The user of this penetrant materials shall obtain certification of contaminant content for all
liquid penetrant materials used on Nickel Base Alloys, Austenitic or Duplex Stainless Steel,
and Titanium. When examining Nickel Base Alloys, the sulphur content shall not exceed 1%
of the residue by weight and when examining Austenitic or Duplex Stainless Steel and
Titanium, the total chlorine plus fluorine content shall not exceed 1% of the residue by weight.
These certifications shall include the penetrant manufacturer’s batch numbers and the test

5.0 PROCEDURE
When procedure qualification is specified by the referencing Code Section, a change of a
requirement in Table 1 identified as an essential variable shall require re-qualification of the
written procedure by demonstration. A change of a requirement identified as a nonessential
variable does not require re-qualification of the written procedure. All changes of essential or
nonessential variables from those specified within the written procedure shall require revision
of, or an addendum to, the written procedure.

5.1 Surface Preparation

5.1.1 Surface preparation by grinding, machining, or other method may be
necessary where surface irregularities could mask indications. Grit or shot
blasting is prohibited as a method of surface preparation.

5.1.2 Prior to each liquid penetrant examination, the surface to be

examined and all adjacent areas within at least 25 mm shall be dry
and free of all dirt, grease, lint, scale, welding flux, weld spatter,
paint, oil and other extraneous matter that could obscure surface
openings or otherwise interfere with the examination.

5.1.3 The remover listed in paragraph 4.0 shall be used for cleaning prior to the
penetrant examination.

5.2 Pre-Examination Cleaning and Drying

Drying of the surfaces to be examined shall be accomplished by normal evaporation or
with forced hot or cold air. A minimum of five (5) minutes shall be allowed before
applying the dye penetrant.

5.3 Penetrant Application

5.3.1 The temperature of the penetrant and the surface being examined shall be
within the range of 5 degrees Celsius to 52 degrees Celsius, throughout the
examination period.
5.3.2 The dye penetrant shall be applied by brushing to the surface of part being
examined. The entire parts being examined shall be maintained wet with the
dye penetrant for minimum dwell times as per Table 2.

5.4 Excess Penetrant Removal

After the penetration (dwell) time has elapsed, any penetrant remaining on the
surface shall be removed by wiping with a cloth or absorbent paper, repeating the
operation until most traces of penetrant have been removed. The remaining traces
shall be removed by lightly wiping the surface with cloth or absorbent paper
moistened with solvent. To minimize removal of penetrant from discontinuities, care
shall be taken to avoid the use of excess solvent. Flushing the surface with
solvent, following the application of the penetrant and prior to developing, is
prohibited.

5.5 Drying After Excess Penetrant Removal

For solvent removable technique, the surfaces may be dried by normal evaporation,
blotting, wiping, or forced air. Before applying developer ensure that the surface of part
being examined is dry and clean.

A minimum of five (5) minutes shall be allowed before applying the developer.

5.6 Developing
5.6.1 Apply developer as soon as possible after penetrant removal and the part is
dry for all surfaces under examination. The time interval shall not exceed 5
(Five) minutes. It shall be applied by spraying.
5.6.2 Developing time for final interpretation begins immediately after a wet
developer coating is dry. The minimum developing time shall be as required
by Table 2.

5.7 Interpretation
5.7.1 Final interpretation shall be made within 10 to 60 minutes after the
requirement of Par. 5.6.2 are satisfied. If bleed-out does not alter the
examination results, longer periods are permitted.

5.7.2 Natural or artificial white light shall be used for examining indications. A
minimum light intensity of 100 fc (1000 lux) is required on the surface to
be examined to ensure adequate
5.7.3 sensitivity during the examination and evaluation of indications. The light
source, technique used, and light level verification is required to be
demonstrated one time, documented, and maintained on file.
5.7.4 Visible light meter shall be calibrated at least once a year or whenever the
meter has been repaired. If meters have not been in use for one year or
more, calibration shall be done before being used.

6.0 EVALUATION OF INDICATIONS

An indications of an imperfection may be larger than the imperfection that causes it; however,
the size of the indication is the basis for acceptance evaluation. Only indications with major
dimensions greater than 1/16” (1.5 mm) shall be considered relevant.

6.1 A linear indication is one having a length greater than three times the width.
6.2 A rounded indication is one of circular or elliptical shape with the length equal to or less
than three times the width.
6.3 Any questionable or doubtful indications shall be re-examined to determine whether or
not they are relevant.

7.0 ACCEPTANCE STANDARDS

These acceptance standards shall apply unless other more restrictive standards are specified
for specific materials or applications.
All surfaces to be examined shall be free of :
a. Relevant Linear indications;
b. Relevant Rounded Indications greater than 3/16 inches ( 5.0 mm ) ;
c. Four or more relevant rounded indications in a line separated by 1/16 inches (1.5 mm)
or less ( edge to edge ) ;

8.0 EXAMINATION OF REPAIRS

Unacceptable imperfections shall be repaired and re-examination made to assure removal or

reduction to an acceptable size by the same procedure use for the original examination.

9.0 POST EXAMINATION CLEANING

Post cleaning shall be conducted as soon as practical after Evaluation and Documentation
using a process that does not adversely affect the part.

10.0 DOCUMENTATION

Rejectable indications shall be recorded. As a minimum, the type of indications (linear or

rounded), location and extent (length or diameter or aligned) shall be recorded on PT. TIMAS‘s
examination report form for liquid penetrant examination on APPENDIX 1.

11.0 PERFORMANCE DEMONSTRATION

Performance demonstration, when required by the referencing Code Section, shall be

performed as per ASME Section V Article 1 Paragraph T 150 and shall be documented.
