CFAC Pen & Ink Class

Emma Karpinski

Fall 2017 Session I

Lesson Plan

Objective: To teach the techniques of mark-making with different pen and ink tools, as well as
the uses of ink itself. When taught how to utilize ink, artists can create detailed and captivating
works of art, whether it be portraits, landscapes, still life, or abstract pieces. Artists can also
learn how to add watercolor into pen and ink works to provide color in a way that unifies a
work of art.

Class 1, September 13: Mark-Making

The first class will focus on the different styles of mark-making that can be done with a
fountain pen when dipped into ink. There will be several demonstrations on how to hatch,
cross hatch, stipple, and scumble, then artists will be able to practice using each to show
texture and value. After using each technique, artists will be able to combine techniques or
make up their own way of mark-making to create abstract works of art.

Class 2, September 20: Cross-Contour Still Life

Artists will learn and practice the use of cross-contouring with pen & ink, then will choose an
object to recreate with the technique.

Class 3, September 27: Ink in Motion

Instead of using the ink with a pen, we will instead treat it like a painting medium. First, artists
will learn how to dilute ink to change its value and will practice making gradients, then they
will have the opportunity to combine ink washes with mark-making. We will small abstract
pieces by painting with ink, then adding in small linear details, this time using micron pens.
This will also be a time to experiment with colored ink via colored micron pens. Colorful
details can be added into works.
Class 4, October 4: Mixed Media I

We will begin working on a piece that combines mark-making, ink washes, and even some
color. Artists will be able to work with any image they’d like (portrait, landscape, still life, or
abstract). The first steps done today will be the mark-making. Sketching out where objects or
shapes will be with pencil will be done prior to any ink work. The general layout will be
mapped out.

Class 5, October 11: Mixed Media II

We will continue to work on the mixed media project, finishing up with mark-making with the
fountain pen or micron pens, and plan to move onto ink washes. Ink washes are great for
shadows, skies, water, adding contrast, and more.

Class 6, October 18: Mixed Media III

Artists will finish up with washes and see if they need to go over any of their layers with ink
pens again to define marks. Watercolor will be added for a pop of color that catches the eye,
as well as line work done with the colored micron pens. Any finishing touches will be put on
pieces, as well.
