Sheet Numbering For Large Scale Map
• Sheet numbering is the system in which
individual map sheet within the series are
numbered.
• To reduce the distortion of length 3 degree
longitudinal zones are taken for Large scale
sheet numbering.
• According to Triangulation instruction book, the special
grid system for Nepal was developed as follows:
– Central Meridian 810, 840, 870 East
– The area of 30 longitudes (1030’east and 1030’ west of
central meridian) and 50 latitudes (260 to 310) is taken as 1
Zone. By this way, Nepal is divided into three zones.
– Area of each zone is 300 Km*500 Km
– Each 30 zone is divided into grid square 50 Km* 50 Km (10
rows*6 columns) called grid sheet
– Numbering Starts from the North-west corner to the
South-east corner------
7
– Total number of Grid Sheet = 180 (Numbering 001 to
180)
– 60 Grid sheets are in each Zone
– Each Grid Sheet (50 Km* 50Km) further divided into
1600 smaller squares (40 belts*40columns)
– ---Scale 1:2500
– ---Map format 50cm*50cm
– ---Ground area coverage 1250m*1250m
– ---Sheet Number 0001 to 1600 (40*40)
– ---The Number of the Grid Sheet should be written in
front of it
• 2rows*2columns = 625m*625m = Numbering
1 to 4 (Scale, 1:1250)
• 5rows*5columns = 250m*250m = Numbering
01 to 25(Scale, 1:500)
• Notation
– Grid Sheet---- 001 to 180
– 1: 2500------- 180-1600
– 1: 1250 ------180-1600-4
– 1:500 --------180-1600-25
Spheroid

• Oblate spheroid: The solid figure generated by the rotation

of the ellipse about its minor axis is called oblate spheroid.
• The oblate spheroid is the best fits mathematical shape of
the earth to its actual shape.
• In this spheroid, equatorial radius is greater than the polar
radius. These cadastral maps are based on the Everest
Spheroid with following parameters:
– Spheroid Name: Everest 1830
– Semi major axis (a) : 6377276.345 m
– Semi minor axis (b) : 6356075.413 m
– Flattening (f) : 1/300.8017
– Origins :
Projection
• The systematic representation of the parallels
of latitude and the meridians of longitude of
the spherical surface of the earth into plane
surface of paper is called projection.
• In Nepal Modified Universal Transverse
Mercator (MUTM) projection is adopted.
• It has following parameters:
• Origins :
– Longitudes (Central Meridian) – 810, 840, 870
– Latitude- 00 at equator
– Easting – 500000m false co-ordinates at the
central meridian
– Northing – 0 m at the equator (2900000 m to
3400000 m within Nepal)
• The scale factor 0.9999 at the central
meridians
