption that all parts of the environment ( air, water, soil, minerals and all plants
and animal species0 are natural resources to be exploited for the advantage of humans either individually or as a society.
They pointed out that without the exploitation of the natural resources, men would still be living a primitive life which is
characterized by high incidence of diseases, discomforts, pains, sufferings and short life. For them, continuing exploitation
is the only way to achieve further human progress.

ENVIRONMENTALISM – natural resources are products of the natural environment, that it is limited and will be available if
the natural environment is protected, maintained and sustained. They are not just anti-development or anti-exploitation
but they also offer and promote sustainable development.

Sustainable Development - it is the process of change by which the exploitation of resources, the direction and
investments, the orientation of technological development, and institutional changes are made responsive to future as well
as present needs.

Title: PYRAMID OF NATURE

Proponent: Rodolfo A. Pempeña II

Cooperating Agencies: San Rafael National High School

Kinalansan National High School

Description of the Project:

There are functional components of an ecosystem that must take place normally for a balanced
ecosystem to exist. The biotic component is the most active of all that it regularly interact with one
another to survive and attain stability. It needs a source of energy and the means of storing and
transferring it along with the availability of essential substances. In this instructional material it
showcase the relationship and the interdependence of different organisms through a food chain and
the classification of the organisms involve in it and the one-way path of energy through a trophic
structure represented in the so-called energy pyramid. The interaction of the different elements of
an ecosystem without any disruption ensures the equilibrium in nature.

a. Objectives:

1. To construct a model of food chain, organism classification and the energy flow in the
chain all in just one teaching item.
2. Use the constructed instructional aid in discussing the topic on ecosystem.

b. Materials:

Used illustration board

Glue
Colored paper
Miniature of animal figures

c. Procedure:

1. Cut the illustration board into pieces in a triangular shape.

2. Put together all the cut boards and form a pyramid using glue.
3. Mark each side of the pyramid into several layers using different colors of colored paper
which will serve as the trophic levels.
4. In one side, paste the different figure of animals in each layer depending upon their
order in the food chain. (Note: You may or may not label the organisms name)
5. On the other side of the pyramid paste the computerized labels of the classification of the
orders of organisms involve in the chain such as the producer, first-order consumer,
second-order and so on.
6. The last face of the pyramid will be pasted with labels of the diminishing amount of
energy starting from the producer up to the final consumer.

d. Program of Activities

The construction of this instructional material was conducted during the Seminar
Workshop on Methods and Strategies Along with Instructional Materials Production held at
Kinalansan National High School, San Jose, Camarines Sur on June 26, 2008.

e. Financial Requirements:

Glue P 12.00
Colored Paper (Assorted) 8.00
Miniature Animal Figures (1 set) 56.00
P 76.00

Findings and Conclusion

The result of this project will be used in conducting laboratory activities in Science 1 and 2
subjects. It can be also utilized in discussing topics on Ecosystem in Science 1 and 2.

Recommendation:

The item will be introduced and may be replicated by other school using the same or other
similar materials. It is not only be used in teaching science subjects but it can also be modified to fit
in teaching other subject areas.

Title: CUBIT DE ELEMENTO

Proponent: Rodolfo A. Pempeña II

Cooperating Agencies: San Rafael National High School

Kinalansan National High School

Description of the Project:

The elements are the simplest form of matter. Everything around us is made of different
elements so specific or combined with others to form a certain matter. Knowing the basic
component of most objects also means knowing the nature of elements. In this teaching
material, elements are shown with some of its basic information featured in a rubit cube toy.

a. Objectives:

1. Come up with a manipulative and challenging educational material in learning some

properties of elements.
2. Use the material for an easy teaching of the topic on element with fun.

b. Materials:

Rubit cube toy (preferably the big size)

Scoth Tape
Cut out of elemental properties such as element name, symbol and atomic number printed in
colored paper

c. Procedure:

Paste the cut out properties of elements in all sides of the cube and in each block with
one element by row using a scoth tape.

d. Program of Activities

The construction of this instructional material was conducted during the Seminar
Workshop on Methods and Strategies Along with Instructional Materials Production held at
Kinalansan National High School, San Jose, Camarines Sur on June 26, 2008.

e. Financial Requirements:

Rubits Cube P 39.00

Scotch Tape 8.00
Colored Paper 8.00
P 55.00

Findings and Conclusion

The result of this project will be used in conducting laboratory activities in Science 1 and 3
subjects. It can be also utilized in discussing topics on Elemental Properties in Science 1 and 3.

Identify the principle of environment present in the following situation. Choose only the letter.

________ 46. It has been customary for many of us to step on any wriggling creatures such as
earthworms, bugs or spiders without even considering why God made them in the first place.

________ 47. Among all creatures, humans are only ones made in God’s image and have been
given the right to have dominion over all his creations.

________ 48. Nature has built-in mechanisms to maintain balance of homeostasis- the availability of
nutrients, conduciveness of the environment for growth and reproduction and the feeding
relationships that exist between and among organisms which serve as population control.

________ 49. Deforestation in the mountains may affect the lowlands through floods, drought and
erosion. Whatever happens to one country may affect other countries.
