The viking Raid on lindisfarne

Today, the story of Scotland is unknown to young generations. In order to improve the
knowledge of students, we decided to talk about an important event which happened in our
country and turned the tide. Indeed, the Viking Raid on Lindisfarne, marked the history of
Scotland.

To begin, Lindisfarne is on an island called Holy

Island; it was isolated from the rest, because there is a
Christian monastery which was the main religion in
Scotland at this age. The monks just live away from other
people in order to only focus on their faith. They had their
own field to cultivate and feed themselves.

The monastery was an easy target. It contained a lot of treasures, and monks didn’t
have weapons, so they couldn’t protect themselves, and they weren’t guarded by soldiers. The
bad weather gave them a bad feeling about this foreboding, they believed that the lightings
were dragons. A monk called Alcuin blamed God for sending the Vikings. He thought that the
cause was the bad actions of some of their brothers.

It is why the Vikings came on the 6th of June 793 AD, to attack the monastery and
stole their goods. They travelled to the island by wooden longships and used paddles to sail. It
was easy to drive and was fast. As they reached the land, they
started by burning buildings, and steal the treasures. They murdered
many innocent monks and spread fear all around the island. The
Vikings were pagans; therefore they didn’t have any respect for the
Christians. They reduced some of them to slavery, humiliated them
and even drowned them in the sea.

This event was not an isolated act. They had been several other attacks against
Christian monasteries by Vikings. It influenced the future of Scotland, and led to the country
which we know today.
