Project Title: Neural network sparsification for speeding up test time execution via weight & neuron pruning
Github Link: https://github.com/codeitankit/Weights-and-Unit-Neuron-Pruning

The aim of this project is to analyze the decrease in classification accuracy for a neural network [4 hidden layers: 1000,
1000, 500, 200] vs sparsification performed via weight and neuron pruning. The final result is the development of a 90%
neuron sparsified model at the expense of only ~2% classification accuracy with an overall decrease in test execution
time by a factor of ~7. Recovery analysis of accuracy for the sparsified network was also performed.
• Weight pruning: deleted k% connections b/w consecutive hidden layers by ranking them on the basis of magnitudes
of weights in the weight matrix, k = [0, 25, 50, 60, 70, 90, 95, 97, 99]
• Neuron pruning: deleted k% neurons in each hidden layer (except the last) by ranking them on the basis of L2-norm
of incoming weights
• [Sparsity, test-time speedup, loss in accuracy, Retraining] = [90%, 7.06x, 1.94%, Yes]
= [50%, 2.4x, 6.86%, No]

3. Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, South Korea July 2018 – October 2018
Supervisor: Prof. Shuping Xiong, Human Factors and Ergonomics Lab

Project Title: Developing a unified deep learning approach for classification of cross-country(XC) skiing techniques

This project aimed at developing a classification model for classifying the classical and skating XC-skiing techniques
simultaneously that could be deployed in real-time by professional coaches for training amateur skiers. We utilized 17
Inertial Measurement Units’ (each IMU has 1 accelerometer, gyroscope and magnetometer) data of 4 Korean Olympic
skiers collected on winter Olympic flat and natural (uphill and downhill) courses in Pyeongchang County, South Korea.

• Framed the classification problem as a multi-variate sequence classification task and developed a CNN-LSTM
based deep learning classification model - first research work that classified both classic and skating
techniques simultaneously
• Trained the model on flat course data & tested on natural course data: achieved state of the art accuracy of 91.1%;
first research work to conclusively eliminate the need for collecting natural course data for training –
which is extremely difficult to procure
• Established that only the angular velocity data of 5 gyroscope sensors (on both legs, hands and pelvis) out of the
total 51 sensors is the optimal configuration for classification; first research work to comprehensively evaluate
various combinations & propose an optimal configuration of sensors on which future studies can be
based

Supervisor: Prof. Wheyming Song, Applied Probability and Statistics Lab

Project Title: Economic design of variables-based acceptance sampling plans with rectifying inspection based on
advanced process capability index Cpmk

The goal of this project was to design an economic model of variables-based single acceptance sampling plans with
rectifying inspection for the industries that require very high standards of quality control, e.g.: semiconductor
manufacturing. We developed the sampling plans based on advanced process capability index Cpmk and proved their
statistical and economic superiority as compared to previously existing plans based on Cpk.

• First to propose and design single variables-based acceptance sampling plans based on Cpmk - considering
process-yield and quality loss simultaneously
• Framed the optimization problem as a constrained non-linear optimization problem with total quality cost as
the objective function and producer’s and consumer’s risk as the constraints
• Established new state of the art by decreasing the cost of quality control by 8%, sample size required for
inspection by 7.8% and size of confidence interval for the process mean by 25% as compared to previous state of
the art plans based on Cpk

5. Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, India February 2018 – April 2018

Supervisor: Prof. Pradeep Kumar Jha, Department of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering

Project Title: A comprehensive study & ranking of barriers relevant to the adoption of Industry 4.0 in Indian industries

The purpose of this study is to evaluate quantitatively the roles of various barriers and to find potential drivers necessary
for the adoption of principles of Industry 4.0 in the Indian context.

• Performed extensive literature review to identify 10 potential barriers; conducted surveys among 10 industry experts
to get their subjective opinion on the factors that are drivers and that are being driven in the form of a 10*10 cause and
effect matrix

• Implemented DEMATEL (Decision Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory) theory over the subjective opinions
of experts and plotted digraph (directional graphs) to identify the top 3 driving factors and 7 driven factors
