Reading Project: Part 1 – Action Plan

a. Students are expected to know 12 out of the 26 letters at this point. They should recognize both the upper
and lowercase of the letters. The next step would be to recognize the sounds of 12 letters. I did not test this
because my students are clearly not ready for it and it’s not worth frustrating them. I used one data source
with 3 data points because this is what made sense for this expectation. There is only one way to measure
letter recognition. I wanted to make sure students were really struggling and it was not just an off day.

d. The intervention schedule would be 15 minutes four times a week: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and
Friday.
e. I will use flashcards to help students identify the letters. Flashcards of the letters that students do not know
will be sent home for practice. Students will practice writing the letters while saying the sound the letter
makes using whiteboards and iPads. Students will use beginning sound sorts to learn letter sounds. These
activities will help students master of the targeted skills by familiarizing them with the letters and their
sounds.
f. I will use a web based assessment and reporting system called Educational Software for Guiding Instruction
(ESGI) to monitor my students progress. This tool will be used once every week. The assessment displays
an uppercase letter and I prompt students by asking ‘what letter is this?’ Next I go through the uppercase
letters prompting students with ‘what sound does this letter make?’ Then I repeat this process with
lowercase letters. This is assessment hits directly on my target skills and give me accurate and quick data on
what letter students know and which ones we still need to work on.
