Learning Activities
1. As a whole class, we will introduce new vocabulary that is used in the book, Pancho Rabbit. We
will have an interactive activity that includes photos and a definition of the selected vocabulary.
Here is the list of vocabulary words:
a. Aguamiel: a drink made from the sap of the maguey plant
b. El Norte: “The North”- the USA
c. Fiesta: party
d. Mijo: my son
e. Mochila: backpack
f. Mole: a sweet and spicy sauce
g. Musica: music
h. Papel picado: perforated paper
i. Rancho: ranch
j. Senor/Senora: Mr/Mrs
k. Murky: something that is hard to see through clearly
l. Outrun: to run faster than
m. Harvest: something that you pick and gather
2. After the vocab activity, we will have a quick, whole class, discussion about immigration and
why people sometimes have to move or leave their home. We will pass out a worksheet for
students to write down their initial definition of immigration, which we will use to assess their
understanding. Some questions we may use to guide the discussion are:
. Have you, or anyone you know, had to move before?
a. What are some reasons someone might have to move for?
b. How does that make you feel?
3. Next, we will begin a read aloud of the book, Pancho Rabbit. We will stop and pause at the
vocabulary words that we used in the first activity to see if students remember the definitions. We
will also stop to check for comprehension throughout the story.
4. After finishing the read aloud of the story, we will introduce two stations to the students, one
math and one ELA.
. For the ELA station, students will be creating a piece of concrete poetry. The students will pick
either the shape of a coyote or a rabbit to trace on their own paper, representing the rabbit and coyote
from the story. Students will describe the characteristics of the character and use their words to write
around the shape, creating concrete poetry. If there is time, students can share their poem with the group.
a. For the math station, students will participate in an activity where they imagine they will go on a
journey similar to Pancho Rabbit. There will be a list of items the students will choose from to bring on
their journey. The catch it, the students will only have “$10” to spend, and each item on the list costs
money. Students will be tasked with choosing any of the listed items that they would want to bring with
them if they went on a journey. However, students cannot spend more than the $10. They will use their
addition skills to choose items that add up to no more than $10. Along with this, students will draw
pictures of the items they choose to bring along on their journey on their worksheet. The list of items
students will choose from will be:
i.Backpack………. $3.50
ii.Mole…………… $2.00
iii.Tortillas…………$2.00
iv.Aguamiel………..$1.50
v.Compass………...$2.50
vi.Jacket……………$3.00
5. After all students have finished both stations, the entire class will come back together for a
discussion again. We will address immigration again, and students will be asked these questions:
. How does the story, Pancho Rabbit, represent immigration?
a. How does immigration make you feel?
b. What is something new you learned about immigration?
6. Students will turn in their worksheet to us, which will we use to assess if students learned new
material and grasped the concept of immigration.
