III. PROCEDURE
Teacher’s Activity Students’ Activity
A. Preliminary Activities
B. Lesson Proper
Before we start, let’s have a simple recap.
Anyone who can tell me regarding our
previous lesson.
We discussed about the song of John Lennon
“Imagine” with the theme unity. That all the
people will be united and will live together as
one.
Bingo. Very good. Now before we start with
our next lesson, I have here a famous quote.
Everybody please read.”
“Blood is thicker than water.”
“What do you think does it mean?”
“It means that family (represented by blood)
is more important than any other thing.”
1. Motivation

“Very good. But no matter, how thick blood is,

sometimes, something much stronger can
destroy a once strong relationship. Today, I
will introduce you to a French literature. But
before that, let’s do an activity first. I have here
the word hero. When we say the word hero, (Answers may vary)
what comes to your mid?”

Very Good. Our previous activity has

something to do with our topic. Today, you
shall learn how betrayal ruined the life of
Roland. We are going to discuss the story
entitled “The Song of Roland”.

2. Unlocking of Difficulties
“Now before we actually read the story, we
will first look into some words that you will
encounter as you go through the story that
might be unfamiliar to you. Have a look at
these sentences”
1. The Secretary of Defense was chosen
as the President’s envoy to the World
Summit. He will represent the whole
country at the summit.

2. She died last year after a valiant fight

with cancer. She bravely fought and
held on until the end.

3. The insolent students didn’t do what

their teacher wants. They acted rude
and impolitely talked to the teacher.

4. The detectives can’t seem to figure out

the tactics of the murderer. The
cunning culprit was very clever in
doing the crime.

5. The driver suffered severe injuries that

resulted to his arms being amputated.
This accident serves as a grim
reminder about the dangers of
drinking and driving.

“Based on the context of the sentence, how

can you define the emphasized word?”

(Have the students repeat the words)

“Can you use these words in a sentence of

your own?” (Answers may vary)

3. Lesson Proper

“The activity we just had relates with the

selection we are going to tackle for today
class. It’s a French epic poem, “The Song of
Roland”. Are you familiar with the
selection?”
“No, sir.”
“Before we read the story, what is an epic
class?”
“Sir, an epic is a long story telling about the
tales and adventures of a hero.”
“Very good.”

“For us to understand more the epic, let us

read the story.”(The teacher will call students
to read each part)

Process Questions
“Why did Ganelon hate Roland so much?”
“How did Ganelon betray Charmelagne and
the French?”
“Why did King Marsille target the battalion
lead by Roland?”
“How did Charlemagne find out that the
rearguard is in battle?”
“Why did Roland not blow the Olifant at the
beginning of the battle?”

C. Post-Reading
“If you were Ganelon, would you betray your
master Charlemagne just to attain your goal?”

“If you were Roland, would you sacrifice

your glory and sound the horn at the
beginning of the battle?”

“Do you think Charlemagne is a wise king to

have refused Roland’s advise to go see King
Marsille?
