 Chamaedorea elegans

Chamaedorea elegans crece a menudo en interiores, y era especialmente popular

en la época victoriana. Es originario de las selvas tropicales de América Latina en
México y Guatemala. Crece un máximo de dos metros de altura con un crecimiento
muy lento, y prefiere moderada a alta humedad. Puede ser cultivado con poca luz,
pero crece mejor con luz brillante indirecta.
La chamaedorea elegans es una de las palmeras más utilizadas para interiores,
tanto por su tamaño, que no es demasiado grande, como por la facilidad de su
mantenimiento, aunque llega a medir los 2 metros de altura. Pertenece a la familia
de las arecaceae y tiene su origen en México, Guatemala y Belice.
Posee un único tallo del que salen ramas con hojas alargadas y estrechas. Tras
crecer lentamente puede alcanzar los dos metros de altura. Las flores, de color
amarillo o anaranjado, aparecen durante todo el año, aunque no son demasiado
vistosas. Además, crecen pequeños frutos esféricos de color negro.
Esta palmera se reproduce con facilidad a partir de semillas o por división. A la hora
de plantarla, disponemos de dos opciones: bien en una maceta en interiores, que
es lo más habitual en esta especie de chamaedorea, o bien en el exterior, como en
mi caso que una vez más gracias al clima puedo disfrutarla en mi jardín. Eso sí, en
climas más fríos no aguanta!. Si la palmera la queremos tener en exterior
buscaremos un emplazamiento a la sombra o semi sombra, donde su follaje lucirá
un tono verde intenso. Si está constantemente expuesta al sol, corremos el riesgo
de que las hojas adquieran un color amarillento, cosa que me ocurre... tendré que
cambiarla de ubicación.
El suelo de esta palmera ha de ser una mezcla de turba y tierra negra, y tendrá
un buen drenaje, para evitar los encharcamientos. Asimismo, ha de ser ligeramente
ácido y rico en nutrientes.
Como a todas las plantas tropicales, le gusta la humedad. Para ello, el riego es
necesario, aunque no debe ser muy abundante. Un exceso de líquido puede
provocar que el ejemplar se pudra. Para un óptimo desarrollo, conviene incorporar
al sustrato fertilizante líquido, especialmente durante el verano.
Si la hemos cultivado en el interior, a medida que va creciendo, hemos de
trasplantarla anualmente a recipientes de mayor tamaño. Si en una misma maceta
hemos cultivado varios ejemplares, tendremos cuidado al tratar las raíces, para no
dañarlas ni separarlas.
Altura:
De 1.8 a 3 metros cuando es silvestre, sin embargo crece menos cultivándole.
Cuidado:
Se puede cultivar en macetas para interior o exterior, tolera una sombra ligera,
aunque afecta el crecimiento.
