Internship Goals

Goal 1: To better understand medical terminology, common cardiac diagnoses, their accompanying
treatments and procedures, and the psychosocial and developmental implications that go along with them
Objectives:
- I will choose and research 2-4 common cardiac conditions to learn more about
the specifics of that condition. I will write a one page summary on my research
for each diagnosis
- I will create one therapeutic activity or preparation activity for each diagnosis
that could be used to support patients and families
- I will observe and participate in procedural support and coping techniques for
common procedures and treatments for cardiac patients. I will create a list of
procedures that I witness, including age and techniques used for procedural
support.
- I will develop a notebook that I use to keep track of different medical
terminology, acronyms, and procedures

Goal 2: To increase my knowledge and skill in how to chart in medical documents

Objectives:
- I will read chart notes daily to get an understanding of how they should look
and sound. I will develop a visual chart weekly that states how many chart notes
I read and examples of language used.
- I will observe my supervisor write chart notes on patients that we interacted
with together and include them in my chart.
- I will practice writing 4-6 chart notes, and have them approved by my
supervisor

Goal 3: To become more comfortable and confident in supporting infants and their families
Objectives:
- I will interact with infants and families consistently throughout my internship
experience. I will read 2-3 articles about supporting infants during hospitalization
and write short summaries about each.
- I will observe and participate in weekly developmental rounds for infants
under the age of 12 months who have undergone cardiac surgery to learn more
about supporting infant development in the hospital. I will write about key points
of developmental rounds in my weekly journal.
- I will develop developmental requisites and/or “All About Me” information
sheet for 2-3 patients to help support their development during and post
hospitalization
