Nemo Handy offers a completely configurable graphical user interface that has been
optimized for small screen devices. A wide range of predefined data views is included.
However, the user can also create new views and modify the predefined ones to display all
the relevant network parameters supported by the terminal’s mobile trace interface. The views
can be edited with the PC software Nemo Handy Configuration Editor included in the Nemo
Handy package. All display settings are stored in an .xml file, enabling the same custom
configuration to be used for any number of Nemo Handy terminals.

Application testing and RF parameter displays can be viewed simultaneously. Application

QoS/QoE statistics are displayed in real time for all of the supported applications, namely
voice/video calls, PDP context, FTP/HTTP connections, SMS/MMS messaging, HTML/WAP
browsing, email sending/receiving, and ping.
The real-time results of both manual and script-aided testing can be monitored throughout the
duration of the connection via various data views, such as text and grid views, neighbor
graphs (bar, line, and inter-system bar), and stackable bar and line graphs.

Bar and line views display parameters in both numerical and graphical format. Line graph
scales change according to selected parameter. Automatic scaling is also possible. Bar graph
scales can be displayed for each bar simultaneously. Integer parameters can be displayed
either in decimal or in octal format. Bars are color-coded based on user-definable threshold
values.

The current logging status is displayed on each page by the Nemo Handy icon. Serving
channel information, or other user-configurable information, can be displayed on every page
as a small text box overlaying the Nemo Handy icon. BTS information, i.e. serving cell name,
site name, distance to serving cell, and cell ID, can also be displayed based on a BTS file.
CELL AND TIMESLOT TESTING
Nemo Handy supports cell and timeslot testing. The cell testing feature enables the testing of
GSM and UMTS cells by initiating voice calls and/or PDP Context Activations. All cells on the
neighbor list that meet the user-defined threshold value are tested. The resulting file contains
the testing session date, phone number, the number of call and packet data connection
attempts, the session status, and a list of tested cell(s) with test results.

The timeslot testing feature makes it possible to test the timeslots of a particular user-defined
cell (GSM). The resulting file contains the testing session date, channel number, the number
of call attempts, the session status, and test results per timeslot.
SCANNING
Nemo Handy offers support for GSM frequency scanning and UMTS pilot scanning. Nemo
Handy frequency scanning enables the carrier frequencies of a selected wireless system to
be detected and evaluated in terms of field strength. If Nemo Handy is equipped with a GPS
receiver, position data can also be included in the logged scanning results.
Frequency scanning results contain the field strength values for all detected carriers. The
results can be used, for instance, for frequency planning (placing BTS sites) and interference
measurements.

In UMTS pilot scanning mode, Nemo Handy decodes individual pilot signal scrambling codes
and measures their signal-to-noise ratio (Ec/N0 values) and signal code power (RSCP).
The data collected can be used, for example, for network planning, tuning and interference
measurements.
APPLICATION TESTING
Nemo Handy supports several built-in application testing options. It is possible to test voice
quality, voice and video calls, FTP/HTTP data transfers, HTML/WAP browsing, SMS/MMS
messaging, email sending and receiving, and ping. The QoS/QoE KPIs logged by Nemo
Handy include connection setup delay, download time, time-to-content delay, throughput, etc.

VOICE QUALITY OPTION

Nemo Handy supports both manual and scripted voice quality measurements. The Voice
Quality testing feature of Nemo Handy, provided by the Psytechnics’ PSM Mobile module,
enables the measurement of voice quality in a live network based on the ‘average’ listener’s
perception of speech quality. This is frequently referred to by the term MOS (Mean Opinion
Score).

Speech quality can be measured using two complementary means: subjective and objective
tests. In subjective voice quality testing, a panel of users rates a given quality on a limited
scale of 1-5, after which a MOS is calculated by averaging the votes of all the subjects. To
make voice quality measurements more time and cost-effective, intensive effort has been put
into developing objective testing techniques that enable automated prediction of speech
quality without the need for extensive subjective testing. PSM Mobile by Psytechnics is an
objective, non-intrusive (passive) testing technique which utilizes the Psytechnics database of
220,000 subjective votes.
PSM Mobile is a port of Psytechnics NiQA-DSP-LQ algorithm. At its core, NiQA-DSP-LQ has
a sophisticated identification system which has been designed to cover a wide variety of
speech distortion and degradation classes, and to predict their impact on the subjective
quality of the speech stream as perceived by human perception. PSM Mobile is a lighter and
faster version of ITU P.563, predicting a Listening Quality MOS in a similar way to P.563.
PSM Mobile is embedded in Nemo Handy and it is activated whenever a signal is received.
Nemo Handy produces a MOS based on the listening quality of a received signal. Nemo
Handy obtains the signal by calling a test server (i.e. Nemo Server) which automatically starts
sending an audio sample (provided by Anite Finland Ltd) to the caller. Optionally, voice quality
can also be tested between two Nemo Handy terminals, with one of the terminals acting as a
test server.
As regards accuracy, NiQA-DSP-LQ has been tested over a wide range of network
architectures, conditions and languages in accordance with current ITU practice. The model
has a good correlation with subjective material of 20, 000 speech files.
It is worth noting here that although the passive testing of voice quality is highly reliable due to
its correlation to a host of subjective test sessions, the accuracy and reliability of single point
MOS measures are still improving as more calls are being analyzed and averaged over time.
Consequently, it is not advisable to make any decisions on network routing or configuration
based on a single call MOS.

VIDEO STREAMING QUALITY OPTION

Video streaming quality measurement is an optional feature of Nemo Handy. It assesses the
quality of the video stream and returns a Mean Opinion Score (MOS) prediction of how the
‘average’ customer would perceive it. IP and network level diagnostics are also recorded to
pinpoint reasons and problems behind the MOS score.

Nemo Handy video streaming quality measurements are based on PVI (Psytechnics Video IP
Monitor). PVI is a non-intrusive, non-reference method for measuring video quality by
analyzing the video stream IP packet flow. The characteristics of the IP stream, such as
packet loss and jitter, and the behavior of the jitter buffer and the error concealment algorithm
in the terminal are used to assess the MOS score. Properties of the stream, such as video
format and bandwidth, are also taken into account. With 120kbps bandwidth .3gp stream in
the Nokia N95 phone, the best achievable MOS score is typically around 3.9. The lowest
possible MOS score is always 1, regardless of the stream type. If the stream freezes, a 0
MOS score is reported.

Video streaming quality measurement is activated whenever a video stream download is

started from Nemo Handy. RealPlayer for s60 is used as a streaming client and thus all video
formats supported by RealPlayer can be used in measurements. Video content from any
accessible public, commercial, or private test server can be used in the tests. Access point
name and URL of the video stream are the only required parameters in the test setup. Tests
can be performed manually or automatically with user-configurable scripts. In addition to the
MOS score, Nemo Handy records jitter and packet error rate on the IP level, and a full set of
RF and network level KPIs (RSCP, Ec/No, BLER, L3 signaling, etc.) During the
measurement, instantaneous MOS, IP and key network level diagnostics are all displayed
with the actual video stream. The average MOS score is displayed at the end of the stream.

menu or by pressing a shortcut button. Scripts can be used to make multiple video calls in the
same manner as voice calls. Automatic video calls between two mobiles can be made by
setting one of the Handy mobiles to Autoanswer mode.
Video call related measurement events stored in the Nemo Handy log file include call attempt,
call connect success, call disconnect, and call failed.
DVB-H TESTING
Nemo Handy DVB-H presented on the Nokia N96 test terminal is the first hand-held
measurement tool in the world to provide support for DVB-H network measurements. This
upscale measurement tool provides excellent data visualization, and comes separate from the
standard Nemo Handy application.

Nemo Handy DVB-H includes, for example, the following parameters: DVB-H hierarchy, RX level,
DVB-H FER before FEC (FER), DVB-H FER after FEC (MFER), DVB-H bit error rate before Viterbi (BER),
and DVB-H frequency 470-750 MHz.

testing. Ping testing can be performed simultaneously with other PS data applications. Ping
round-trip time is measured in milliseconds and displayed as a graph. Ping related
measurement events stored in the Nemo Handy log file include ping attempts, ping
failed/succeeded, and ping success rate.
INDOOR MEASUREMENTS
Nemo Handy provides indoor map support with an easy-to-use interface that includes zoom
and pan tools. Digital images can be imported to Nemo Handy and converted into map files
(.tab). The scale of the map can be set based on a known distance on the map. The geodetic
coordinates of the map can also be set based on two known coordinate positions.

The measurement route can be drawn on the map with markers. When post-processing with
Nemo Analyze or Nemo Outdoor, the results can be displayed as a color-coded route.
FORCING FEATURES
Nemo Handy supports the following forcing features: channel lock, scrambling code lock,
system/band lock, cell barring, and assisted handover with handover suppression. Note that
the selection depends on the technology that the mobile is connected to. With Channel Lock,
the Handy mobile can be locked to a GSM channel. With the Scrambling Code Lock, the
mobile can be locked to a carrier and a scrambling code. With the System Lock, the mobile
can be locked to one of the systems and bands: UMTS, GSM, GSM 850, GSM 900, GSM
1800, and GSM 1900. With Cell Barring, you can set the Handy mobile to access only the
cells that are barred, only the cells that are not barred, or both. The Status view will display
the status of each forcing feature.

Nemo Handy offers support for manually initiated handovers from the current serving cell to a
selected target cell, after which subsequent handovers can be suppressed. In effect, this
makes it possible to lock the terminal to a specific, selected cell.
SCRIPTS
It is possible to use script files to run measurements with Nemo Handy. When a script is used,
Nemo Handy makes voice/video calls, data transfers, etc. automatically. You can use scripts
for voice and video calls, HTTP/FTP packet data uploads/downloads, HTML/WAP browsing,
SMS/MMS messages, emails, and ping. You can also create conditional, system-triggered
scripts with indefinite wait periods that end when a specific system becomes active or with
triggers that initiate a voice call when a specific system becomes active. Scripts can be
created and edited with Nemo Handy’s built-in script editor, or with the PC software Nemo
Handy Script Editor. When the Autologging option is activated, Nemo Handy will start logging
automatically when a script is started.

CUSTOMIZING DATA VIEWS

All Nemo Handy measurement data displays are fully user-configurable. Views can be
created and edited with the Nemo Handy Configuration Editor tool included in the Nemo
Handy package. All display settings are stored in an .xml file.
NOTIFICATIONS
Nemo Handy offers a set of default audio notifications that can be used to notify the user of
important measurement events. The creation and editing of custom notification messages is
easy with the Nemo Handy Configuration Editor: the custom messages entered into the
