The WCU for the emergency lighting system has these functions: - Controls the rate of charge for its battery - Controls when the
emergency lights come on and go off - Reports condition status - Controls the selection of airplane power or its battery to operate
the emergency lights. Some of the WCUs get control information from the common data network (CDN) through wired connections.
These are the prime units. They communicate control, status, and fault information from all WCUs to the airplane. All the units are
the same part number. Physical Description Each WCU has these parts: - Charger/control unit - Battery - Housing - Electrical
connector (airplane) - External antenna. The battery is replaceable without removal of the WCU. The WCU attaches with 3 quick
release fasteners. Each WCU has a connection for an external antenna. There is an antenna on some WCUs to make sure there is
wireless reception in all interior configurations. Description of Function General The WELS shows light to find the exits. The system
does internal tests and sends signals to the common computing resource (CCR) cabinets. The WELS monitors the aircraft power and
adjusts to preserve battery capacity. You control the WELS with switches in the flight deck and on the attendant switch panels (ASP).
The switches send signals to set the status of the WELS control units (WCU). Power The remote power distribution system gives 115v
ac to the WCUs for charging the battery pack. Functional Description The prime WCUs have interface with the common data network
(CDN) through the remote data concentrator (RDC) system. The prime WCUs have an ON/OFF/ARM control wire. The prime WCUs
have these functions: - Control logic - Send commands to other WCUs - Airplane state - Communicate with CMCF - Conduct BITE test
- Report BITE status - Battery charge - Show lights and signs. The prime WCUs communicate and establish a network. The prime
WCUs select one prime WCU as master based on lowest network address. The master prime WCU communicates with CMCF. If the
master prime fails, a new master is selected based on lowest address of the remaining prime WCUs. Control Logic This is the WCU
single wire control logic: - OFF - 11v dc - ARMED - 28v dc - ON - Ground (normal) - ON - Open (non-normal). The prime WCUs send
signals to and receive signals from the other WCUs. After all WCUs have received and acknowledged the control state, a signal goes
to the flight deck. In the OFF position, all WCUs monitor charge power and communications. The emergency lighting system does not
come on if 115v ac is lost in the OFF state. In the ARMED mode, each WCU monitors 115v ac. The prime WCUs command all WCUs to
turn on the emergency lights if 115v ac is lost in the ARMED mode. If any WCU loses communication with a prime WCU in the ARMED
mode, it monitors the 115v ac. Each WCU turns on the emergency lights if 115v ac is lost in the ARMED mode. In the ON position, the
prime WCUs command all WCUs to turn on the emergency lights. Normal ON command is a ground signal. An open signal also
causes the prime WCUs to command all WCU to turn on the emergency lights. This provides automatic control if there is wiring
damage. The WCUs monitor the status of the batteries, processors, and communication links. If a failure is detected, an EICAS
message shows. The prime WCUs communicate status and fault information to the CCR cabinets. Airplane Maintenance Manual
(AMM) Standard 787-8 configuration emergency lighting - 4 prime WELS control units: - Dr 1L - Dr 2R - Dr 3L - Dr 4R. Battery life: - 4
year replacement schedule - Minimum dispatch permitted with 1 hour charging time - Power all lights and signs for a minimum of 10
minutes. The prime WCUs set up a network. The WELS control units get 115v ac from RPDUs. All 4 primes communicate among
themselves (through RDC/CDN path). - Only one is master at a time based on lowest net address after power up communication to
establish net. - Master is responsible for fault reporting and CMCF communications. (9) Operation Teaching Points 1. Control for the
emergency lighting system is from: - P5 panel emergency lights switch - Master attendant switch panel (ASP). 2. These are the EMER
LIGHTS switch positions: - ARMED (guard down) - usual switch position - ON - turns on emergency lighting system - OFF - disarms
emergency lighting system. 3. These are the emergency light switches on the master ASP: - EMER LIGHTS - turns on the emergency
lights - EMER LIGHTS TEST. 4. Push the EMER LIGHTS TEST switch on the master ASP to do a test of the system. - Turns on the
emergency lights for a short time. - Do a visual inspection with lights on to verify all lights operate. 5. CMCF also has ground test and
special functions menu to test the system. 6. A message shows if the emergency lights system is not armed or has a failure. -
Individual light failure does not show a message. Student Notes Systems Description Section (SDS) Operation General The
emergency lighting system gives light for passengers and crew to find the exits. The system does internal tests and reports to the
airplane health management system. The system monitors the aircraft power and adjusts to hold battery capacity. Control
Emergency lighting control is either automatic or manual. Selection of manual or automatic operation is from the flight deck. Manual
control is from the flight deck or an attendant switch panel. A test switch in the cabin turns on the system for a short time to allow
inspection. The emergency lighting system has 3 modes of control for the flight deck crew: - ON - OFF - ARMED. ON is manual
activation. All emergency lights come on. In the OFF mode, the system does not come on when electrical power is removed from the
aircraft. ARMED is the usual mode. In the ARMED mode, the logic within each wireless emergency lighting system (WELS) control unit
(WCU) monitors the charging power and turn the lights on if that power is lost. Control of the system from the passenger cabin has a
NORMAL and an ON mode. NORMAL leaves the system in the condition commanded by the flight deck. ON overrides the flight deck
command and turns the system on. When you push the TEST switch on the master attendant switch panel, all emergency lights
come on for a short time. This can be used to inspect the light assemblies for output and for physical damage. Indication When the
system is not ARMED, a message shows on the EICAS display. The armed indication requires that each wireless control unit (WCU)
receive the armed command and acknowledge. The WCUs monitor the status of: - Batteries - Processors - LED modules - RF
communication links. An EICAS message shows if there is a failure. A well known USA company MicroStrain produces smart,
embedded micro-displacement transducers, inertial sensors, and energy harvesting wireless sensor networks. The SG-Link® -mXRS
Wireless Strain Node presented in Fig.below features complete strain gauge signal conditioning, embedded processing, wireless
communications, and precision timekeeping, SG-Link® -mXRS wireless nodes operate within a fast, synchronized, scalable network

carrier transmission access in Ethernet networks. On Ethernet, any device can try to send a frame at any time. Each device senses
whether the line is idle and therefore available to be used. If it is, the device begins to transmit its first frame. If another device has
tried to send a frame at the same time, a collision is said to occur and the frames are discarded. Then, each device has to wait for a
random spell of time and to try again until it becomes successful in getting its transmission sent. FDMA denotes Frequency Division
Multiple Access (Fig.b). The Frequency Division Multiple Access is an access technology which is used by radio systems to share the
radio spectrum. The terminology „multiple access” implies the sharing of the resource among users, and the „frequency division”
describes how the sharing is done: by allocating users with different carrier frequencies of the radio spectrum. This technique relies
upon sharing of the available radio spectrum by the communications signal which must pass through that spectrum. The MicroStrain
USB (Universal Serial Bus) base station is a transceiver which provides a communication link between a host computer and the Agile-
Link™ family of wireless nodes including V-Link® (Wireless Voltage Node), SG-Link® (Wireless Strain Node), G-Link® (Wireless
Acceleration Node) and TC-Link® (Wireless Thermocouple Node). The USB base station employs a 2.4 GHz radio with 16 selectable
channels to communicate with the remote nodes. The USB base station is connected to a host computer via a USB connection and is
operated with MicroStrain’s AgileLink™ software.
