Tutorial 1

Question 1

The aluminium block has a rectangular cross section and is subjected to an axial compressive force of 40
kN as shown in figure 1. If the 15 mm side of the block is changed to 15.00132 mm due to compressive
force,

i. Determine the poisson’s ratio

ii. Find the new length of the 20 mm side of the block

Take the Young’s Modulus of elasticity as 70 x 10³ MPa

Question 2

The stress strain diagram for a steel alloy having an original diameter of 12 mm and a gauge length of 50
mm is given in the figure 2. Determine

i. Approximately the modulus of elasticity for the material

ii. The load on the specimen that causes yielding
iii. The ultimate load the specimen will support
Question 3

The acrylic plactic rod is 200mm long and 15 mm in diameter. If an axial load of 300 N is applied to it,
determine the change in its length and the change in its diameter . Ep = 2.7 GPa, Vp = 0.4

Question 4

The splined end and gears attached to the A-36 steel shaft are subject to the torques shown in Figure 5.
Construct free body diagram for section AC, CD, and DB. Determine the angle of twist of end B with
respect to end A. The shaft has a diameter of 40 mm and shear modulus of elasticity G = 75 GPa
Question 5

The gears attached to the fixed-end steel shaft are subjected to the torques shown in Figure 6. The shaft
has a diameter of 15mm and its shear modulus of elasticity is 80 GPa. The shaft turns freely within the
bearings at B.

i. Calculate the internal torques in section AC, CD, and DE.

ii. Calculate the angle of twist of end A with respect to end E.

iii. Calculate the displacement of the tooth P on gear A

Question 6

A steel bar has the dimensions as shown in Figure 2, An axial force of 100kN is applied to the bar. The
material of the bar behaves elastically.Determine:

a) The normal stress in the bar

b) The normal strain in the bar
c) The axial
d) elongation in the bar
e) The changes in the dimensions of the cross section of the bar

Take the Young’s Modulus of elasticity of the bar as 200GPa and its Poisson’s ratio equal to 0.4

Question 7

A tensile stress is to be applied along the long axis of a cylindrical brass rod that has a diameter of 20
mm. Determine the magnitude of the load required to produce a 3.5 x 10ˉ³ change in diameter if the
deformation is entirely elastic. The value of Poisson ratio for brass is 0.34 and modulus of elasticity is 97
GPa.
