 There are many things that are not quite clear about how countries interact and how their

relationship can affect the world we live in. There are many forms and theories that can help us

understand how states relate. We see how the relationship between the United States and North

Korea is completely different from now and years before. Well, more than forty years have

passed since a leader of North Korea was reunited with the Unites States (the Trump-Kim

summit was the first time a US president and North Korean leader met face to face). It has not

been long since President Donald Trump and Leader Kim Jong Un met at Singapore on June 12,

2018, to make accomplish the “Joint Statement” and make history. But now let's see what

process these two leaders need go through to be able to realize the agreement that they had

signed in Singapore. The realist paradigm helps to understand what conflicts these two countries

may have.

The following “Joint Statement” says, the United States and the DPRK committed to

establishing new U.S.–DPRK relations in accordance with the desire of the peoples of the two

countries for peace and prosperity (Donald Trump,Kim Jong Un, 2018).

1. The United States and the DPRK will join their efforts to build a lasting and

stable peace regime on the Korean Peninsula.

2. Reaffirming April 27, 2018, Panmunjom Declaration, the DPRK commits to

working toward complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

3. The United States and the DPRK commit to recovering POW/MIA remains,

including the immediate repatriation of those already identified.

Trump,Kim Jong Un, 2018).

 On December 12, 1985, North Korea also agreed to the NPT which is the Nuclear

Nonproliferation Treaty and did not complete all the requirements that were needed to complete

the safety rules for the Atomic Energy Agency IAEA. Which it seems that North Korea has been

doing peace treaty and denuclearization plenty of times that it almost feels like a repetition or

pattern. Even though Kim Jong Un was very aggressive in threatening the United States by

sending missiles that were capable to reach Alaska. Kim Jong Un is the leader of North Korea

and his father was Ko Young-hee. Kim Jon-Il was elected to be the supreme leader in 2011.

They have had a record of not being able to fulfill the "Joint Statement." In 1993 his grandfather

agreed to "work towards complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula (Sanger,2018)."

Despite that Kim Jong Un in the encounter between the United States, After Kim sent an

invitation to President Donald Trump. Last ten months was his last missile lounge said Narang in

the article “North Korea is a nuclear power. get used to it. New York Times”; according to her it

is a sign of willingness (Jacinto, 2006-2018).

President Donald Trump was elected on January 20, 2017 (Biography, 2018). After the

many tweets between Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un about “War Games” and bulling each

other Trump stated, “I think and believe he wants to make a deal.” Just after they finished their

meeting in Singapore Trump said “I trust Kim and we will be stopping the war games. The war

games end since they are tremendously expensive (Bearret,2018).”

Regarding the connection to Realism, North Korea’s behavior of sending threatening

tweets and missiles to the Unites States it seems to try to intimidate the U.S. Which it seems that

looking at the deterrence theory which means that is a use of threat to punish another actor.

Therefore, we can see that his action might also be used as some sort of “Barging chip of time of
desperation” and having a type of internal crisis says Mike Eoyang a national security analyst

(Jacinto, 2006-2018).

Such as National Interest will come to place in realist perspective because there might be

dirty move behind North Korea curtain. Which he might be playing psychological games with

President Donald Trump. Now, the CNN effect can also influence in blocking and making it

more challenging for the two leaders to accomplish the summit; People might say that he was not

a good person and there is no way we should have a peace treaty because he used to

systematically imprison and abuses his own people. That could persuade Trump to change his

deal with Kim Jong Un (Jacinto, 2006-2018).

On the other hand, in North Korea Kim Jong Un’s father and grandfather had always

influenced the people of the DPRK to think that American is the enemy and that we should

destroy them. This is an example of using Latent Public Opinion since Kim could communicate

of how bad Americans are and use the population to reverse course , the Prospect theory can

explain that North Korea is willing to keep his regime, country and power (C.W.Pevehouse,

2014),which can explain how it could really hit the people of North Korea and cause chaos.

Individual Unmotivated Bias explains the past histories it seems that he will react similarly to the

previews leaders because the previews leader wants to keep the Kim Jong Un regime.

Finally, it seems that is going to be difficult for Kim Jong Un and President Donald

Trump to complete the goals of this summit. There are going to be ups and downs. Hopefully

with a realism perspective it will be easier to predict how these two powers will act.
