When the closing contact from the device is closed, the positive pole of DC power supply used for
closing arrives at the terminal n33 through the contact, and then the relays ZHJ and ZXJ will
operate. The relay ZHJ is a repeat relay of auto-reclosing, there are three couples of normally
open contacts closed after it operates and connected to the three phase-segregated closing
circuits (A, B, C) respectively to trigger the closing coil of the circuit breaker.

The relay ZXJ is a magnetic latching signal relay, which is to trigger an LED indicator that means
the reclosing circuit is initiated and to initiate a relevant signal circuit otherwise. When pressing the
reset button, the reset coil of the magnetic latching relay will be field excitation and the closing
signal will be reset.

3.2.2 Manual Closing and Remote Closing Circuit

When implementing manual closing or remote closing, KK switch or remote closing contacts is in
the closed position and the positive pole of DC power supply will arrive at the terminals n34 and
n35, and then the relays 1SHJ, 21SHJ, 22SHJ and 23SHJ will operate. Meanwhile the operating
coil of relay KKJ will be magnetized and latched. After the relay 1SHJ operates, its three couples
of normally open contacts will trigger the three phase-segregated closing circuits (A, B and C)
respectively. After the relays 21SHJ, 22SHJ and 23SHJ operate, their contacts will be sent to the
protection and reclosing for such applications as “manual closing SOTF” and “manual closing
discharge”. After the relay KKJ operates, KKJ will give a post closed contact through the
intermediate relay 1ZJ.

In Figure 3.1-1, The resistances and capacitors compose a broadening circuit of manual closing
pulse. This means the capacitors will be charged when closing manually or remotely. When the
manually closing contact of KKJ drops off, capacitors will discharge to the relays 21SHJ, 22SHJ,
23SHJ and 1ZJ to keep them operating for a while. This period of time is beyond 400ms to ensure
that the protection device can accelerate to trip when the transmission line is switched onto fault
manually or remotely.

The manual closing circuit is controlled by the pressure of circuit breaker. The low pressure will
block closing, the contacts 3YJJ and 22YJJ will open and the manual or remote closing is
forbidden at that time.

3.3 Three-Phase Trip Circuit

The three-phase trip circuit is shown in Figure 3.1-1 and its operating principle is described as
follows.

3.3.1 Three-Phase Tripping with Reclosing

The three-phase tripping with reclosing contact triggers the relays 11TJQ, 12TJQ, 13TJQ, 21TJQ,
22TJQ and 23TJQ through the terminals n36 (to trigger the first group of trip coil) and n39 (to
trigger the second group of trip coil) respectively. The relays 11TJQ, 12TJQ and 13TJQ will trigger
the first group of phase-segregated trip circuit after they operate and the relays 21TJQ, 22TJQ and
23TJQ will trigger the second group of phase-segregated trip circuit after they operate.

3.3.2 Three-Phase Tripping without Reclosing

The three-phase tripping without reclosing contact trigger the relays 11TJR, 12TJR, 13TJR, 21TJR,
22TJR and 23TJR through the terminals n38 (to trigger the first group of trip coil) and n40 (to
trigger the second group of trip coil) respectively. The relays 11TJR, 12TJR, 13TJR will trigger the
first group of phase-segregated trip circuit after they operate and the relays 21TJR, 22TJR, 23TJR
will trigger the second group of phase-segregated trip circuit after they operate. After this circuit is
triggered, the related contacts will be sent to reclosing to discharge and forbid reclosing.

3.3.3 Manual and Remote Tripping Circuit

Manual or remote tripping contacts trigger the relays 1STJ, STJA, STJB, STJC and the reset coil

16 NR ELECTRIC CO., LTD

Chapter 3 Operation Theory

of KKJ through the terminal n37, and wherein the relays STJA, STJB and STJC are to trigger two
groups of trip circuits and the relay KKJ provides post closed contact (KK) to block reclosing
through intermediate relay 2ZJ.

3.3.4 Reserved Three-phase Tripping Relay

This device is equipped with reserved three-phase tripping relay (used for the mechanical
protection of transformers). When three-phase tripping, the relays 11BJ, 12BJ, 21BJ and 22BJ will
be triggered through the terminals n48 (for the first group) and n56 (for the second group), these
relays are connected to two groups of DC power supplies respectively. The relays 11BJ, 12BJ and
the relays 21BJ, 22BJ will trigger the first and the second phase-segregated tripping circuit
respectively. These reserved relays set the operating time as a timing square-wave of 0.3s to
prevent BJ circuit from continually operating when the trip signals of mechanical protection cannot
drop off in time.

3.4 DC Power Supervision and Switchover

The structure of this circuit is shown in Figure 3.1-1 and its operating principle is described as
follows.

The two phase-segregated tripping circuits of CZX-12R2 have independent DC power supply and
equipped with DC power supply supervision circuit which can alarm through the relays 12JJ and
2JJ while any of two groups of DC power supplies is lost. The DC power supply switched via the
relay 11JJ is for pressure supervision and backup relay circuits.

3.5 Phase-segregated Closing Circuit

The phase-segregated closing circuit is shown in Figure 3.1-2, and its operating principle is
described as follows.

3.5.1 Open State Supervision

When the circuit breaker is in open position, its normally closed auxiliary contacts are closed. The
relays 1TWJ~3TWJ will operate and relevant contacts will be connected to protection and signal
circuits.

3.5.2 Closing Circuit

When the circuit breaker is in open position, when manually closing or auto-reclosing, the relays
SHJa, SHJb and SHJc will operate and latched through their own contacts until the circuit breaker
is closed and its auxiliary contacts open.

3.5.3 Anti-pump Circuit

When the circuit breaker is manually closed or automatically reclosed to the failed circuit and the
closing pulse is comparatively long, in order to prevent the circuit breaker from frequently closing
after tripping, the anti-pump circuit is thus provided. When manual closing or reclosing happens to
the failed circuit and the circuit breaker is tripped, the contacts of the tripping seal-in relay TBIJ in

NR ELECTRIC CO., LTD 17

Chapter 3 Operation Theory

the tripping circuit will be closed to trigger the relay 1TBUJ, the relay 1TBUJ will trigger the relay
2TBUJ after it operate, the relay 2TBUJ will be latched through its own contact if the closing pulse
exists, and then the normally closed contacts of the two relays connected to the closing circuit in
series will open to avoid frequently tripping & closing the circuit breaker. In order to prevent the
anti-pump circuit from failure due to the chatter of the pressure contacts of the circuit breaker
under extreme conditions, one couple of contacts of the relay 2TBUJ will be paralleled with the
relay 11YJJ to ensure not frequently closing the circuit breaker under such conditions.

If the anti-pump circuit of this device is not adopted, it is only necessary to short the terminals
n181~n6, n182~n8 and n183~n10 respectively to disable this function.

3.6 Phase-segregated Tripping Circuit

The phase-segregated tripping circuit is shown in Figure 3.1-3 and Figure 3.1-4, and its operating
principle is described as follows.

3.6.1 Closing State Supervision

When the circuit breaker is in closed position, its normally open auxiliary contacts are closed. The
relays 1HWJ~3HWJ will operate and connect contacts to protection and relevant signal circuits.

3.6.2 Tripping Circuit

When the circuit breaker is in closed position, its normally open auxiliary contacts are closed. If the
phase-segregated tripping contacts of the protection device operate, the trip circuit will be
switched on, the trip seal-in relays 1TBIJ and 2BTIJ will operate and be latched through their own
contacts until the circuit breaker is tripped and its auxiliary contact is open.

This device has two trip circuits with identical principles using two groups of DC operating power
supply respectively to trigger the two trip coils of the circuit breaker. The first group of tripping
circuit is shown in Figure 3.1-3 and the second group of tripping circuit is shown in Figure 3.1-4.

3.7 Trip & Closing Signal Circuit

This circuit is shown in Figure 3.1-5 and its operating principle is described as follows.

3.7.1 Reclosing Signal

When reclosing automatically, the operating coils of the magnetic latching relay ZXJ is magnetized,
the relay will operate and be latched, and its one couple of normally open contact will be closed to
trigger the LED indicator of reclosing signal. When the reset button (FA) is pressed, the reset coils
of the magnetic latching relay will be field excitation and the reclosing signal will be reset.

3.7.2 Tripping Signal

When a protection device operates to trip, the relay TBIJ connected in the tripping circuit in series
will operate and its contacts will trigger the operating coil of the magnetic latching relay TXJ.

This relay TXJ operates and is latched. It is to trigger the signal light circuit and to send the tripping
signal otherwise. When the reset button (FA) is pressed, the reset coils of the magnetic latching

18 NR ELECTRIC CO., LTD

Chapter 3 Operation Theory

relay TXJ will be field excitation and the reclosing signal will be reset.

When manual tripping happens, the normally closed contacts STJ connected to the relay TXJ
circuit in series will open and the trip signal will not be sent during manual tripping.

3.8 Pressure Blocking Circuit

This circuit is shown in Figure 3.1-6. Its operating principle is described as follows.

3.8.1 Low Pressure to Block Operating

When the pressure of the circuit breaker is low to block tripping and closing, the relevant contacts
will be closed to switch positive pole of power supply into the circuit through the terminals n3 and
n44 to trigger the relay 4YJJ, whose output contacts will block relevant tripping & closing circuits
and issue a signal that the pressure is low to block tripping & closing.

3.8.2 Low Pressure to Block Reclosing

When the pressure of the circuit breaker is low to block reclosing, the relevant contacts will close
to short the terminals n50 and n32, and then the relays 21YJJ and 22YJJ will be de-excitation and
reset, and the relevant contacts will block reclosing and give a signal that the pressure is low to
block reclosing. If the pressure decreases during closing, reliable closing can be still ensured due
to drop off with a time delay of 0.3s.

3.8.3 Low Pressure to Block Manual Closing

When the pressure of the circuit breaker is low to block closing, the relevant contacts will close to
short the terminals n52 and n32, and then the relay 3YJJ will be de-excitation and reset, and the
relevant contacts will block corresponding closing circuits and give a signal that the pressure is low
to block closing. Likewise, if the pressure decreases during closing, reliable closing can be still
ensured due to drop off with a time delay of 0.3.

3.8.4 Low Pressure to Block Tripping & Closing

When the pressure of the circuit breaker is low to block tripping, the relevant contacts will close to
short the terminals n49 and n32, and then the relays 11YJJ and 12YJJ will be de-excitation and
reset, and the relevant contacts will disconnect the positive pole of DC power supply of the tripping
& closing circuits and give a signal that the pressure is low to block tripping and closing.

3.9 AC Voltage Switchover Circuit

This circuit is shown in Figure 3.1-7. Its operating principle is described as follows.

The isolator switch provides two couples of auxiliary contacts: one normally open contact and the
other normally closed contact

When the line is connected to BB1 (busbar No.1), the normally open auxiliary contacts of the
isolator switch for BB1 will close, the relays 1YQJ1, 1YQY2 and 1YQJ3 will operate, and also the
magnetic latching relays 1YQJ4, 1YQJ5, 1YQJ6 and 1YQJ7 will operate and be latched.

The normally closed contacts of the isolator switch for BB2 will make the relays 2YQJ4, 2YQJ5,
2YQJ6 and 2YQJ7 reset. Then, the indicator LED 1XD will light up, which indicates that the AC

NR ELECTRIC CO., LTD 19

Chapter 3 Operation Theory

voltage of the protection device is from VT of BB1.

When the line is connected to BB2 (busbar No.2), the normally open auxiliary contacts of the
isolator switch for BB2 will close, the relays 2YQJ1, 2YQY2 and 2YQJ3 will operate, and also the
magnetic latching relays 2YQJ4, 2YQJ5, 2YQJ6, 2YQJ7 will operate and be latched.

The normally closed contacts of the isolator switch of BB2 will make the relays 2YQJ4, 2YQJ5,
2YQJ6 and 2YQJ7 reset. Then, the indicator LED 2XD will light up, which indicates that the AC
voltage of the protection device is from VT of BB2.

When the two isolator switches are both closed, the indicator LEDs 1XD and 2XD will both light up,
which indicates that the AC voltage of the protection device is provided by VT of BB1 and BB2.

If DC power supply of the interposing relay set is lost, the state of the contacts of the magnetic
latching relays will keep unchanged and the protection device will not lose AC voltage

If the isolator switch only provides a couple of normally open auxiliary contact, it is only necessary
to connect the terminals n208 and n209 with the terminals n210 and n190 respectively.

The part of the relay contacts in the voltage switchover circuit will be connected to breaker failure
protection, busbar differential protection and relevant signal circuits.

3.10 Reserved Intermediate Relay

The CZX-12R2 also provides many intermediate relays so that the flexibility for device utilization
can be improved.

4.4 Adjustment Method for Latching Current of Tripping & Closing

In order to facilitate production and operation, the jumper mode is adopted to adjust the latching
current of tripping & closing of this device and its principle is shown below:

Setting formula for the latching current of tripping & closing circuit

I 0.5A ∑I

I is the setting value of the latching current

I is the current value flowing through shunt resistance

Jumper 0.5A Jumper 1A Jumper 2A Target latching current

OFF OFF OFF 0.5A
ON OFF OFF 1.0A
OFF ON OFF 1.5A
ON ON OFF 2.0A
OFF OFF ON 2.5A
ON OFF ON 3.0A
OFF ON ON 3.5A
ON ON ON 4.0A

When no jumper is connected, the latching current is 0.5A. When one jumper is connected, the
corresponding current value is added (refer to the above table). When all jumpers are connected,
the fixed value of the latching current is 4A. This can easily realize the adjustment of the latching
current within the range of 0.5A~4A (0.5A as a stage head). It is necessary to notify that two times
of operating margin has been considered when selecting shunt resistance. When setting current
value, just set the value according to the actual tripping & closing current of the circuit breaker
without consideration of the margin.

NR ELECTRIC CO., LTD 31

Chapter 4 Hardware Description

Caution!

The latching current of tripping circuit can be adjusted in the plug-in modules of #4, #5, #6,
#11, #12 and #13. The latching current of closing circuit can be adjusted in the plug-in
modules of #8, #9 and #10.

The latching currents for tripping circuit and closing circuit are different, and they shall be
set respectively according to the specific parameters of the tripping & closing circuit.

The device can be delivered from factory only if all jumpers have been properly set
according to the order information. In case of particular conditions, it is necessary to re-set
the jumpers, shut down DC power supply of the device, wait 5s for capacitors to discharge,
open the front panel, unplug the plug-in modules and then set the latching current of
tripping & closing circuit.

5.5 Device Location and Ambient Conditions

The place of installation should permit easy access especially to front of the device, i.e. to the
human-machine interface of the equipment.

There should also be free access at the rear of the equipment for additions and replacement of
electronic boards.

Since every piece of technical equipment can be damaged or destroyed by inadmissible ambient
conditions, such as:

1. The location should not be exposed to excessive air pollution (dust, aggressive substances).

2. Severe vibration, extreme changes of temperature, high levels of humidity, surge voltages of
high amplitude and short rise time and strong induced magnetic fields should be avoided as
far as possible.

3. Air must not be allowed to circulate freely around the equipment.

The equipment can in principle be mounted in any attitude, but it is normally mounted vertically
(visibility of markings).

Figure 5.6-1 Dimensions

Figure 5.6-2 Panel cut-out

Note!

It is necessary to leave enough space top and bottom of the cut-out in the cubicle for heat
emission of the CZX-12R2.

5.7 Electrical Installation

5.7.1 Grounding Guidelines

Switching operations in HV installations generate transient over voltages on control signal cables.
There is also a background of electromagnetic RF fields in electrical installations that can induce
spurious currents in the devices themselves or the leads connected to them.

All these influences can influence the operation of electronic apparatus.

36 NR ELECTRIC CO., LTD

Chapter 5 Installation

On the other hand, electronic apparatus can transmit interference that can disrupt the operation of
other apparatus.

In order to minimize these influences as far as possible, certain standards have to be observed
with respect to grounding, wiring and screening.

Note!

All these precautions can only be effective if the station ground is of good quality.

5.7.2 Cubicle Grounding

The cubicle must be designed and fitted out such that the impedance for RF interference of the
ground path from the electronic device to the cubicle ground terminal is as low as possible.

Metal accessories such as side plates, blanking plates etc., must be effectively connected
surface-to-surface to the grounded frame to ensure a low-impedance path to ground for RF
interference. The contact surfaces must not only conduct well, they must also be non-corroding.

Note!

If the above conditions are not fulfilled, there is a possibility of the cubicle or parts of it
forming a resonant circuit at certain frequencies that would amplify the transmission of
interference by the devices installed and also reduce their immunity to induced
interference.

Movable parts of the cubicle such as doors (front and back) or hinged equipment frames must be
effectively grounded to the frame by three braided copper strips (see Figure 5.7-1).

The metal parts of the cubicle housing and the ground rail are interconnected electrically
conducting and corrosion proof. The contact surfaces shall be as large as possible.

Note!

For metallic connections please observe the voltage difference of both materials according
to the electrochemical code.

The cubicle ground rail must be effectively connected to the station ground rail by a grounding strip
(braided copper).

NR ELECTRIC CO., LTD 37

Chapter 5 Installation

5.7.3 Making Electrical Connections

Always make sure established guidelines for this type of terminal is followed during installation.
When necessary use screened twisted-pair cables to minimize susceptibility. Otherwise, use any
kind of regular nonscreened tinned RK cable or equivalent.

When using screened cabling always use 360° full screen cable bushing to ensure screen
coupling. Ensure that all signals of the single circuit are in the same single cable. Avoid mixing
current and voltage measuring signals in the same cable. Also use separate cables for control and
measuring circuits.

1. Connecting the auxiliary power:

All plug-in modules of the device demand to introduce DC power supply. The DC power supply will
be connected to the input terminals of various plug-in modules after running in idle for some time.

2. Input/output signal connectors:

The input and output circuits will be connected with the terminal board generally, external circuit
will connect the relevant terminal board through dedicated cable.

Chapter 7 Maintenance

Chapter 7 Maintenance
NR numerical relay is designed to require no special maintenance. All measurement and signal
processing circuit are fully solid state. All input modules are also fully solid state. The output relays
are hermetically sealed.

Since the device is almost completely self-monitored, from the measuring inputs to the output
relays, hardware and software defects are automatically detected and reported. The
self-monitoring ensures the high availability of the device and generally allows for a corrective
rather than preventive maintenance strategy. Therefore, maintenance checks in short intervals are
not required.

Operation of the device is automatically blocked when a hardware failure is detected. If a problem
is detected in the external measuring circuits, the device normally only provides alarm messages.

7.1 Routine Check

The device realizes complete self-check, so routine check can only involve some typical items
recommended by our company, otherwise, users can run their own check regulations.

When failures are found during routine check, please confirm them by the following contents:

„ Check or test whether the circuit is properly connected

„ Whether the module is in correct position and located accurately

„ Whether the voltage of DC power supply is correct

„ Test flow strictly conforms to the requirements of debugging outline or related general rules

7.2 Replace Failed Modules

If the failure is identified to be in the relay module and the user has spare modules, the user can
recover the protection by replacing the failed modules.

Repair at the site should be limited to module replacement. Maintenance at the component level is
not recommended.

Check that the replacement module has an identical module name and hardware type-form as the
removed module.

The module name is indicated on the top front of the module.

Caution!

When handling a module, take anti-static measures such as wearing an earthed wrist band
and placing modules on an earthed conductive mat. Otherwise, many of the electronic
components could suffer damage.
