I, Milton Hershey, am a
memorable figure because of
my contributions to society
and my community.
I was born on September 13,
1857 in Derry Township, PA.
My mother’s name was
Veronica “Fanny” Snavely
and my father’s name was
Henry Hershey. We lived in a
very rural area.
At age 14, I unfortunately dropped out
of school to become an apprentice with
a master confectioner in Lancaster,
PA. An apprentice is someone who
helps and trains to become a certain
type of trade or job. He helped instill a
love for candy making within me.
Four years later, I borrowed $150
from my aunt and set up my very
own candy shop in Philadelphia,
PA. Later in 1883, I returned to
Lancaster to start the Lancaster
Caramel Company which was a
huge success!. We shipped
caramel all over the country!
