Classroom Management Plan

1. Teaching Philosophy
My teaching philosophy is centered on forming relationships with my students. I
believe that a skillful educator builds a good relationship with their students based on
mutual understanding, respect, and trust. I plan on doing this by having conversations
with my students about subjects or issues that they find important. I understand that
our youth have the ability to make great changes to our society and I must provide them
with the tools to be successful in society.
As a Middle School history teacher, It is one of my goals is to show my students
that the study of history is a creative process that is based on the analysis of historical
evidence which results from conversations between historians and historical actors
being studied. When students engage in these historical conversation in my classroom,
it prepares them to be conscious historical actors while also providing them with a space
of mutual respect and better understanding for toleration of diverse opinions.
A good portion of my instruction is based on active learning. I like to use the
relationships that are formed with my students to encourage class discussion and
interaction on the subject being covered. Role-playing is a method that I believe gives
my students a good understanding of historical analysis, encourages group discussion,
and allows students to examine and reconstruct history in a way that might interest
them

3. 20 Things to do before the first day of school

1. Locate your classroom(s) and inventory your equipment (desk, technology, support
material) and student equipment (calculators rulers, glue, and paper)
2. Locate class list from office (may not be available until closer to the first day of school)
3. Locate a student supply list. Determine what the students should bring and what the
school supplies.
4. Locate and start reviewing your school/district handbooks, policy books, and
procedures guides.
5. Locate and inventory textbooks.
6. Arrange layout of classroom (keeping in mind the flow of traffic and good visibility of
chalk/marker board, screens, and monitors.
7. Become familiar with school facility and campus (office, lunchroom, gym, restrooms,
parking).
8. Talk to other teachers in school to get an idea of their discipline plan.
9. Find out what to do in case of fire, tornado, bomb threats, and intruder and determine
the procedure/routine you will establish to meet these emergency needs.
10. Determine what other equipment is available in the school /district that you need, but
is not located in your classroom.
11. Find out what information is needed for the office, from your class each day
(attendance, lunch) and determine the procedure/routine you will establish to
provide this information.

12. Find out if the nurse provides a list of students in your class with medical needs. If not,
review permanent files and prepare list.
13. Prepare record tool for keeping grades and attendance (electronic and/or traditional
grade book).
14. Prepare tool for lesson plans (electronic and /or traditional lesson plan book).
15. Prepare your own desk with personal items needed (small first-aid kit, Kleenex, small
tool kit, emergency apparel, safety pins, sewing kit, flashlight)
16. Determine functions/purpose of all bulletin boards and prepare for the opening of
school.
17. Set up files for handouts, tests, student information, essential information from the
district, and important information from your principal.
18. Hang your teaching certificate and diploma in your classroom
19. Get to know your Mentor teacher (assigned by district)
20. Determine what you will utilize to carry materials to-and-from (brief case, canvas bag,
backpack) and secure it

4. Classroom Procedures

1. Entering Class: Be seated before tardy bell

2. Check front board for bell work
3. Tardy: Provide tardy slip and speak with me after class
4. Leaving the class: Ask permission and bring hallway pass
5. Gum/candy: None unless given permission
6. Cellphone: None allowed
7. Getting student attention: If I lose your attention, I will clap once, ask if you heard me,
and expect your full attention.
8. Seating plan: I will choose two different seating plans throughout the semester
9. Extra time: If you finish your class work early make sure you have something else to
work on, silent read, or borrow a book from my bookshelf
10. Room appearance: Students will not be dismissed until the area around their desk are
clean
11. Class dismissal: I dismiss the class, not the bell
12. Questions: Always raise your hand
13. Absent: Meet with me for completion of in-class assignments
14. Use of planners: I will check planners periodically for extra credit. Make sure you write
important due dates
15. Exams and quizzes: format will change but you will be informed well in advance
The main reason that I have listed these specific procedures is because they are
needed to keep a 7th grade classroom orderly. I must provide structure for my students
and a well thought out list of procedures that informs my students about what they
should be doing when they enter my class, what they should expect during my class, and
how to properly perform my everyday class functions.

5. Classroom Rules

1. No food (including candy) or drink in the classroom, expect for bottled water.

**If bottled water becomes a distraction, it will also be restricted

2. Keep hands, feet, and any other objects to yourself

3. Follow directions the first time they are given

4. Use appropriate voice levels and language

5. Be in seat and working before the tardy bell

I will allow my students to vote on rules in my class and add any others that they want
but they will have the five “golden rules” that are above. The reason I chose these five
rules is because they ask for respect on all levels while also mentioning specific rules that
control behaviors that stem from food, personal space, respect for directions, and
reinforces some of the classroom procedures.

6. Grading/assessment

 40%: Projects/Test
 20%: Classwork
 15%: Participation
 15%: Final work
 10%: Homework
I believe that projects and test show how much effort that a student is willing
to put towards your class and this deserves to carry a sizable percentage of the overall
class grade. I also believe that students need the opportunity to pass a class if they put
forth the effort but does not achieve the deserved. This is why I allow 60% of the
overall class points to be gathered through coursework, participation, homework, and
final work which consist of notebook points, agenda points, and organizational skills
for projects.

7. Parent Communication

Parental involvement in a child life is one of the most influencing factors for a child’s
education. I plan on approaching parent communication from multiple angles because not every
household is the same. Ill provide a quarterly update that keeps the parents informed on what is
being worked on in my class room and do my best to keep parents informed on their child’s progress
and achievements. Ill provide my email address for those with internet access, my school phone
number so parents can reach during scheduled hours, and provide certain dates that I can meet with
parents if the time frame for parent teacher conferences does not work out.
