ABSTRACT

The tardy behavior of a student can also negatively affect the academic performance in

school. Arriving late to school can also mean that students miss out on activities designed to their

lessons.’ Tardy Behavior’ is the term ascribed to students who suffer from tardiness, which is

defined as the condition of not being on time. The descriptive research on which this study based

explored the impact of tardiness in academic performance among the Grade 11 STEM and

TECHVOC students in La Consolacion College of Novaliches. There were at least 65

respondents answered the surveys regarding the impact of tardiness in their academic

performance and the possible solution to prevent it. The study found out that most of the students

agree on having MWF and TTHS schedule to prevent them from being tardy. Students agreed

that during rainy seasons it would be fair if time will be extended from 7:15-7:30 before flag

ceremony will start, this will help them to decrease the numbers of late every morning. Students

also agreed that tardiness caused them to miss a lot of important lessons and sometimes it cause

them to lost their focus resulting for them to be greatly affected on their academic performance.

Based on the findings, the researchers suggest that all students, particularly to those students who

are not as academically strong, to be informed about the importance influence of class attendance

on academic performance with the use of APPLY PROGRAM (Always Practice Productivity to

Lighten Your life). This program aims to have a proper time management and be motivated on

academic performance.

Chapter 1

This chapter presents the introduction, background of the study, theoretical framework,

conceptual paradigm, statement of the problem, hypothesis, significance of the study, and the

scope and limitation of the research.

I. INTRODUCTION

A study by Hammill Institute on Disabilities (Caldarella, Christensen, Young & Densley,

2011), the researchers found that students who are frequently late to school often miss out on

important opening announcements and academic activities. Teachers can become frustrated as

late students disrupt instruction, often requiring reteaching of what they have missed. Tardy

behavior can also negatively affect the overall classroom environment,’ the study says. One of

the most important aspects of a school is that it is organized, scheduled and predictable. For the

students will depend on the structure of the day. In La Consolacion College of Novaliches, the

flag ceremony happens every Monday to Friday that will start at 7:15 in the morning. The

students are required to arrive at school on or before the said time. They know where they have

to be and when. The main purpose in attending to school is to learn and that schedules are in

place precisely to help them focus on that learning. But when students are repeatedly tardy, these

routines are disrupted. Students who are often late are suffering more settling in and mastering

routines. It will cause negative impact on their learning because those students who are arriving

late receive hours of instruction and it will waste their time, which should be their class time.

Arriving late to school can also mean that students miss out on activities designed to

build connections with their peers, potentially impacting their social interactions and creating a

greater sense of alienation from their classmates. For when a student continuously shows up late

in class, other students can be distracted. Part of having education is learning to be responsible.

3
The school experience teaches students how to meet expectations. They need to learn to follow

schedules, obey rules, complete assignments and keep track of their materials. Learning

responsibility in school is a precursor to functioning in the working world, as noted by William

Kirby in his 2010 article "School Attendance Tied to Academic Success”.

II. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

According to the research, lateness to school started long time ago, everywhere in a way

that cannot be controlled in recent time. The problem of lateness has eaten deep into Nigeria

children the problem of pupil’s lateness to school has now turn to national problem. Lateness

merely means arriving after expected time. Oxford advanced learners dictionary defined lateness

as arriving after the expected arrange or usual time. It is after the right, fixed, usual or expected

time; therefore, lateness is the opposite of early. Children commonly miss their school or coming

lately because of their usual habits, such as waking up late due to laziness: rushing of undone

assignment, unprepared bath, breakfast or meals, clothes, their pack lunch etc. and waiting for

companions or friends coming to school the bus is late; and sometimes because of some

problems in their parent that affects them and interest in coming to school seeing they’re with

misunderstandings. A financial support, kids like having many delightful possessions. They

would be and seeing their classmates with something they don’t have or sometimes they are

ashamed of coming to school. A traffic congestion is another too. According to the recent study

by a Serbia-based research firm, revealed that the Philippines ranked ninth in having a deplorable

traffic situation in the world. In the number collated data on the traffic situation of 88 countries

for its traffic Index, it shows that the Philippines obtained a traffic index of Bangladesh, Jordan

and Iran, the Philippines also ranked fourth in having the worst traffic situation in Asia.

4
III. THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

This section presents and discusses theories that are applicable to the research topic.

These theories are help to explain the concept behind the research and establish the relationship

to the research’s variables.

In 1905, Albert Einstein proposed a theory of General Relativity which states that

massive objects cause a distortion in space-time, which is felt as gravity. General relativity

predicted that the space-time around Earth would be not only warped but also twisted by the

planet's rotation.

Later on, based from the idea of Albert Einstein, a San Francisco journalist, critic and

author named Gerald Nachman, come up a theory and that was the “Theory of Relative

Tardiness” that laid out from his books on the Golden age of Radio. He stated the following

reasons why people are tardy in the morning; First, because of their internal clocks that made

them move slowly or not at all, second, because of the curvature of the earth and third their

inability to get off the phone. In extreme cases, some people have no internal clocks at all, that is

why they experienced chronic tardiness.

5
IV. CONCEPTUAL PARADIGM

• Each strand has a specific number of respondents. In

STEM (UNITY) has 20 respondents, STEM (HONESTY)
INPUT
has 19 respondents and TECH-VOC (COURAGE) has
26 respondents.

• Initial Survey - Collecting data to know what are the

five main causes why students came late in school.
PROCESS
• Resurvey - Collecting data to determine the possible
solutions to avoid or prevent tardiness

OUTPUT • Create a program that would motivate students to go

to school on time.

V. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aimed to know the Impact of Tardiness in Academic Performance among Grade

11 STEM and TECHVOC students of La Consolacion College Novaliches S.Y. 2018-2019. It

sought answer to the following questions:

1.) What are the common causes of tardiness?

2.) What are the negative effects brought by tardiness in the academic performance among

the Grade 11 STEM and TECHVOC students?

3.) What would be the possible solutions to lessen the tardiness among the Grade 11 STEM

and TECHVOC students?

6
VI. HYPOTHESIS

 Tardiness to a lot of factors or causes. One of that is being laziness and lack of sleep

because of going late to bed and waking up late in the next morning. The distance of

home and school it takes long time. This causes of tardiness will lead to serious effect to

Grade 11 STEM and TECHVOC students in La Consolacion College of Novaliches.

 It affects the academic performance and paper works. It may also affect your classmates

because if you are late and then you will enter the classroom you will distract your other

classmates who are listening to the discussions.

 To lessen the tardiness or the number of lates of Grade 11 STEM and TECHVOC, the

help of parents is needed for them to be motivated to go earlier in school. The school’s

regulation will also practice them for having penalties to avoid students to think that

being late is just normal or right.

VII. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study is conducted to benefit the following:

SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS AND STAFFS. This study will help them to formulate some

preventive measures to help the students from being tardy.

TEACHERS. The given data would guide the teachers on what to do with the students that are

always late in class. The teachers would be able to understand why some students are always

arrived late in class.

PARENTS. The parents would encourage their children and help them to be punctual and

motivate their children to come early in school.

7
STUDENTS. The results will provide the students with some knowledge regarding the tardiness

of the students. It will give knowledge to the students what are the most common reason why

some students are always arrived late in the class. At the end of this study, students would finally

know what are the possible effects of tardiness to the students and society.

FUTURE RESEARCHERS. This research will be useful for the researchers who would want to

know what are the reasons why students are being tardy and what are the possible effects of

tardiness to the students and society.

VIII. SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

This study was focused on the impact of tardiness in academic performances of the

Senior High School students. With this Study, the researchers have chosen the Grade 11 students

of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), Information and

Communication Technology (ICT), and Home Economics (HE) of La Consolacion College

Novaliches for the School Year 2018-2019, with a specific number of respondents in each strand.

In STEM (UNITY) has 20 respondents, STEM (HONESTY) has 19 respondents and TECHVOC

(COURAGE) has 26 respondents. The numbers of selected respondents are about 65 overall.

In determining the impact of tardiness in academic performances of the Senior High, selected

student-respondents was the focus of this research. The researchers considered working on this

study to find out what could be the factors of tardiness that could affect (at least 5 factors) to the

academic performances of the said students-respondents, by means of initial survey. The

information needed will be gathered using the checklist style research-made questionnaires. All

information and conclusions drawn from this study were obtained only to this particular group.

1. Analysis on Students’ Late-Coming Factors in Selected Secondary Schools in

Zaria: Implications for Educational Managers.

By Bubakare M. Jumar Bashir A. Maina Vera Rosemary Ankoma-Sey, Institute of Educational,

Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria Department of Educational Foundations and

Curriculum, Educational Administration and Planning, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria,

College of Distance Education, University of Cape Coast, Ghana (2015)

Abstract

This study attempted to answer the following research questions among others: Has

gender any relation with students’ late-coming to school? Has age any relation with students’

late-coming to school? Do senior students come to school late than junior? Four secondary

schools were selected for the study. Sample of sixty students’ late comers were administered

with the questionnaire within a period of two weeks. The instrument was partly adopted, while

the other part was self-constructed. The instrument was validated by expert in educational

administration and language. Data collected was analyzed using simple percentages and

frequencies for easy interpretation and understanding. The results indicate that late coming to

school is higher among female students, those within the ages of 16-20 are frequent late comers

and senior among others. It was recommended that parents (especially mothers) should reduce

engaging female students with home activities especially in the morning; school administrators

and teachers should increase effort on counseling strategies to adolescent students due to their

10
change in perception and school rules. Keywords: Educational managers, Late-coming, School

system

Synthesis

Based on the study, all stake holders in education must consider students late coming to

school as a major variable or factor for the success of quality education. Late coming to school

by students could be as a result in a factor, thus teachers and school administrators ought to work

hard with the view to reducing the problem. Punctuality of a child to school could change him to

become a better individual who uses his time judiciously in future career. Reduction of students

late coming may serve as a means for the reduction of mass failure in national examinations.

More commitment on the side of the students to education is needed to better their academic

performance.

The findings of the study suggest that education managers are expected to include

societal orientation as part of school annual program of activities. This will go along in reducing

causes of students’ late coming to school. The orientation could be though parents-teachers

association. It is worthy of note that the success of every school manager is not a beautiful

program plan but also the relevance of the plan in solving educational problems. This also agrees

with the new trend of collaborative effort among education stakeholders, with the view to

increasing education successes. Education managers should among other things forecast

students’ time utilization as a factor for school objective achievement parameter.

2. A Review of Factors Associated with Student’s Lateness Behavior and Dealing

Strategies.

By Marwan Zaid Bataineh Department of Psychology, College of Education, King Saud

University, P.O. BOX 2458, Riyadh 11451, Saudi Arabia (2014)

Abstract

This study aimed to systematically review studies that investigate factors associated with

student’s lateness behavior and dealing strategies. There were at least 24 papers and reports

reviewed regarding lateness behavior. The related journal papers and reports on factor associated

with student’s lateness behavior and dealing strategies were downloaded with cut off limit from

1991 to 2013. The papers and reports were then analyzed and organized according to the

definitions of lateness and various factors associated with student’s lateness behavior and dealing

strategies. However, the finding of this study indicates that there was conclusive evidence from

the reviewed literature regarding student’s lateness behavior, yet the number of articles

supporting it was small. Finally, conclusion of the study indicates the dealing with disruptive

behavior in the classroom is one of the most challenging aspects of being a professor and the

study recommended further investigations and analysis could be beneficial to obtain a complete

vision of patterns of lateness behavior and coping strategies for the student. Keywords:

systematically review, lateness behavior, dealing strategies.

Synthesis

This paper investigates about the factors associated with student's lateness behaviour and

strategies. There is numerous understanding why students are being late in the class like traffic

jam, parent's care or other responsibilities that prevent them being punctual in attending a class.

12
If the student's come to class late there is a possibility that can interrupt the class, it can distract

other students and it also led to get a low grade. ETC’s (2009) reported that the attendance and

punctuality policy clearly state that “regular and punctual attendance is of paramount importance

in ensuring that all students have full access to the curriculum. Valuable learning time is lost

when students are absent or late". Therefore, there is a high possibility that if the student

becomes late he/she may not acquire valuable learning. That is why students should attend all

learning and teaching sessions. Based on this study there are 18 factors associated with student’s

lateness: Poor Organization, going late to bed, Family background, Cultural background, College

factors, Illnesses, there is no consequence of being late, Fatigue, Emotional Challenges,

Challenge the instructor's authority, Economic Influences, Maturity, Routine, Beginning of class

in not important, Logistical reasons, Students' expectation about the instructors, Students

variables, Instructors late. Also, the paper also studies the dealing strategies which can be used to

improve students lateness behaviour: (1) Provide full information in course syllabus and policies

regarding class attendance and tardiness, (2) If you have noticed problems with classes in the

past (for example, students who repeatedly are late for an early morning class), present the

current class with a list of the issues and “negotiate” a consensus on how these issues will be

dealt with this time, (3) Ask yourself if you have done anything to contribute to the issue, Talk

with colleagues about similar situations and how they handled them, (4) Deal with any

significant issues of disruption in private (your office with the door open). Dealing with an issue

in front of others can cause both the students and the instructor to be affected, (5) Put yourself in

the student’s shoes and try to see what is the motivation behind this disruption issue, etc.

Lateness among students is persistent and important issue and it is one of the most challenging

aspects as a professor to deal with such behaviour in the classroom. In addition, instructors

13
should be more realistic about the situation and helped the students to prevent being late in class.

Moreover, lateness could affect students’ performance and lead to low grade averages. Weade

stated that students have a better attendance and punctuality will receive a higher-grade point

average. While students with poor attendance and punctuality gets a lower grade point average.

3. Absenteeism and Lateness Among Secondary School Students in Nigeria:

Profiling Causes and Solution (2008)

By: Enamiroro Oghuvbu

Abstract

Absenteeism is major and continuous administrative problem among secondary school

students in developing countries. Since the problem is to 70% student home based, there is need

for the student/parent to help identify and proffer solutions to this quality disturbing problems

that could lead to students’ dropout from school. identified illness, permitted leave, voluntary

absenteeism, as common forms of absenteeism. Identified causes of absenteeism include: illness,

financial hardship, age, social class, geographical area, truancy and institutional influence.

School related factors, such as; teachers’ attitude, poor administration, high cost of education,

illness due to weather condition such as cold, temperature grey days causes absenteeism among

students. Harsh school rules and regulations could cause absenteeism i.e. corporal punishment;

families where children prepare themselves for school and parent to work. Truancy among

students is caused by school-related reasons. Bullied by school staff, boredom, dislike of teachers

and avoidance of tests. These are without parents’ knowledge School authorities authorized

absence for ailments, medical and death in the family. Parent particularly in rural areas keep their

children at home for domestic activities on market and community festival days. In crises areas,

student absence from school for safety reasons. Lateness is common among female students than

14
male students. This is as a result of their involvement in domestic activities by their parent.

Distance to school, school discipline, family background and school location are among causes

of lateness among secondary school students.

Synthesis

The study shows the causes of being frequent absentee and being late in school some of

the reason are as follows: lack of transportation parent poor financial condition, inability of

parent to provide instructional materials and teachers non-commitment to the teaching of their

subjects as causes of absenteeism. Going late to bed because of watching films and home

movies, resulting into wake up late in the morning, distance to school and keeping friends who

are not students are causes of lateness among secondary school students in Nigeria. The result of

this study showed that both the school authority and parents are involved in the factor that

generates absenteeism and lateness among students. There is no significant difference between

the views of principals, teachers, parents and students in the identified causes and possible

solutions to the problems of absenteeism and lateness among secondary school students in

Nigeria as revealed in this study. Also, the causes of absenteeism are not significantly related to

causes of lateness. The study revealed that only 2.94% of the causes of lateness influences

absenteeism that is students are not absent from school because of distance wake up late or

keeping friends who are not students. However, poor parent financial status could result to

lateness and absenteeism.

15
4. Lateness: A major problem confronting school administrators in Delta State,

Nigeria

By: Dafiaghor, Kose Famous Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of

Education, Delta State University, Abraka, Delta State, Nigeria. (2011)

Abstract

The human component. They insinuate that “it is easier to manage even animals than to

manage human beings” (Nakpodia, 2006; Peretomode, 1991; Peretomode, 2001; Ubogu, 2004;

Emore, 2005; Ukoshi, 2004). Thus, in the school system, the school head, which is usually the

headmaster/headmistress or the principal, is confronted with numerous problems posed by staff

and/or students. These problems include: sleeping on duty, negative attitude to tasks, lack of

motivation to tasks, sexual harassment, theft, quarrelling, malice, jealousy, envy, absenteeism,

lateness, etc. But Lauby(2009) stated clearly that: “As a Human Resource professional, I have

dealt with plethora of employee issues: sleeping on the job, theft, sexual harassment… but I have

found over the years, there is one issue that plagues managers more than all these other issues

combine, attendance and punctuality. That is, people not showing up at all, people not showing

up on time”. It could thus be deduced from the above excerpt that in the school system, which is

the focus of this paper, both staff’s and students’/pupils’ lateness to school pose the greatest

problems to school administrators in Delta State.

Synthesis

No doubt that we are the most difficult to manage among the other components of

organization because we have a variety of behavior. The truth is that, some of us don't have a

discipline. We don't have a discipline to manage our time in doing our obligations and

16
responsibilities. There are lots of author have posited as a matter of fact that it is easier to

manage the financial and material components of any organization than to manage the human

component and some researchers insinuate that it is easier to manage even animals than to

manage human beings. In this study, the staffs and/or students confronted the school head, which

is usually the headmaster/headmistress or the principal with regards to the numerous problems in

the school. The common problems that present within the school are; sleeping on duty, negative

attitude to tasks, lack of motivation to tasks, sexual harassment, theft, quarrelling, malice,

jealousy, envy, absenteeism, lateness, etc. But according to Lauby, he stated clearly that: “As a

Human Resource professional, I have dealt with plethora of employee issues: sleeping on the job,

theft, sexual harassment, but I have found over the years, there is one issue that plagues

managers more than all these other issues combine, attendance and punctuality. That is, people

not showing up at all, people not showing up on time”. It could thus be deduced from the above

excerpt that in the school system, which is the focus of this paper, where both staff’s and

students’/pupils’ lateness to school pose the greatest problems to school administrators in Delta

State.

5. The Impact of Commuting Time on Youth’s School Performance.

By: Robson Tigrea, Breno Sampaiob , and Tatiane Menezesb Department of Economics,

University of Bologna Department of Economics, Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (January

2017)

Abstract

Using Brazilian data, we estimate the impact of commuting duration on students’

performance using distance to closest schools as an instrumental variable. In addition, we also

17
use identification through heteroscedasticity, which does not rely on exclusion restrictions, and

estimate bounds for the treatment effect in case there is remaining bias from unobservable. We

find strong and consistent evidence that duration of commuting has a negative causal effect on

academic achievement. More over the relatively small heterogeneity across quantiles of test

score makes us believe that public transportation policies targeted at students can promote

education not only for those less well-off.

Synthesis

Based on study, recognizing that the additional time spent traveling from home to school

could be otherwise allocated to studying or devoted to physical activities, leisure and sleeping,

activities positively related with academic achievement. Higher levels of formal education have

been consistently linked to economic development and improvement in several well-being

outcomes students tend to place more weight on expected academic gains than on travel costs

when choosing schools, since they predominantly choose where to enroll their children based on

information about academic standards instead of proximity or ease of enrolling their children

(Hastings, Kane, and Staiger, 2005). Moreover, longer commuters tended to show a lower

performance. With this information in mind, we carried out a thorough investigation on

commuting duration alone could significantly affect students.

1. Causes and Effects of Tardiness of the Senior High School Students of Southern de

Oro Philippines College.

By: Fullo, Glorylourd Joana C.Gramor, Omar M.

Abstract

Many Senior High school students come late to school and as a result; academic

subjects will be affected as well as the grades, and they will be able to miss classes as it

affects their class performance that is why every Senior High school student should

eliminate the cause regarding tardiness. A tardy student presents a lack of responsibility. Being

tardy all the time to classis a sign of carelessness and a waste of time. Being on time is not

only a duty for students, but also a part of good manners, respect and reputation. Hence,

student should know how to value their time and do their best not to be tardy at all times.

Tardiness is not much of an issue for students nowadays; to them it seems to be a normal

thing. Nonetheless, some reasons that cause the tardiness among students can tell whether it is

being committed or not or being peer pressured. When students come to class late, it can

disrupt the flow of a lecture or discussion, distract other students, impede learning, and

generally erode class morale. Moreover, if left unchecked, lateness can become chronic and

spread throughout the class because there are a number of possible reasons students arrive to

class late.

Synthesis

Students of Southern de Oro Philippines college notice that many senior high school students

come late to school. And because of that academic performance of those students also affect.

They state that being on time is not only a duty for students but also a part of good manners.

19
They state that every student should know how to value their time. Tardiness nowadays is a

normal thing and ignored for some of the students. But if tardiness ignored it can lead to some

major problem. There are number of reasons why students arrive to class late. Some reasons of

tardiness can’t tell if it is whether committed or not and when students come to class late it can

disrupt the flow of a lecture or discussion and they can also miss important lessons in class.

Tardiness getting worse if we ignored it and the number 1 who suffer from it is the students this

research is very important because it might be the answer to those students who affect their

performance in school because of tardiness.

2. IT’S ABOUT TIME TO BE ON TIME! A STUDY ON STUDENT’S TARDINESS

IN ATENEO DE DAVAO UNIVERSITY-JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL

By Jossie V. Bolaños, Alma Raymond S. Bartola, Lamuel T. Parreñ (2017)

Abstract

In terms of profile, this study found out that seventy-four percent (74%) of the

respondents belong to the catholic faith. Thirty-five percent (35%) of them were also identified

as the youngest among the siblings in the family. Seventy-eight percent (78%) of them are living

in a complete family set up (two-natural parents). Eighty percent (80%) of the respondents are

living on a family with intact married parents. Fifty-six percent (56%) of the respondents’’ home

is located more than 2 kilometers away from the AdDU-JHS. Fifty-three (53%) of them have

family vehicles as their mode of transportation. More than half (56.41%) of the total respondents

finished their elementary education from the Ateneo de Davao University-Grade School. More

than nine-tenths (91%) of the respondents have studied in the AdDU-JSH starting in Grade 7.

20
More than three-fourths (80%) of them were not on the academic probation status as well as on

disciplinary probation status (82%).

The top reasons of respondents for being tardy in coming to school were going late to bed

and waking up late (65%) and the distance to school (61%). Among the various reasons why

students go to bed late was the fact that more than one-fourth (27%) of them spent their time

when not in school hanging around with friends. Moreover, more than half (56%) of the

respondents went to bed at 10:00PM.

The top three observed effects of tardiness according to the respondents were stressed

(58%), tired (52%), and disorganized (34%). The top students’ reasons in coming to class late

were finishing their snacks/lunch (45%) and working with their other requirements (41%).

Almost half (45%) of the respondents viewed the school’s tardy policy as effective. Exactly

three-fourth (75%) of the respondents believed that they need assistance the most from their

parents/guardians to curb their tardiness concern. Almost one-eight (12%) of them said that the

class moderators can also give them the assistance they need. Two-fifths (40%) of the

respondents favored the presence of adults along the corridors will help them to get to class on

time. The top three possible solutions to habitual tardiness chosen by the respondents for

themselves: going to bed early (77%), create and follow a schedule (57%), and lessen the

number of hours in using gadgets (5) %). The top three possible solutions to habitual tardiness

from home: inform other family members to wake them up early (50%), consistent monitoring

by parents (44%), and parents to be conscious of school time (38%). The proponents of this

study created an action plan design that is holistic in its approach. All three aspects of the

development of a learner are considered. It is up to the office concerned to create the concept

paper for the activity’s implementations.

21
Synthesis

Students of Ateneo de Davao conduct a research their research aimed is to identified why

students of grade 7-10 f Ateneo de Davao are habitually late. The researchers are alarmed in the

increasing number of students come late in school and they want to find out the reason behind

why students are coming late in school. And they find out that tardiness was the top minor

infraction committed by junior high school students in their school and to find out the number of

students come late in their school they used (CPIS) or Cura Personalis Information System of the

school this is where you can find the list of the students come late in school.

Their survey used multi staged sampling technique to identify from what grade in junior

high school has the highest number of late and they identified the first students who has the

highest number if late the grade 10 students and second, they know the population and reason

behind why students are come late in school.

Their data was collected through Microsoft excel and computed through (PASW) or

Predictive Analytic Software. Their data are (74) percent of the respondents is come from

catholic faith (35) percent are the youngest among the siblings (78) of them are come from

complete family set up or both parents are together (80) percent are came from broken family

(56) percent their house are 2 kilometers away from the school (53) percent of them used their

family vehicle as mode of transportations. More than half of the respondents finished their

elementary in Ateneo de Davao junior high school. More than (91) percent of the students start

in Grade 7.

And they find out that the top reasons why students being tardy in school were going late

to bed and waking up late (65) distance to school (61) percent (27) percent of students spent their

time hanging out with their friends (56) percent of students going in bed at 10:00 pm.

22
And they also observed the effects of tardiness based on their data (58) percent are stress

(52) percent are tired and (34) percent is disorganized and also (45) percent of the students said

that school tardy policy is effective (75) percent of the students said that they need assistance

from their parents or guardian. The possible solutions to avoid tardiness according to the

respondents are going to bed early create and follow schedule lessen number of hours when

using gadgets.

3. DESCRIPTIVE RESEARCH ON TARDINESS OF STUDENTS IN GRADE X

PHOENIX SECTION.

By: Rimmon A. Paren, MBA.

ABSTRACT

Punctuality is one of the virtues beyond reproach. Much of the time and wealth will be

saved if this virtue will be carried out to the system of every responsible citizen. Punctuality will

encompass all of the positive action in all aspects. Though it was less appreciated in other

situations like productivity against punctuality, none the less, it is still very vital in situations that

needed it most.

This study will determine the factors affecting students in their daily routine during

school days. Always and often times being tardy in the flag ceremony, in attending classes after

recess time in the morning and afternoon class sessions and during the first period in the

afternoon class session. There are observed instances that during their transfer of room in their

specialization subjects and other activities that needs outdoor activities, they are behind schedule

in attending to it.

23
There was an indication that student had significantly disliked the subjects of Science and

Mathematics and might be the reason for leniency in their study. The aversion towards the matter

is merely on the subject and has nothing to do with the Subject Teacher. Moreover, there are

students who fairly rated their teacher that might affect their performance at school.

Synthesis

The study aims to determine factors affecting the students being tardy during daily

routine of school days. Students always tardy in flag ceremony attending class and after recess

time the study notice that students feeled but when it is recess transfer of room and outdoor

activities students didn’t feel any tardy and there is also a sign that students didn’t lie the subject

they observed that when the subject is science mathematics the student’s tardiness vanished. The

problem is not in subject teacher but in subjects that teach to students this study finds out that the

other factors why students experiencing tardiness and the factor is in subjects not in their subject

teacher. But also, there are students who rated their teacher that might affect their academic

performance.

4. Factors Affecting the Academic Performance of the Student Nurses of BSU.

By: Sunshine B. Alos, Lawrence C. Caranto, Juan Jose T. David (2015)

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the factors affecting the academic performance of fourth

year student nurses. The factors affecting a student’s academic performance arise from several

reasons. In line with this, this research was conducted to determine the factors that affect the

academic performance of the nursing students which may consequently help in the improvement

24
of the students and teachers alike. This study may benefit the students by allowing them to

understand better the factors that can affect their academic performance. They may be able to

improve their academic performance with the findings that are established by this study. A

quantitative-descriptive design was utilized. Self-reporting questionnaire was the main method

used for data gathering. Average weighted mean was used to determine the level of impact of the

different factors affecting the respondents’ academic performance. The first two (2) items in the

personal condition’s category are found to be of high impact. Meanwhile, the last three (3) items

in the same subset fell in the low range. On the other hand, all indicators included in the category

of study habits were considered highly impactful except for the last item which was ranked

rather lower. Student nurses have been discovered to have rated home-related factors as low in

impact. In school-related aspects, the first six (6) items are of high impact; conversely, the

7th indicator was rated low. Among the teacher-related-factors, only item 1 was established to be

of very high impact and the rest posed to be highly impactful. In the subset of personal factors,

feeling sleepy in class in class was rated to be of highest impact. The indicator ‘I study only

when there is a quiz’ was determined to have the highest impact among study habits. Meanwhile,

among the home-related aspects, ‘I live far from school’ was found to be the most impactful. The

indicator ‘the time schedule is followed’ was determined to have the greatest effect among the

school-related items. Highest of impact among the five domains were the teacher-related factors.

Based from the findings, it was concluded that several factors pose a high impact on the

academic performance of student nurses, with teacher-related factors topping the list. Among the

five (5) domains, study habits and school-related factors fall behind the teacher-related factors.

Nonetheless, both categories are still deemed to be highly impactful. Conversely, personal

conditions and home-related factors pose little effect on student nurses’ academic performance.

25
Synthesis

Based on the study, the factors affecting a student’s academic performance arise from

several reasons. Thinking skills primarily affect student’s learning faculties if they do not learn

what they need to learn. If teachers do not know how to catch the attention of a student, the more

the student cannot make himself attentive to that subject. The student gets lazy because it has a

subject that they think that it’s a subject he perceives to be not so relevant to their course;

nonetheless, they still study it. The result of this study may benefit the students by allowing them

to understand better the factors that can affect their academic performance. They may be able to

improve their academic performance with the findings that are established by this study. With

this study’s insights, the parents may be able to understand and help their children regarding their

school matters and give them support. For the teachers, this study may help them to recognize

problems encountered by the students that may pose an effect in their performance. They may

find alternative actions on how to handle their students. For the school administrators, they may

be able to promote thinking skills assessment in their school, letting their teachers understand the

influences of their student’s preferred learning styles that will promote adequate learning

opportunities and effective instructions. This research was conducted among nursing students of

Benguet State University, La Trinidad Benguet to determine the factors that affect the academic

performance of the nursing students which may consequently help in the improvement of the

students and teachers alike.

5. TARDINESS IN RELATION TO THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OS THE
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS OF LA VERDAD CHRISTIAN SCHOOL
AY 2016-2017.

By: Caroro Persida Esparangal, Antonette Fabian, Kya Punsalan and Jenny Jader Arabella

ABSTRACT

Tardiness are the most often problem now to those students being tardy means going to

school late. Tardiness might lead to more serious problem. The most serious problem if tardiness

effects the academic performance of students and their learning as well. If the students are not on

time always he/she cannot perform well in class. Passing out not on time is an example of

tardiness but students until now is not aware on the possible effects of tardiness in their study the

study aims to find out the answer to the different causes and how to avoid it.

Synthesis

Students in La Verdad Christian school in Apalit Pampanga conduct a survey about

different ways to avoid tardiness they state that tardiness is the most common problem to those

students. Students who are not passing their output on time is an example of tardiness and they

state that tardiness might lead to some serious problem and if students experiencing tardiness

he/she affects their academic performance. Because of tardiness, students till now are not aware

on the effects of tardiness in their study this study aims to find an answer to different causes and

how to avoid it.

CHAPTER 5

I. INTRODUCTION

This chapter focuses on the summary of findings, conclusions, and recommendations

based on the data in the previous chapter.

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS

This study aims to know what are the Impact of Tardiness in Academic Performance

among the Grade 11 STEM and TECHVOC students of La Consolacion College Novaliches S.

Y 2018-2019. They are 65 respondents from Senior High School Grade 11 STEM (Unity and

Honesty) and TECHVOC (Courage). It is conducted by the use of quantitative research and the

main instrument used in the study is survey questionnaire made by the researchers.

The salient findings are as follows:

1. The common causes of tardiness

The common causes why students are tardy because of the traffic jam, sleeping in late night,

doing tons of assignments and playing video games.

2. Negative effects brought by tardiness in the academic performance of Grade 11 STEM and

TECHVOC students

Based on the data gathered, students are neutral (39%) about getting low grades because of

tardiness. Somehow, students are disagreed (31%) if they missed a lot of important lesson

because of being late. Students are strongly agreed (28%) that tardiness caused to lost their

focus during discussion/s.

3. Possible solutions to lessen the tardiness of the Grade 11 STEM and TECHVOC students

45
Based on the data gathered, the possible solutions to lessen the tardiness are: students agree

that M,W,F and T,TH,S are much better (39%), students are strongly agree that the start of

flag assembly is at 7:30 am (39%), and also, students are agree that during rainy season the

time will extended 7:15-7:30 am/ 12:15-12:30 (42%).

II. CONCLUSION

The researchers, after a careful assessment of the outcomes from the conducted survey to Grade 11

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), Information and Communications

Technology (ICT) and Home Economics (HE) students at La Consolacion College Novaliches, have

cone to present the conclusions pertaining to this research. Based on the different findings in this study,

the following conclusions were drawn:

 Students are neutral about implementing morning classes, most of them want to have

MWF and TTHS schedule to prevent them from being tardy.

 That flag ceremony should start at 7:30 am so that they have much more time preparing

in the morning, understanding the consequences that going to school late in for 3

consecutive time will require them to have community service and 3 lates are equivalent

to 1 absent policy.

 They would like to suggest that during rainy seasons it would be fair if time will be

extended from 7:15-7:30am before flag ceremony will start, this will help them to

decrease the numbers of late every morning.

 Students fairly agree and disagree that tardiness gives low grades to them because most

of them disagreed that tardiness caused them to missed a lot of important lessons but

sometimes based on their answers it cause them to lost their focus resulting for them to be

greatly affected on their academic performance.

46
III. RECOMMENDATION

Based on the findings and conclusion presented. Researcher’s would like to this study to

the following:

 School Administrators- Researchers recommend that the school schedule should divided

into 2 sessions the (AM and PM) sessions so that the students could choose their time that

can fit to their schedule. Students could choose their preferred schedule during enrollment.

 Students- Researchers presented a program that would help the students to prevent tardiness

and it is called APPLY (Always Practice Productivity to Lighten Your life) this program

would help the students to learn how to value their time and how to manage it and become

motivated every day.

 Future Researcher/s- Future researchers should review the school manual in order to know

what are the existing schedule in our school. This would help the future researchers so that

they could help this to improve more.
