Personal Statement
My name is Rina Febrina Sarie, I graduated from Department of English Language Teaching,
Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Sampoerna School of Education, Indonesia. I
wrote a thesis entitled ‘The Perception of Pre-Service Teachers towards The Implementation
of Microteaching Lesson Study: A Study on Pre-Service Teachers of English Language
Teaching Department Cohort 2010.’ This research discusses about pre-service teachers’
perception in implementing Microteaching Lesson Study (MLS). It also investigated the
challenges that pre-service teachers face and examined how pre-service teachers overcome
the challenges in implementing MLS especially designing collaborative lesson plan, carrying
out lesson, reflecting and evaluating the teaching.

I choose to take postgraduate in education because I believe that education is a vital

investment for human and economic development and is influenced by the environment
within which it exists. Therefore, to study Education especially Teaching English to Speakers
of Other Languages (TESOL), not only that it is necessary to be very precise to prepare the
qualified language teachers in different educational settings, but it is also important to
develop professional working across learning context to lead learning communities.
Furthermore, I have also attained many understanding during my study in Education
especially English Language Teaching such as language teaching curriculum, teaching
methodology, research method, and teaching English for young learners.

Now, I am an English teacher in Singapore Indonesian School, South Sumatera, Indonesia. I

am teaching primary students for almost one year. My experiences in teaching started when I
was in undergraduate program and still continue until now. Therefore, the total of teaching
experience that I have is about five years.

I actively join many organizations during my study and also participate in national and
international conference. I am the founder of Laskar Junior Community and responsible for
program and project designing. This community aims to build children character, skills and
their multiple intelligences in early young age. Besides that, my passion in education leads
me to be active in conducting the research and presenting them in international conference
such as International Conference on English Language Teaching (ICELT), Malaysia, 9 th
Annual CamTESOL International conference, Phnom Penh, Cambodia, 15th UNESCO-
APEID International Conference, Indonesia.

I am highly motivated to pursue my studies in Master of TESOL at Monash University. By

taking this course, I hope it provides me with a rewarding experience in a lively intellectual
and social community. In addition, it also extends my professional opportunities and gain the
competence and confidence to contribute to the development of English language teaching in
my local or wider context.

My career objective after completing my TESOL program is to return to Indonesia to seek a

lecturer position in one of university where I can apply what I have learned from your
TESOL program. I will join an academic association of English teaching. I will consciously
guide my English teaching with the specific TESOL principles to make my practice effective
and fruitful. Meanwhile, I will do extensive research work to enrich the studies in English
Language Teaching issue which is still lack of concern in Indonesia. I consider going to
Australia because of its good education development for English Language Teaching. The
needs of Indonesia for teachers, lecturers and researchers in education is very high, so the
career opportunities to work in various sectors of education wide open.

In Indonesia, qualified teachers or lecturers and researchers are still urgently needed,
especially in relation for the ASEAN Economic Community by 2015. Therefore, I have the
opportunity to be a career as a professional lecturer or researcher.
