Self-Introduction

My name is Isabelle Tsosie and I am currently a student at ASU. My educational

background includes a AA (Associate of Arts) from a Community College. I have no field
experience of any kind. My only close experience is hearing stories of my mother’s classroom
since she is a Paraprofessional. I listen to her stories and try to imagine what it would be like
instructing a classroom.
I always gravitated towards teaching as a career. Being a teacher is an unique job that
challenges both the teacher and student. By teaching, I can plant seeds into students that I can
nurture and grow. My biggest desire is to become that one teacher that transformed one student
to do their best and to never give up. My favorite teachers have been so inspiring and
encouraging that I wanted to pursue teaching. They planted a seed inside me, now I can transfer
my seed to my students.
My personal philosophy of education will change as time passes and when I do get
experience from teaching. My vision is to create a safe, empowering and inspiring learning
environment so I can nurture a student's full potential. I intend to help every student to achieve
their dreams and become successful in their educational career. I want students to strive for the
best and go beyond. I have a friendly nature and I am passionate about making students’ pursue
their dreams. I believe students have weaknesses and strengthens but it is up to the teachers to
tap into both and help students hone their skills. The struggle is where the learning come from.
Based on the research of Madeline Hunter, Dr. Fred Jones and Dr. Harry Wong, my
belief is that students should be all treated with kindness. Every student should feel safe and
comfortable in a classroom and should not worry about what color their skin is. I will do
everything in my being to make sure each child is getting proper education. Students should
embrace their differences and become one with one another. They are the future and their
education is my number one priority. It’s up to me to lead them in the right direction.

Room Arrangement

My classroom arrangement was research from Dr. Fred Jones, Dr. Harry Wong and

Madeline Hunter. I used their ideas to create my ideal classroom. This classroom set up is for 32

students. I had no limit to what I can have in my classroom.

Student Desk

I have 32 desks and two large desk. The desk will be facing forward toward the

Smartboard and Whiteboards. This will decrease any distraction and their main focus will be on

the board. The desks are in grouped in trios. The students can easily turn their desks and face

each other. Getting in or out of groups will be faster due to the fact that the desks don’t have to

move that much. There is plenty of room for mobility. I can walk in between the desks because

they each have a walkways all around them.

Large Table

They are two large tables on both ends of the room. These desks are to accommodate

students who are in wheelchairs and for extra desks. The large tables have plenty of room

surrounding it. The tables are located behind other student desks so if we do have group work,

they can easily join the students in front of them.

Teacher Desk

The Teacher’s Desk will be located in the upper left corner of the room. The desk is out

of the way and I can see the students easily. Since the teacher’s desk is in the corner of the class,

I save space and I will be closer to the students.

Teacher’s Locked Cabinet

5

Right behind the teacher’s desk will be the locked cabinet. This is strictly off limits to

students and can only be accessed by me. This locked cabinet will contain student files such as

any personal information. It is placed behind my desk for safe keeping.

Filing Cabinet

This filing cabinet will also be behind the teacher’s desk. I can file my paperwork here.

Material Cabinet

The material cabinet is located in the bottom-right of the classroom. I will have three

large cabinets to put supplies and extra school materials. It is out of the way of any walkways

and it is easily accessible to the students if they need anything.

Locked Chromebook Cabinet

The locked Chromebook cabinet is located in front of the teacher’s desk. These laptops

are locked until they are needed in class. The reasoning for their location is that I can keep my

eyes on them at all times.

Mounted Projector

In the middle of the room, on the ceiling, is where the mounted projector will be. It is

safely secure on the ceiling and out of the way. The mounted projector will help me show my

lessons on the Smartboard.

Smartboard

The Smartboard will be in the front wall in the middle of the class. Since the students

desk are facing forward, they won’t have any trouble looking for the Smartboard. The students

will always be looking at me or the Smartboard while doing a lesson.

Trash can / Recycle

6

The trash can and recycle are located in the right corner of the room, right next to the

door. This is the most efficient placing for the trash can. Students can throw away their trash

entering or leaving class. I wanted to pick recycle because I believe in helping the environment

and I hope this promotes students to recycle.

Whiteboards

I will have four whiteboards. Two of them will be on both sides of the Smartboard and

the other two will be located in the back of the class. These whiteboards will show the agenda for

the date or if the Smartboard stops working. The whiteboards can show upcoming due dates or

extra instruction.

Bulletin Board

I will have two bulletin boards on the right and left side of the classroom. This is for less

distraction so students won’t be looking at them all the time. On the bulletin boards, I will have

inspirational quotes, student work, school lunch schedule, and a safety zone. A safety zone is

where I can post emergency hotlines like the suicide hotline or runaway hotlines. I want my

students to feel safe and I want them to know that they are not alone.

Constitution, Bill of Rights and the American Flag

I put these in the bottom left corner of the room. It’s require in Arizona to have these.

Bookshelves
7

I placed the bookshelves in the bottom right corner by the material cabinet. Since, I am a

English teacher I will need a bookshelf. This bookshelf will contain class set of books we need

for lessons and reading.

Homework Station

I placed the homework station by the entrance. I wanted the students to enter my class and turn

in their homework here. It is simple and easy. The homework station is out of the way and

conveniently placed. The station will have slots for each class. There will also be slots for extra

papers if students were absent and didn’t get a handout.

Classroom Procedures
The following procedures for this classroom are taken from research done by Dr. Harry
Wong, Dr. Fred Jones and Dr. Richard Lavoie.

Beginning class
To begin class, I will greet the students at the door. This gives me a chance to have one-
on-one time with each of them. They will be instructed to hand in any homework from the day
prior to the homework station. Then, the students will quietly sit at their assigned desk and have
put any electronics away. The bellwork will always be posted on the Smart Board. Students will
have 5 minutes to complete the bellwork. When time is up, I will go over bellwork and proceed
will with the lesson plan according to that day.
Transitions between Activities
For transitions between activities and lectures. I will have a auditory signal and verbal
signal. When the time is right, I will slowly countdown from 3 and say, “Ladies and Gentlemen,
eyes on me” while having my hand up. This will refocus the class and stop any student
conversation. For a quicker and smooth transition, I will use a timer.
Ending Class
I will stop the lesson 5 minutes before the bell and have the students pack up. The closure
will be posted on the Smartboard and instruct the students what they need to do. I will have their
homework and other due assignments on the board as a reminder after the closure is finished.
Students will pick up any trash before they leave and dispose of them to their appropriate bin.
The bell never dismisses the students. I will dismiss them.
Managing Student Work
a) Collecting homework: Students will hand in their homework at the homework station before
class. Then, I will collect them from there. b) Handing back work: Students will be seated in
assigned desks. I will pass back work face down individually. c) Handing out materials for the
lesson: All materials for the lesson will be located in the back material cabinet. I will instruct the
students, in small groups, to collect their needed material. All material will be provided by the
teacher.
10

Student Absences
Students will be given until the end of the week to turn in any missing work. If they do
miss a Friday they will have the upcoming Friday to turn in their work. If they do not turn in
their work within the week span they will receive a zero. All missing work will be in folders
(according to classroom period) on the homework station. It is the student's’ responsibility to
complete and turn in missing assignments.
Late Work
Late work will not be accepted. All work must be turned in on the day it is due. I will
give students enough time during class to finish their work. They have until the end of the day to
turn in any work but after that they will receive a zero. Late work and other absence policies will
be posted on the bulletin board as a reminder on what I expect from them.
Grading and Recording Student Work
Grading student work will dependent on the length of the assignment. Longer
assignments that will take time, I will give myself a week to complete. As for shorter
assignments, I will grade them as soon as possible and have them finished the next day. Any
work that is turned in will be recorded as I grade them.
Communicating with Parents
The most efficient way to talk to parents is to email them. If by any chance they do not
have a email, I’ll give my student a hand out to give to their parents. If there is any behavioral
issues with a student, I will call their parents and have a face-to-face meeting. Parents will also
get calls randomly for positive remarks about their child that day.

Consideration for Diverse Students

Lessons and classroom procedures will be carefully planned considering student’s diverse
needs including all IEPs and 504s along with any other accommodations. Procedures will be
taught to the students and re-taught to them throughout the school year. For ELL students, I will
give them extra time to complete work. Procedures and rules will be posted on bulletin boards
around the classroom. If any student needs additional help, I will be available during office
hours.
11

Rules and Consequences

Based on the information presented by Dr. Harry Wong, Madeline Hunter, and Dr.
Richard Lavoie, my classroom will have five specific and easy rules to follow. My rules will be
reviewed the first day of class and posted as a reminder for students throughout the year. I feel
that it’s important for students to know what my expectations are and if they break one of my
rules, I will follow due process. These rules will create a safe and respectful learning
environment so every student can benefit from.
Classroom rules:
1. Only one person talks at a time, using appropriate language.
2. Cellphones will be on silent mode, put away in student’s bag or placed face down on
desk, until the teacher says otherwise.
3. Students will remain seated at all times unless instructed by teacher.
4. Students are to keep all body parts and personal items to themselves.
5. Only the teacher dismisses the class.
Consequences
● First Offense - Warning / Conference
● Second Offense - Call Home
● Third Offense - Detention
● Fourth Offense - Administrative Referral
**Teacher reserves the right to skip steps based upon the severity of the violation.

Summary
After researching the work of Dr. Harry Wong, Dr. Richard Lavoie, Dr. Fred Jones, and
Madeline Hunter, I have developed a classroom management plan that will go in effect when I
start teaching. By establishing my classroom arrangement, classroom procedures and
rules/consequences, I can guarantee that students will be able to manage their time and behavior
to be successful. In my classroom, I want every student of mine to feel safe and respected. I have
zero tolerance for discrimination based on religion, ethnicity, race, gender, sexual orientation, or
mental disabilities. By creating a safe environment where students can succeed, I can be a
successful educator.
